$349.00 for crab legs at Costco

I was at Costco yesterday and they had a 20 pound box of black King
Crab Legs for $349. I've never heard of black king. Has anyone else?
And who can afford 349 bux for a box of food? YIKES!!!

too bad especially if you like crab.

And those are KING crab, not the spindly little snow crabs you get at
buffets. King crab are the good ones! Snow crab are the McCraps of
crab.

I've certainly seen king crab legs at around $17/lb before, just not in 20
lb boxes.

We got some nice packaged king crab legs at Safeway about a month or
so ago for $9.99/lb. Not the largest I've ever had but pretty big
nonetheless and they were excellent. We bought 4 pounds and still have
one pound in the freezer.

Wow, that's high. I can get frozen lobster tails between $17-18 lb in 5 lb
cases, choice of 4, 6, or 8 oz tails.

20 lbs king crab only makes sense if cooking for a large group. Frozen
crablegs are not vac packed so their "shelf" live is not that great in the
freezer. Crab legs which have overstayed their welcome in the freezer can be
pretty awful. Home vac pack units won't work on something with so many
pointy sharp edges.

This is troubling, because numerous types of king crab are on
Seafooad Watch's "avoid" list, while a few are rated "good alternative".
But "black king crab" is not listed.

Dungeness is rated "best choice". Does Costco not have
Dungeness crab?

Anyway it sounds fishy. I always go by Seafood Watch, it simplifies
things.

Either that or some king crab legs that had been hanging around in the
freezer for too long. But most likely you are correct, at least going by
market prices around here.

According to this http://www.alaskankingcrab.com/pages/king-crab there is no
variety called Black King Crab. There are Red, Blue, Golden, and Scarlet
Alaskan King Crab. Unless the origin is somewhere other than Alaska, it
makes me wonder if "black" is a trade name.

AFAICT "Black King Crab" is not an actual species of king crab. Googled
"black king crab", and "black king crab -alaska" to find out if it comes
from somewhere other than Alaska. Nothing.

However, searching without the word "king" I found there is a species of
black crab overseas, aka mud crab or mangrove crab.

I've never heard of Black either. Red King Crab is the prime catch and can
run you $25-$30 per pound if ordered direct from Alaska. A friend of mine
was in Alaska a few years ago and he had them send me 3 pounds or so for my
birthday. It came in a long insulated box with a bit of dry ice inside to
keep it frozen. Send overnight express and it was still frozen when I got
it the next day. It was the best crab I've ever eaten but pricey.

I wouldn't spring for that much money for an unknown crab and quality.
Would be nice if they would thaw a box, put on ice, and let you buy a pound
or so just to try first.

I know what snow crab is. On the package it says Alaskan King Crab.
The smallest leg was about 15" long and really meaty. My ex father in
law was the director of the Tongass forest in SE Alaska and we've
eaten plenty of king crab.

I'm going to try King crab someday. I tried Snow crab once. Awful
stuff. I saw an advertisement for some chain last week that talked
about "Queen" crab. Huh? That was a first. Made me wonder what they
were trying to slip over on the general public. When I googled for
Queen crab, it was a non-specific term that referred to different
types of crab depending on who was using it... so I'm still wondering
what kind of shenanigans they're trying to pull.

I bought frozen one time and never again. No matter how I tried to thaw
and warm it was horrible. I even thawed and just used warm butter for
dipping to warm the meat and it was still soggy. If I'm buying from the
store I'll only have them steamed in the seafood dept and bring them
home and eat right away. But I have to share with one of my cats. He
LOVES seafood and crab meat ranks right up there with shrimp to him.

Most of the crab you get has been frozen along the line, usually before it
is initially shipped, unless you're fortunate to live in a location where it
is plentiful and fresh. When being handled in the stores I get the
impression that it can go back and forth from frozen to thawed a couple
times. King Crab is virtually always cooked and frozen before shipping. I
think this is often true of snow crab as well. So it is easy for mishandling
to adversely affect the texture.

It should only be cooked just to hot, no more. The best method is steaming.
Since they have already been cooked it is easy to overcook them.

What is your favorite crab? Dungeness is my favorite, but of course
they're the only local crab (other than red crab, which I think no
longer have a commercial harvest).

