Spice: "Cominos" vs. "cumin"?

"Comino," it seems, is Spanish for cumin.

What puzzled me was that "cominos" was the term used in the 1962 "The Eating-in-Bed Cookbook," by Barbara Ninde Byfield, murder mystery/humor/fantasy artist/writer. (It was in the recipe for chocolate chili.)

Does anyone know why she wouldn't have just said "cumin"?

Because the two terms, cumin and comino, are interchangeable. At
least that's been my experience. My kitchen is never out of the
stuff. Always grind your own whole seed for best results. Stored
ground, it loses flavor intensity fairly fast.

I did a bit more searching and it seems that "comino" means whole-seed cumin.

On top of that, the words are not really interchangeable; the stores I called (all of which were well-stocked in spices) had never heard the word "comino."

I've been using the stuff for decades and never heard that
distinction anywhere. I've also been doing business with a
venerable old seed and spice supplier all my life and the
product list offers:

"Comino, Ground (Cumin)"
"Comino, Whole (Cumin). "

That’s fine but I don't put a whole lot of culinary stock in
what stock clerks and checkers in my local stores know about
food, which is generally very little. YMMV. Cookbooks have
referred to comino and cumin for decades IME, both meaning the
same thing. YM obviously V's.

Probably. Normally (meaning most but not always) when you see it as
comino, they mean whole seed or crushed but not ground. Ground usually
in the USA is called cumin.

Most of it is grown in India and the middle east but Mexico actually
crops a fair amount as well. I get Meican grown comino when I find it
because it seems to be fresher when it gets to the market here but they
aren't (according to google) a big producer.

OK, here's the recipe. As I recall, the chili is something of an acquired taste - but most chilis taste better after a day in the fridge, anyway.

Page 67.

Brown in a large, heavy skillet

4 chopped onions
2 cloves garlic

and, when brown, add

2 tablespoons each

Cominos
Coriander
Oregano
2 #2 cans Italian tomatoes (a #2 can means 20 oz. or 18 fluid oz.)
2 cups water
Chili powder to taste

Cook slowly for about 5 minutes, and add

4 tablespoons sugar
2 squares bitter chocolate
1 tablespoon of salt

Cook slowly, covered, for one hour. Make meatballs from

1 lb. ground beef
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup crushed cornflakes

and brown them in a little oil. When the sauce is ready, add the meatballs and

1 #2 can kidney beans

Cover again, and cook slowly for one more hour. Serve on rice.
