Seven of the ten still - extant Blockbuster stores are in Alaska, tert:

Yep. it costs a lot to eat up there. Parts of northern Canada are worse.
Up in Nunuvat groceries cost at least twice as much as they do down
here. During the winter stuff is shipped on ice roads. During the
summer coastal settlements are supplied by ship. Everything else is
flown in, and that adds a lot to the cost.

When we moved to CA from HI back in '78, I was shocked at the milk prices. It was less than 2 bucks. I took this as a very good sign.

I think one would need to acquire a taste for whale blubber and caribou
soup etc. in order to live there

I'm sure those long cold Alaskan winters produce an abundance of
lactating women. . .

I wish we still had a BBuster...there is one "live" video rental store in my area,
but it is 15 miles away.

I'm glad we live in a streaming world. I once had to accost a guy who lifted a video that I had dropped off at the Blockbuster return desk. This was a big kid. Boy was he surprised. He thought he was getting away scot free until I popped open my car door and blocked his way. I risked my personal safety/well being for a video tape. Ha ha. That was nuts. Evidently, I'm fearless when it comes to protecting my family and my video tape. :)
