Angelina Jordan got famous for singing the wildly inappropriate "Gloomy Sunday" AKA, "Hungarian Suicide Song", in the style of Billie Holiday. The good news is that she sings the somewhat less depressing version of the song with the music changing to a Major key and the singer finding that it was all a dream and that her lover is not really dead so she doesn't have to take a fistful of pills or hang herself.
The composer, Rezső Seress realized that he would never be able to top GS with a second hit. He died in a wildly appropriate way - if you know what I mean.

I have seen a vacuum tube hearing aid. It's pretty wild. By the time I got on the scene, the aids were solid state analog amps with miniature condenser microphones and dynamic speakers. I used to assemble the hearing aids. The speakers would determine the power output while the choice of microphones would set the frequency response.
These days the hearing aids are computer controlled, with a digital sound chain, using multiple frequency radio to connect with each other and the outside world. These computer controlled, wireless connected, devices are powered with a single 1.4 V zinc-air battery. It's some pretty amazing technology although not any more remarkable than a modern smart phone.

It did have a remote amplifier unit with a wired receiver. Those things must have been a Godsend for people with hearing loss. The all-transistor models must have been a big advancement in hearing aids. The Zenith Radio Corporation made a lot of those hearing aids.

So you're just wrong again. You score remains perfect. I did indeed fix hearing aids. I may have been the only one on this rock that was able to do this. I also made custom shells for the aids. What I did was pretty remarkable. You also wouldn't believe that I had a 3D scanner. You're such an envious little boy.

That was my impression too. She needs better song choices or

I genuinely think that was awful. But she's still basically a child,
so it's not her fault of course.

There are tens of thousands of 'talents' like this out there.
Just having a 'good' voice or being technically skilled at an
instrument does not make you a talented artist.

Late cold-war technology achieved impressive miniaturization of vacuum-
tube tech by the Russians. It was not so much that they did not have
access to transistor technology, it was more to manufacture circuitry
that still worked after a close nuclear detonation. Thus missiles might
still find their marks, &c.

Nowadays, people with hearing aids can just lower the ear-flaps of their
aluminum-foil hats.

Bombs-away!

Her voice impressed the judges, not the choice of song. Yes, she's very
good. She's more suited to singing Whitney with those trills. I would
not want to listen to her rendition from Queen/Freddy Mercury again.

IIRC, yes. Used to see many ads in 50's National Geographic mags for them. Zenith and Audiotone were ISTR major brands...

And they were expensive, they were advertised in the NG because it catered to an
"upscale" demographic...

Eleanor Roosevelt used a hearing aid, and when she was tired of hearing her adult

I've never worked on vacuum tube hearing aids. Those disappeared right before the 60's. The aids I worked on would fit inside one of those tiny tubes. Back in the old days, you could get the components and assemble a hearing aid. The battery current drain on those simple analog circuits would be around .35 mA. These days the computer control chips are proprietary as is the software that controls them. Modern hearing aids have a battery drain of around 1.2 mA.

I repaired aids from 1988 to 2016 - when I closed down my business. These days, I typically won't bother trying to repair a hearing aid. I just send the aids in to be repaired by the factory. The great thing about that is most times the manufacturer won't bother trying to fix the aid either. They just replace it with a new unit.

My office did get flooded twice from leaks from the floor above me. I closed up shop after the second time.

Ok, I had to look for a few seconds. She ruined the song, but that's

The harsh reality is that in this society, you have to consume items in order to match the output of factories. If there's no consumption, the factories will close and businesses will shut down. People who buy a new TV every five years or a phone every 2 years insure a strong and vibrant industry. We all know what happened in the heyday of the desktop computer.
Hearing aids are typically rated to last 5 years. The industry is built around that premise. If your hearing aid is over five years old, most places would try to sell you a new aid. For aids that cost $2500 to $8000 a pair that's a tough pill to swallow. If a dealer tells you that your 5 year old aid can't be repaired - I'd go to someone else.
Since I was able to repair aids, I didn't follow that industry standard. I would just repair the aid and charge 65 to 99 bucks. Some aids were quite hairy to fix. After a decade or so the wiring would be mostly corroded and would fall apart if you looked at it funny. These days, my eyesight is blurry, my hands are shaky, and I'm afraid to crack open an aid. I did repair an aid for an rfc'er back in the old days - I'm still waiting for my 25 bucks.

That's understandable. My grandmother spent thousands of dollars on a
hearing aid maybe a decade ago, perhaps a bit longer. She hadn't even
used it for half of that time, because it didn't work well. No one
wanted to fix it; she eventually spent an ungodly sum on a new hearing aid.

> I did repair an aid for an rfc'er back in the old days - I'm still waiting for my 25 bucks..

That's a shame. When someone online goes out of their way to help me,
whether a car group or whatever, I do my best to make it worth their
time, because that's just a nice thing to do. A guy mailed me his car
radio with $60 to fix it, and a year later, I still didn't figure it
out, and had forgotten about it. He called and asked if I would refund
him, said he didn't want the radio back. I mailed him $75 instead of $60.

A guy who I'd only met once in Columbus bought a really nice convertible
Geo Metro for me because I couldn't get there in time, with his own
money, and told me to come get it and pay him when I could. When I
showed up, he told me that he appreciated it, because otherwise, he just
bought himself a $1,400 car that he didn't really want. I gave him an
extra $100, and he really seemed to appreciate that.
