Jill asked "What should I do with shrimp?" and that gave me the
inspiration to just go to the kitchen and take my own advice. I
didn't have time to wait for her to dilly dally asking the Internet
for suggestions. Women, I tell ya....<rolling eyes>.

Thai Shrimp and Mussel Curry

Shrimp from Thailand, mussels au jus (Argentina), leek, carrot,
ginger, garlic, Mae Ploy red curry paste, chicken stock, rehydrated
coconut milk, cornstarch slurry, and a couple sqwertz of nam pla
served over jasmine rice. FLAVOR BOMB!

OK, what's going on here... I've seen a few posts in a row *only*
related to cooking on RFC... are y'all sick? Lol

My daughter's mother gave me a big bag of those gigantic frozen unpeeled
shrimp. They looked good, but I was going to waste them on a stew or
something lazy, so I gave them to my mother instead. I can't imagine
what those things cost; probably an arm and a leg. I'll live
vicariously through you, it looks great!!

Shrimp are only $6-$7/lb and you don't "stew" them. At th least,
you just toss them around in a medium heat skillet in garlic butter
until they're pink + 45 seconds for 20-24ct shrimp.

There's no easy way out Bryan, you have to include how much of each ingredient.

Shrimp are fairly reasonably - priced, as piscine protein goes...

Even the huge ones? Last time I checked, those things cost the same as
fancy steaks per pound.

Cheap because they are farmed. If you can find wild caught they are
worth the extra price.

They must be cheaper if you buy Asian ones. You know, the type that
live under a large chicken coop and feed off the droppings.

Nope, far more more affordable, see my comments in another thread...

Shrimp, especially if bought cooked, is not much more than hamburger these daze,
this is a regular purchase, a bag lasts me awhiles:

Amazon Fresh Brand – Cooked Extra Large Peeled & Deveined Tail On Shrimp Value
Pack (26-30 Count/Pound), 2 lb (Frozen),

Price: $19.99 ($10.00 / lb)

Cheap 80% ground beef is running about $6.00/pound, and there is shrinkage with that...

Amazon is showing my regular - purchase 10 oz. NY strip steak at $15.00.lb, I was at
Target this morning and it was the same price...

I have a few of the strips in the freezer, got them earlier this winter at IIRC about $10.00/lb...

Lucky I don't have a family to feed, I'd be carefully budgeting...

I never paid close attention to shrimp price, but it usually seems high.
I rarely buy it. I'm a bargain shopper. If I'm getting ground
mystery beef, I won't pay a penny over $5/lb ;)

Way too much. I pay $12 for 26-30 size shrimp in 2 lb bags.

$3.25/lb here.

You need to stop shopping Amazon/Hole Foods and fin real grocery
stores (not Target, either).

The only wild ones I'll buy are Sea of Cortez and Argentinian Reds
and those are still only $7-$9/lb. Gulf shrimp taste like iodine to
me and often trigger my shrimp allergy.

Especially when bought near beachy areas like Hawai'i. Its probably more expensive as you go inland.

I think shrimp/prawns handle freezing much better than mussels, let
alone oysters.

Shrimp is always more expensive than ground beef.
The local caught fresh shrimp is always more expensive than the frozen.
I've had both. I buy my shrimp from the grocery store. It's frozen and
from far away.

Most seafood is just fine after being frozen.

He said "most", not all. Clams are very often minced and frozen for
use in chowder. On Lung Guyland Clams are sold at most supermarkets
frozen in cardboard cartons the same as milk cartons, whole and
minced.
