Did not look at the price until it was going in the fridge.
Boars Head roast beef.
16.99 lb for lunchmeat. I should have bought ham.

I am thinking it is time for homemade rye bread.

I generally don't pay much attention to grocery prices, but I just went back to compare some of
my 2019 Amazon Fresh Delivery vittles prices to now - w0w...!!!

Did the same with Squallmart, again substantial price rises from pre - pandemic...

Anyways, relish every bit of yer sammich, "it's worth it", as the old saying goes...

You didn't notice the price when you paid for your lunchmeat or did
you just walk out of the store without paying?

Ham is the bottom of the barrel. I'm the only one in
my family who will even eat it. My wife buys that
expensive lunch meat. One thing that I do to save
money is buy the rotisserie chicken at Costco, then
slice it up for her sandwiches. Here's what I paid
for TWO T-bone steaks a few days ago.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/36178182@N08/52857295575/in/dateposted-public/
A WHOLE T-bone steak for about the same price as
1/4# of that lunchmeat.

I hate people that don't consider prices when they buy stuff.
"Much much does it cost?" is the second diamond on my "Grocery
Buying Decision" flowchart - right after "What is it?" and before
"Do I need it?" and "Do I want it?".

One thing I like about our Walmart is that when and if the deli
staffer arrives to work they cut various lunchmeats and
immediately mark it down 10-60%. This is an incentive to keep
customers from harassing them for cut-to-order lunch meat when
they're trying very hard to avoid working at all.

For example: .83 lbs of solid muscle roast beef for $5.61 (37%
off). 1/3rd the price of that Boars Head.

https://i.postimg.cc/q7dNtwPs/Walmart-Roast-beef.jpg

Yes, thank you.

The discounts seem dynamically random, so it keeps me checking out
that little space. While the Mickleberry's ham is only 14% off
this day, I would have taken 0% off since they're the only store
that sells Mickleberry's anymore.

https://i.postimg.cc/K8TKvwHc/Walmart-Mickleberrys.jpg

Two weeks ago it was pastrami for 60% off. Got 3 packages of
2lbs.

And then if these don't sell by the next day, they mark them down
with another yellow sticker 50%.

Looks like Thomas has decided my 3:AM snack for me. I mean, since
it's already out of the package...

Viva la Wally World! Down with Boars Head!

You going to church today, Thomas? I sure am! I'm going to pray
for serenity and people who don't look at prices. Anybody else?

You could make your own roast beef by processing a cross rib roast sous vide at 128°F for 12 or more hours. I cook the beef in dark soy sauce so there's no browning necessary. When you take it out of the water bath, just stick it in the refrigerator overnight. Slice thinly.

IMO, Boar's Head is worth the money. Most other brands are garbage.

For roast beef, though, I like Whole Paycheck's deli. It's an actual
cut of beef that they've roasted in-house.

Funny you should mention that. Last Saturday, I bought dirt cheap lunch
meat. I just wanted some meat for sandwiches and I went back 100 years
ago and bought a 12oz pack of Gwaltney bologna.

I liked it after so long! Fresh white bread, mayo, bologna and cheese
sandwiches. Add salty chips.

Childhood lunch memories revisited. I might buy another next grocery
store trip. :)

"Lunch meat" doesn't have to be served cold. I made a hot roast beef
sandwich the other day. I toasted a buttered splt French roll under the
oven broiler. Added thinly sliced roast beef and topped with provalone
cheese. Back into the oven on low until heated through and the cheese
melted. Quite tasty! And yes, it was Land O'Frost lunch meat.

much you're paying for something before you walk out of the store.

That irritates me for some reason.
If I looked and saw it was 17.23 would I put it back?
Do you do that when filling up your gas tank when it stops at 57.89? Sure, you knew it was 3.89 point 9
while I did not know the price of lunchmeat.
With your next full cart of groceries think about that when you had no idea exactly how much that cart was going to cost. You should know how much you are going to pay for that.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Xcarol's Fav Rye bread
Categories: Breadmaker, Xxcarol
Yield: 12 Servings

1 1/3 c Water
3 tb Butter
2 2/3 c Flour, white or wheat
1 1/3 c Rye flour
3 tb Brown sugar
2 ts Caraway seeds
1 ts Salt
3 tb Gluten powder
2 ts Bread machine yeast

of the bread flour. Increase gluten by 1 TB if all whole wheat. You
cvan also use regular white sugar in place of the brown.

This is for a 2 LB loaf, select whole grain is you have it, if not
basic white bread cycle will work.

