So for the last several years we see these packages hanging
unrefrigerated in the stores.

I would always ignore those and look for the packages still
refrigerated-buying sandwich-style if neccesary. This year the grocery
stores here have reached a new low-none of them are refrigerated.

The pepperoni doesnt look right it didnt bake the same and it didnt
taste good! The expiration date is still a year away!

Yuck!

It's a good idea to check the package carefully these days. Some
pepperoni has chicken in it or made from turkey - a horror!

In my experience, Hormel products are never very good. Their canned
chili is awful.

I think they put it in the refrigerated area because shoppers look for
meat and sausage there. There are a lot of sausage products that do
not need to be refrigerated.

My favorite canned chili is Stagg Steakhouse Chili. It's quite different
from other canned chilis. You can get a 6 can package at Costco. I
haven't bought canned chili in a while but the next time get to Costco I
will. I plan to open a can and spoon some on a tortilla, fold it, and
fry it on the contact grill. Instant lunch!

If you're going to live off canned goods it's important to get a good
mix so you don't get sick of it. OTOH, there are probably people that
could eat the same thing every day. These people prefer predictability
and consistency and efficiency over everything else. I guess you're not
one of those people.

He's a stinkin' drunk. He eats whatever is easy to make. And he only eats once a day so it doesn't interfere with his buzz. If you ever met him, you'd be shocked at what a mess he is.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see how someone would love it. It's like
nothing else, and is so unique that I wouldn't even call it chili. I
find it almost sickeningly sweet, and centered around bell peppers
The "beef" in it pretty nice for canned "chili."

I think all canned chili is deficient in beef, and I quite like Chilli
Man Lean Beef variety with added ground beef and some extra cumin.
Hormel has nothing going for it. At least ConAgra doesn't make frozen
pizzas. Those folks "could f*#% up a wet dream."

Stop lying, you drunk piece of shit. You've never been near a college. Here's a tip: soup kitchens are not for college students. Rummy.

You're absolutely right. Pepperoni doesn't require refrigeration. If I
want pepperoni I buy a stick and slice it myself. I can't speak to what
the Hormel slices are made of. Maybe I'll buy some the next time I buy
a frozen pizza ;)

Yes, here they put in the refrigerated _meat area._ Not refrigerated but right there to get your attention. Hormel also makes a turkey version, I have not bought it and don't intend to.

Tonight I took another chunk of french bread and used Hormel Calabrese
Salami (also bought unrefrigerated) and it was delicious. There is a
salad dressing called Ken's and they sell Three Cheese Italian Dressing.
Superb on subs-spread on the bread, top with salami, bake till the
salami starts to curl its edges, then top with mozzarella and lightly
brown.

Hormel must be doing something unpleasantly different to their regular
pepperoni which I have been buying for 35yrs.

You pretty much described the popular chili served here. It's called
"Zippy's Chili" and the best you can say about it is that it's
non-offensive. Rumor has it that it's made with mayo. What can I say?
We're not all that into chili over here.

Well, at least he admits it anyway. That's kind of unexpected.

As I recall, the turkey pepperoni had a funny pale look to it. Turkey is
like a vegetable these days. They try to make fake meat products that's
supposed to look like the real stuff but it just comes out weird and
funky.

I saw some hanging unrefrigerated that was not expired and moldy. Not sure
of the brand.

How can the same city have the worst pizza, but the best pepperoni?

Agreed.

Hormel is my second favorite common brand of pepperoni. I like it
better than some of the uncommon imported brands. My favorite pepperoni
is Bridgeford. Not associated with the charcoal company.

Hormel is pretty generic dull stuff.
Lately I like Margherita brand dry cured pepperoni. Long, thick sticks
of it. Yum~

Secret pleasure- pan fried thin slices (drained on paper towel) slipped
into a peanut butter on toast sandwich. Yum!

Actually Hormel makes several kinds of pepperoni, the kinds most folks
find at stupidmarkets in plastic packaging is awful, but they make
*real* pepperoni (Rosa Grande) and that's what I buy... it must be
kept refrigerated... many delis sell it by weight, by the single stick
or as many as you want:
http://www.hormelfoodservice.com/products/product-details.aspx?itemno=6629
Typically sold in pairs, looks like this:
http://media.fooducate.com/products/images/180x180/00D59034-513A-4041-03B6-F7392811C3A5.jpg
Once you try Homel Rosa Grande you'll never go back to Margherita.

Pepperoni is a cured meat, when done right,
and doesn't need to be refrigerated.

Hormel mass market pepperoni, however, ISN'T 'good' pepperoni,
and DOES SAY on the front of the package to refrigerate after
opening, and has a "prepare or freeze by' date on the package.

When they sold STICKS instead of only sliced, I'd leave it
out for days, even weeks, with NO problem. I still do on other
brands.