Where do you get the jumbo legs like he is holding? For $20+/lb I
get what I thought were large legs--- but they are that crab's baby
brothers. I've looked at the $25/lb legs at the same market & they
didn't look much bigger. I should ask if they have $50 legs.

You can order giant and collosal crab legs on the same site. Giants are 3 lb
$139.80 which includes FedEx overnight shipping from Alaska. You can order
larger quantities as well. 10 lb $369.50. Much better per lb. since the high
dollar shipping is amortized across a larger quantity.

My choice is snow crab clusters. I think they are the sweetest of the
crab legs. And I'm in the Chesapeake Bay area with blue crabs, which I
can't stand.

I like dungeness crab and snow crab. I tried king crab once, and it
was okay, but didn't seem good enough to justify the price. I realize
it was only one try, so, it may not have been the best sample.

Don't you live somewhere near Seattle? I bought Bering Strait king crab legs
from the Pike Place Market once; they were wonderful. The trick is to
realize they're already cooked, so whatever you're doing to them should not
involve more cooking, just careful warming at most.

What's the point of warming already cooked crab if it's not going into
the oven as part of some recipe? I can see letting it warm to room
temperature while you do something else... but physically warming it
up??? Not in my world.

Yer right--- As a former fisherman and photographer I should have
spotted that.

Thanks- I feel a lot more 'adequate' about my crabs now. I was
getting a touch of the 'king crab envy'.

So the butter doesn't congeal on it? That's about the temp I like--
[for king crab or lobster] whatever butter melts at +1degree.

Hi there, neighbor! You don't like blue crabs? BLASPHEMY! hehheh

I've always like them (as the best) until I tried Alaskan King Crab. King
Crab is just as good and much easier to eat. The blue crabs are good but
such a pain in the ass to pick for eating. With the King crab, I just
microwave a leg section, break the shell and eat a good amount right away.

I've never tried the Dungeness crabs but I've been waiting for them to go on
sale here for a good while now.

It's about the same here, $4 to $7 per pound, and a crab is usually
30 to 32 ounces.

I have had bad Dungeness crab, but only because it was not perfectly
fresh. If the crab is steamed and then refrigerated for more than
a day or two, a sort of yellow component can migrate out of the gut
into the flesh. All of the body meat of a cooked Dungeness should be pure
white. And, the body meat should be as good as the leg/claw meat.
Nothing is worse than off-white crab meat.

You didn't go look at the collossal king crab legs for sale at the site I
posted, didya.

From the website:
"Alaskan king crabs grow into the largest species of crab on the eastern
hemisphere. It's not unusual to see an Alaskan king crab have a 5 to 6 feet
span from the middle leg to the other middle leg. Due to their enormous leg
size, Alaskan king crab yields some very large pieces of meat. And, because
the leg meat of Alaskan king crab is the most sought after, you can't find a
species of crab which can compare."

Also, a Deadliest Catch star, Sig Hansen sold the image of his boat for sale
on inferior and often illegally caught Russian Crab:

I have always loved king crab legs, but they have always been really
expensive here. The last time I had them was for a New Years Eve dinner
about 20 years ago when we decided to stay home and spend the money on a
good feed of crab legs. IIRC, it was about $35 at the time, and I could
have eaten more if I could have afforded it. I saw king crab legs in
the grocery store today. They were in bags of what might pass as a
portion for one person and priced form $45-50 per bag.

My cousin has a cousin out in BC who keeps promising us the next time we
are out we will go out and catch some Dungeness crabs. I don't know if
that is ever going to happen. It is impossible to get fresh crab meat
here. Well, maybe no impossible, but I check out fish departments and
fish stores and I have never seen it.

During the mid '70s Red Lobster very often ran a special; all the king
crab legs one could eat at $5.99. Folks would eat so many there
wasn't room on the tables for all the shells, they'd be falling on the
floor. The trick to doing justice was in going easy on dipping into
the endless drawn buddah and not eating the accompanying hush puppies.
Back then I loved Red Lobster, but they've deteriorated immensely.

The price is going up here too -- Hudson Fish raised their price from
$6.99 to $7.50. It is getting late in the season.

Another thing about Dungeness is it seems to be at its best in
the very beginning of the season, which in most years is around
the last week of December.

In the PNW the season is longer and it may not make as much difference.

They had one little package in another cooler. It was about a pound.

I googled for awhile and can't find anything on them so I don't know
WFT is up.
