Peppermint oil vs. extract - or spirits?

From what little I've found online, the oil is MUCH stronger than the extract, though it's not clear just how much less oil should be used in recipes.

As it happens, though, I don't have extract, but I have the oil plus a tiny bottle of peppermint spirits, and I don't know how that compares to either of the other two.

Does anyone know? Thanks.

Lenona.

What are you making? In some recipes like certain candies, you need the oil
because the extract has a different, more watery consistency to it. With
the oil, best to use whatever amount you can pick up on a toothpick at one
time. Stir it in, taste if you can. Add more if needed.

How odd that you asked this since I was looking at a recipe today that said
if it calls for 1-2 tsps of extract, you should use 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of the
oil, since it is so much stronger. I did use 1/8 tsp of orange oil where it
called for 1 tsp of orange extract and it was just right.

A fun thing to do with peppermint oil is to Annoy Spiders. They were quite
determined to build a spider condo at my kitchen window. A drop of
peppermint oil and they packed up and left. Polly

I see a couple gallons of peppermint oil in my future.

That peppermint oil can certainly take your breath away if you're not
careful. I put too many drops in my tea not long ago and it flat watered my
eyes, so I imagine a spider wouldn't stick around.

It seems to settle a tummy really well.

Never heard of peppermint spirits. I have some peppermint extract or oil
from the Hobby lobby candy makng section and will dittos the person who
said to treat it gently. I use two toothpick dips into a half gallon jug
of magic herbal elixir and that is plenty to make it taste very minty.

That's what they say. And while I love the taste and the smell of it, it
would always make me very sick to my stomach. And now I know why. I am
intolerant to mint. :(
