Instead of buying that worthless $850 camera a year or so ago you could have
bought a really nice laptop or desktop for half the price. Thus, leaving you with
$425 to blow on something else as worthless as your camera.

The Linux community could have created something beautiful and powerful but they were so clueless about how people used computers that they let their big shot at making an OS that everybody would want to use slip through their fingers. OTOH, the computers I use are all Linux based, as are most of the computers in use today i.e., Chromebooks and Android. Your best bet if you have an old computer is not Windows or Linux - it'll be Chrome OS or FydeOS. FydeOS is similar to Chrome OS except it's been de-Google-fied.
If you know how to get into the BIOS menu of your computer you should be savvy enough to install Chrome OS or FydeOS.

See? Make up your mind. Computers are hardware and therefore
based on RISC, x86, x64, ARM, etc... And other than embedded
systems, have the ability to run any arbitrary software operating
system. Computers are based on hardware components, not software
operating systems.

As for actual full-scale "computers" for end-users (which
outnumber full scale hardware servers 200 to 1), 70% of them run a
Microsoft Windows operating system. Not ChromeOS or Android.

That's a very limited definition of computer.

Here's a more standard definition:

"A computer is a programmable electronic device that accepts raw data as
input and processes it with a set of instructions (a program) to produce
the result as output."

And that contradicts my *non-definition* of a computer, how? I
simply stated a computer was a hardware device with an (implied)
CPU (or rather a large concentrated mass of transistors). A
calculator is an example of an embedded system without an
"operating system", which I also mentioned or implied.

No shit? <rolling eyes>. It is indeed, as is my own brain (your's
too, I think). So was my rotary dial phone back in 1972. But the
point was that computers are not software or operating system
based. They are hardware devices that react to arbitrary patterns
of electron states. They are not operating-system based, as in
his usage.

Go away. You're defending an idiot and just trying to be
difficult. Stop humping my posts with these time-wasting non-
arguments. if you want me to teach you something, just ask. You

A basic telephone is a very simple communications device with zero
computing power. It connects to a telephone switch over wires. The first
telephone switches could maybe be considered computers, and they became
more “computer-like" as the switch generations advanced.

Does it retain logic? Perform logical operations? Not much more than a
light switch.

I've got a Win10 laptop. That one plus the older Win7 laptop and even
older desktops will go "off" after about 3 days using the internet. I
guess some websites aren't quite right.

I generally have to do a total shutdown about twice a week to fix
things. It's no big deal and it *does* fix things. The problem is
usually just running too slow.

My old Win98 computer never uses the internet now and it will be fine
for weeks just letting it "sleep."

MS are so poor on updates my computer is set to take updates about six
months after they arrive, that way MS have hopefully fixed the
wobblies! I learned that after my computer and about 40,000 other
computers had to be completely re-installed, at least I had the main
things like pics duplicated on an external HD so didn't lose them
entirely. MS never admits responsibility re disasters like that :-©

For years now, once a week, I completely turn off the computer and
restart the next day. Works wonders!

Or your browser has what we call a memory leak. Memory is allocated,
but not deallocated when it's no longer needed. Eventually, your
CPU's memory has too little left to do other tasks.

Or your hard drive is so full (or so filled up with active program data)
that it runs out of "swap" space. (The OS uses hard drive space to
conserve RAM and swaps back and forth depending on what's needed at
the moment.)

Probably a memory leak, then.

> My old Win98 computer never uses the internet now and it will be fine
> for weeks just letting it "sleep."

Since it's not doing anything, it's not allocating memory for any
processes.

They have been like that since the days of MS DOS. They were always in
such a rush to get out the newest versions that they got released them
with a lot of bugs. At least they now upgrade automatically, which is
probably better than charging a hefty price for the newest version.

He explained it. He was turning the laptop off rather than going
through the normal shutdown process. I'll bet the black screen that
came up when he powered it back up and was informed "Windows did not
shut down normally. Do you want to restart it normally or start it in
Safe Mode?" threw him into a tizzy.

That is not an excuse. Windows 10 is no different from Windows 7 in
that regard.

I don't generally shut mine down, either. I'm still running Windows 7
but it goes into sleep mode without closing the lid. Press any key to
wake it up.

Saves boot up time. Possibly saves wear on components but I have no
evidence to say for sure.

I restart about once a week. Shut off when traveling. Last time this
was fully off was October.

I've had this "browser memory leak" for a couple of years. Sometimes, I
have to restart the browser after every few pages I load. Restarting
the computer helps for a time. Any clue how to fix it? It's been
driving me nuts for some time.
