I know you like bird pictures, thought you might like this. Approx.
60,000 snow geese migrate through here toward the end of March, some
going as far as Siberia. But, really? Move over, buddy!

That's a lot of Christmas dinners ! I wonder how many of this birds
also made a stopover at the Bear River Migratory Bird refuge . We used
to love to drive around out there looking at all the different birds
that pass thru - and it changes from week to week as different ones roll
thru in spring and fall .

Here's what they look like on the ground. The photo is a bit dated
circa 1970. I'm on the left. If hunting repulses you, don't click on
the link. You've been warned. The limit was six apiece.

Thanks for the heads up, Leo. I'd rather not see them just killed, so I
didn't click the link. I'd much rather see them flying overhead. Or
splashing in a pond. I've never roasted a goose, not much interested.

I've never seen flocks of geese here in SC. We have other kinds of
water birds but they don't tend to travel in flocks.

We see lots of flocks of geese here. They seem to arrive quietly in the
spring, coming in ones and twos. The local geese start practicing their
formation flying in the early fall. Some of the locals head south, but
then some of their northern cousins head to the relative warmth of this
area and winter here, mostly along the Niagara River, which does not
freeze over. It is interesting to drive along the Niagara Parkway in
mid winter and see the thousands and thousands of water birds who winter
here.

Wild geese taste like wild ducks the way I cook them. I don't think
that I've ever eaten a tame goose. Tame ducks taste way different than
wild ducks, so...?
By the way, Joan, my granddaughter sang at the Grand Ole Opry today in
a high school choir. I "think" you're from Nashville. Otherwise, never
mind.

Yes, Nashville is where I am and just tonight I was at a restaurant about a
block from the Opry. We're talking about the new Opry house and not the
original one that is downtown, correct? The original building downtown is
still known as the Ryman Auditorium to distinguish it from the new building.

Dunno. There appears to be two big guitars sticking up out of the
cement just in back of her (one acoustic and one electric) and a bunch
of quaint light posts (that look fairly new). There appears to be quite
a bit of concrete paving in front of her. I suspect that she is in
front of the new one.
Damn! I wanted her to tread where Doc Watson, Johnny Cash, Merle
Haggard and Roy Clark once performed. I just won't tell her that she's
living a lie.

Shot while flying overhead, they make a great splash in a pond
just moments later. ;)

Plenty here in the winter. They migrate to Chesapeake Bay and
Back Bay, VA and maybe parts of coastal northern NC. Each spring
they head back north to mate.

This is true here in the spring. Geese that have spent the winter
here start practicing. I've seen them each morning here in the
pre-dawn hours the last few weeks...noisy as hell, probably
bitching about how tired they are. heheh
Anyway, not actually practicing but building up their wing
muscles for the long migration back to the arctic each spring.

Did you know that geese mate for life? Shoot one and you have one
very sad mate left.

They can be a real pain in the butt. We get them stopping by in the
hundreds in the fields behind our house. The hang out in the neighbours
ponds on both sides of us. They are noisy and they shit everywhere.
When we go kayaking we sometimes stop for a rest at the rowing club
docks, but it is hard to find a place why you can get up onto the dock
without sitting in goose shit. The hang out near beaches and there is
concern about the cooties in all that feces getting into the swimming
areas.

There are lots of lonely geese around here. A lot of my neighbours have
ponds and they are a major attraction for geese. The geese keep the
lawns well fertilized. They start getting ballsy and walking out on the
road to claim ownership. Most people slow down and stop for them, but I
have seen at least three dead ones on the road in the last week.

I think you know I don't have a problem with hunting. I just don't like
hunting purely for sport. If we kill it (unless they are vermin) we eat it.

Maybe they should put up signs too?
I don't know your geese, but ours can fly. In one waterfront part of a
nearby city they went in and trapped a couple hundred of them and
relocated them about 100 miles away. At least that was the story. I
never heard a follow up about the upset residents of the town where they
were supposed to have been released.

Not worth it. They can damage the car and wild goose is not worth eating.

That sounds like the 'new' Opry House. But when they built this building 30+
years ago they did cut out a large circle out of the original Opry House stage
and installed in the middle of the new stage. So, all those old, original
performers have tread the new stage. And all those stars you mentioned did
perform at the new venue.

That's good news. I didn't realize that the new venue was over thirty
years old :) Putting part of the old stage in the new stage also
preserves the mystique. Patsy Cline, Maybelle Carter, Hank Williams and
Lester Flatt would be proud.
