Today at Kroger I was able to snag two decent Boston butt roasts. Also
bought two small mesh bags of petite red potatoes. The pork will be
smoked and the potatoes will be turned into Steakhouse Potato Salad; a
great recipe posted here several years ago. These dishes will be shared
with a neighbor across the alley, not the same neighbor who brings me a
plate on occasion, and a friend of hers.

They will be contributing some sort of tomato dish and a dessert and some
fruit and possibly wine.

What's y'all's plans if any??

Weather permitting - 60% chance of rain here - I'll be set up down on
main street selling my house plants that didn't sell on Mother's Day .
We have a booth at an antique mall and the owners have offered me some
sidewalk space . I have a few plants in the booth (actually she's spread
them around the store) and she likes what I'm offering . We'll also have
our two youngest granddaughters here , their parents also have a booth
at the mall and they're coming up to stock/restock . The girls have
requested hot dogs on G-Paw's home made buns ... and I'm going to see if
my loving wife will make her potato salad .

Good luck!

No rain is predicted here just hot in the low 90's. I was out earlier and
it still feels awfully hot and no a breeze stirring anywhere makes it seem
hotter than it is.

Fireworks are totally illegal in Virginia Beach. Get caught
and it's a class-1 misdemeanor with fine and up to a year
in jail. And this is the "land of the free?"

> Might sit outside but damn. it's cold here.

I looked up Bothell weather:
Lows in the mid-50's and highs around 70
All for the next few days.

I'm jealous. I'd love some of that refreshing weather.
Here, it's lows in the 70s, humid and no wind
High today in the lower 90s
And it's only going to get worse in the next 2 months. ;-o

In the Netherlands, "legal" fireworks were always allowed on New
Year's Eve. Each year, people lost fingers, eyes, etc. And pets got
lost, old people got scared etc. I once walked from my house to my
parents' house on New Years Eve. It felt like walking through a war
zone. Now they're starting to ban it more and more. Maybe not so free
is sometimes better.

I'll never forget one New Year's Eve. At the time, I had a nice
black neighbor who had a "gang like" boyfriend that would visit
sometimes.

That night, I was in my bedroom watching tv and at midnight
I heard 5 LOUD bangs right outside my building. Sounded
more like gunshots than firecrackers to me.

Next morning at dawn, I went outside (as usual) and right on
the grass there were 5 spent 38cal shells. Arrghh! ;-)

It's the day that "Francis" wrote our crappy national anthem.
Each weekday morning at 3:58am on NBC, they feature a
different singer butchering it. Very annoying to hear.

lol!

Actually, I see that's not the day but it is the day he
wrote about.

"Some activists are calling for America to find a new
national anthem, and one popular proposal has put forth
John Lennon's "Imagine"."

That would be cool. One of my favorite Lennon songs and
John Lennon was my favorite musician too.

Another good change choice would be "America the Beautiful'
sung by Ray Charles. He nailed it.

The Star Spangled Banner was written on September 14, 1814.

Then. Don't. Listen.

Still nope. He wrote about the defense of Ft. McHenry, which
took place on September 13-14, 1814. Absolutely nothing to
do with the Revolutionary War.

Hardly a barn-burner to sing at the outset of sporting events.

America the Beautiful would be fine. But sung straight, as you'd
like to have our current national anthem sung, not mucked about
as Ray Charles sang it.

Ray Charles did a good rendition.

Correct though, our National Anthem should be played by a
good band playing original tempo and notes.

There have been fireworks going on all night and *every* night in my quiet town for a month now, started during the "riot" weekend, some nights it is like loud and rumbling thunder. Articles in many big city news outlets about this...it is now a "thing", apparently...on some of the Chicago neighborhood FB and other froups there are constant complaints...

Here you just have to pop over to Indiana fer yer fireworks fix, many places with gaudy billboards and such just over the IL/IN state line...

Melba's Jammin' posted this recipe several years ago and I snagged it. I've
yet to make it that someone does not ask for the recipe and it gets rave
reviews.

Steak House Potato Salad

Servings: 4 - 6

A great salad without the bite of the vinegar in mayo.

1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules or base, dissolved in 1
tablespoon hot water

1/2-pound bacon slices, (maybe 6-8)

1/2 heaping cup mayonnaise

1 heaping cup sour cream

1 - 2 shallots diced or snipped chives

6-8 medium new red potatoes, scrubbed and boiled until tender

Dissolve the chicken base in water and set aside to cool. This ingredient
is important to this dish, do NOT omit!

Cut the bacon slices into 1/2" wide pieces and fry slowly until crisp
but not burned. Drain well and cool. OR place bacon strips on a
baking sheet and cook in the oven. Drain, cool, and chop.

While bacon is cooking, quarter the potatoes into bite size chunks in
a bowl. Combine the chicken base, mayo, and sour cream, stirring together
until smooth. Stir in onions and crisp bacon pieces; pour over
potatoes, mix, correct seasoning, and chill several hours or overnight
before serving.

→ Overnight is best. ←

Adjust measurements as required, but that's about the right ratio of
mayo to sour cream. Recipe is easily doubled.

They've been going off for close to a month here as well. The big
fireworks display they put on here every year has been canceled. What
else is new? We can't have people congregating for fireworks but we
certainly can encourage them to amass in a crowd of about 10,000 and
march.