Made even with all white flour, this will be a darker blend of bread.
It's effect when made with whole wheat flour is a dark and rustic

It sure sounds like David is saying the toilets in Chinese restaurants
tend to be disgusting. Why else would he avoid them? Why the heck
anyone would buy food from a restaurant that doesn't have clean toilets?

Slight thread drift. Many years ago I went to a Mexican Restaurant with
some friends and co-workers. We had been there a few times before and
the food was always excellent. This time, we had just been seated when
I went to the "bathroom". I found feces smeared all over the place, on
the walls of the stalls and even around the sink. Clogged toilets. I
turned around, walked right back to the table and said "NOPE. I'm
LEAVING. The bathroom is digusting." The health department shut it down
about a week later.

It wasn't like that the times we had been there before. Change of
ownership and it was horrific. I'm glad I didn't order any food from
that kitchen.

It's a curious thing about restaurants and health inspections. Around
here you can easily check out restaurant public health inspection
results. Traditionally, the Chinese and other Asian restaurants seemed
to be appear disproportionately for infractions and subjected to
closures. I just checked the most recent inspection results and it
seems to be pizzerias that are facing the wrath of the inspects. Yet,
over the years it has been Middle Eastern restaurants that have been
named as the source of incidents of food poisoning.

Since kitchen and wait staff are usually using the same washrooms as the
clientele, there is not much hope of their hands being clean enough to
handle my food if the washrooms are that filthy. I also would not
expect the kitchen to be cleaned if they don't care enough to keep the
bathroom clean.

I went to visit my son at his newly opened micro brewery restaurant. It
was in the morning, about an hour before opening. I went in to use the
washroom and noted that they was crud on top of some of the urinals. I
thought I was doing my son a favour by pointing it out. It was obvious
that the cleaning staff was doing a half assed job. Later in the day
there may have been an excuse for it, but not before the staff and
customers had been in to use it.

I didn't know that show was still on.
It was not needed in this case. My son had been working as an assistant
manager with the franchise in Montreal. They moved him to Toronto as
manager to oversee the construction of the new one. It did so well that
they were making a profit within two years. His reward for that was to
be laid off. That was not a problem. It was not what he wanted to be
doing and he ended up getting a good job with the government and his
starting pay was a huge increase over restaurant management job and

i normally make sure my toilet needs are done before

after being on the road for several years i decided

LOL Ed. That sign is pretty common in the US. I don't think I have ever
seen one here. It is not required by law. It's pretty sad to think that
restaurant employees would need to be told. Of course we all know that
someone who needs to be told to wash their hands will do it because
there is a sign.

Ed, I'm starting to think you really don't care about Jill's

Bologna is basically the same stuff as in hot dogs. I'd generally
rather have mortadella.

Apart from salami and mortadalla, I prefer cold cuts where I can tell
they came from some particular muscle group. Today's purchase:
roast beef.

https://boarshead.com/products/detail/235-deluxe-low-sodium-cap-off-choice-top-round-half

I didn't realize when I bought it that it was low sodium. The sign at
Kroger didn't specify.

Ah, well. I can add salt myself. I only bought half a pound, so it
should last for four servings.

Tonight's dinner: a nice-sized salad with roast beef on it, dressed
with balsamic vinegar, soy sauce (Kikkoman), and extra-virgin olive oil.

Let's call it a virtue signal.

It is just a regulation. Not enforceable unless the boss is in the
restroom with you.

Our local paper prints the inspection reports. Very few get perfect
score but many of the dings are small stuff corrected on the spot.

Common errors are meat in the fridge stored over veggies, mis-use of
gloves, produce stored on the floor in the cooler.

I am looking forward to the day that people realize that virtue
signalling is not virtue. Lets all give a shout out to the woke former
marketing executive who provided such a great example of customer
backlash. The funny thing is that in this case it woke a lot of people
up to the fact that they were drinking pansy ass beer.

I am looking forward to the day that Dave Smith realizes that being a
narrow minded bigot is not virtue either.

If one's mind is open to all thought, they will learn nothing and live in
a state of confusion, groping for acceptance from a large group of
fellow travelers.

The fact that you snip too much, is that a limitation of your Mac
software or is it user error?

When you type two words, people get bored. I'm helping them out.

That's not how you do a sous vide chuck roast properly. Time,
temp, and CERTAINLY the seasoning is all way off. "Dark Soy so you
don't have to sear" is some pretty stupid fucking thinking there.
It was undercooked, salty as seawater, and tough as nails. No
doubt about it. And you know I nailed it.