My wife left for Long Island yesterday to visit with the grands, this
is her first visit since the virus started, she'll return on Monday. I
really didn't plan dinner for me for today, I'm thinking an omelet
with caramelized Vidalia onions and cheese (probably Sargento Baby
Swiss). Tomorrow will be the usual 4th of July fare, frankfurters
(Sabrett all beef) braised in kraut (Silver Floss). Everytime I see
the name Silver Floss I think of a Silver Back Gorilla.

About a week ago I placed an order at Amazon for a memorial stone for
Jilly, 12" diameter black granite. It was at my front door this
morning, probably delivered yesterday late PM. So I decided to set it
in the ground.

That's sweet and thoughtful.

When I had to have Smitty put to sleep I had him cremated and they made
a paw print for me in plaster with his name on it. There's a large Japonica
bush at my front porch and he used to like to sit under it as he thought it
made him invisible to strangers. I scattered his ashes under that bush.

Yes, a Democrat for a mayor. The city had just started to slowly reopen
and he says to come join him for a peaceful march for George Floyd. Well,
that went over like a screen door on a submarine. Looting, vandalism, and
of course a huge spike in the Covid-19 virus. When you open a dictionary

I just posted the recipe as Melba shared many years ago. The only thing
I changed was your choice of using shallots or snipped chives. That change
only happened as one time I went to the store and not a single shallot to
be had. Unbelievable! Then I spied chives and it's just as tasty and the
little flecks of green look appealing scattered throughout.

"Famed police reform activist charged with inappropriate touching of 13-year-old girl

July 3, 2020 CWBChicago Citywide

Lamon Reccord, a community activist who became the face of police reform activists when he stared down Chicago cops during demonstrations in 2015, is now accused of inappropriately touching a 13-year-old girl, according to a CPD spokesperson...

An inquiry seeking comment from Reccord via Facebook resulted in an auto-reply promising a future response.

In September 2016, WBEZ reported that Reccord was charged with threatening a public official “after he allegedly followed a South Side alderman to her car.” The outcome of that matter was not immediately available.

WBEZ’s story noted that Reccord “is widely known for getting in front of police officers during protests and staring into their eyes. His face was seen on network television and international news sites after a stare down with police officers during protests over Laquan McDonald’s death.”

Nope, this was a dunce democrat. Our previous mayor (Mayor Moonbeam)

All of our previous mayors have been democrats. Can't meet the budget?
Let's increase property taxes instead of looking at what programs can
possibly need a bit of trimming.

You think the decision by our mayor to invite folks to come join his dumb
ass in a march for a dead thug while this Covid-19 was b.a.r.e.l.y. easing
was a smart move?? Since the marching, looting, and vandalism we've seen
an increase in cases, restaurants closing again, and businesses shutting

The President has limited control (except his bully pulpit) over what the
states do in regard to the pandemic. He can withhold funding (directly
and indirectly via refusing to declare a place a disaster area), but
that's about it.

Look at how many governors have told him to pound sand.

If you read carefully, you'll see that her city was opening in a controlled
manner until the mayor screwed the pooch on social distancing.

My grandmother was from Virginia. Her potato salad was:

Potatoes
Onions
Celery
Miracle Whip
Vinegar
Sugar
Salt
Pepper

Then there's German potato salad, which also include vinegar. French
potato salad, which is made with a vinaigrette. And a whole raft of
other vinegared potato salades.

Your President still sets the tone and verbally abuses governors who
didn't want to open fast enough. Those governors were right.

The mayor of Amsterdam also allowed a BLM demonstration to happen
during the Covid crisis. She was so keen to show how politically
correct she was that she endangered public health in the process.

Stupidity is international, but Trump takes the cake.

Huh?
I was in the jr. high and high school bands.
National Anthem was played using sheet music.
The sheet music shows the proper notes
(not all the extra crap that singers add)

It also shows the tempo meant to be played at.
Meant to be played a bit faster than most singers do.

Google a version played by a military band. It's not
so bad when played that way.

Additionally, the song Sheldon is talking about isn't the song you
were talking about.

I'd go for "America the Beautiful" despite its mention of God in
every stanza. "God Bless America" is a complete non-starter for me.

I'd probably prefer "This Land Is Your Land". It's easier to sing,
too.

Do you know nothing about your national anthem? The tune was
originally a British song entitled "To Anacreon in Heaven".

<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Anacreontic_Song>

What instument did you play?
I played the cornet and I now have that back but my lip
muscles have died after 50 years. Can't even get a note
out of the darn thing. (just need to practice)

And yes, I could probably still play that from memory
too. Also all the John Phillip Sousa marches.

I was also troop bugler in Boy Scouts. I still remember
most of those bugle things.

One thing I haven't forgotten is how to read sheet
music (as applied to cornet). I still remember all the
fingering for all the notes.

Old times. I do remember in my early elementary school years,
every morning the class said the "Lord's Prayer" and the
"Pledge of Allegiance".

Don't really recall when the prayer ended but it did.
I wonder if "Pledge of Allegiance" is still said.

I like Vidalias and yes, a big bag, 5 pounds or more will cook down to just

No plans, really. I'll be cooking a nice juicy hamburger topped with
swiss cheese and bacon served on a lightly toasted whole wheat bun.
It's super hot down here so I'll cook it in a small cast-iron skillet on
the stove. Not worth firing up the charcoal grill for just a burger.
I'll have a couple of scoops of Publix (store brand) espresso chip
frozen yogurt for dessert. That stuff is really tasty! :)

Enjoy your day!
