Dang, I just phoned a local IGA store, and their IGA-brand of sugar is
4# for $3.09 - go figure! Oh, this gets better -- I also called a local
Schnucks' and their 4#-bag of sugar is $2.28!
Nevermind ;D However, I am surprised Aldi is more expensive with its
price for sugar!
Sky, who might return that Aldi 3#-bag of sugar and buy 4# from
Schnucks!

Unless these stores are cheek by jowl and you have nothing else to do,
I wouldn't make the return just to save a couple of bucks.
I never notice the price of sugar - a 5 lb. bag lasts me about 6
months.

Same here. I buy the C&H "Bakers" Sugar in that wax carton. It lasts me
at *least* six months since I use so little sugar. Also, I have to
wonder about the source of the sugar -- could have come from beets or
could have come from sugar cane, then the cost of sales and transport?
Perhaps that's the difference in price?
--Lin (don't have Schnuck's, Aldi or IGA here so can't do the comparison
shopping)
Looks like I could get a 5# bag here for $2.49 on sale. Beet sugar.
For some reason the online sale flyer has 5# of beet sugar for $2.49
or 4# of cane sugar for the same price. Perhaps it's part of their
campaign to support local products.

There's a carton of C&H "Bakers" Sugar in my pantry that I've had for a
few years - I've lost how long it's been <G>. To date, I've used about
a third of the carton. It's not often I cook something that requires
super-fine sugar.

I could've sworn I'd read the price sign at the store as a 3#-bag.

I'm about half way through _Sugar; A Bittersweet History_ by Elizabeth

here in socal the price of sugar has been close to $2.99/5lbs. a
local hispanic market had it on sale for $2.49/5lb brand; i bought 4
five lb bags. i've been baking a lot, from scratch, so my need for
the stuff has gone up. two of the bags are going to my friend who
makes jam as a hobby & gives it away.

I'd somehow mistakenly thought the bag of sugar I'd bought at Aldi was
three pounds - it was a five-pound bag. So five pounds of sugar for
$3.09 is more reasonable. That's on par with the $2.99/5lbs. Thanks ;)

Weird. I haven't seen a 5-lb bag of sugar in a long time and I've never
seen a 3-lb bag. All I see are 4-lb bags and 10-lb bags. Huh.

Aldi only sells 5 pound bags. (but it's been a couple of months
since I checked)

I've been making more of a point to buy cane sugar rather than beet
sugar (or un-labeled bags) for some odd reason, but also because I want
to support the southern sugar industries in particular.
Domino sugar comes out of Savannah (The factory experienced a horrific
explosion a couple of years ago and I briefly took care of one of their
burn patients as he was being flown to the burn center)
I have not seen any three-pound bags either, they do sometimes stock
two-pounders though, I guess for the folks that live alone.

I have been waiting for sugar to go on sale to stock up for jam making
this summer, but it wasn't on much of a sale anywhere around here before
the holidays. (It usually is quite a bit cheaper before Easter,
Thanksgiving, and Christmas.)

I've never seen beet sugar here in the northeast and I've never seen 4 pound
bags either. Must be a regional thing.
No, you are right. Cane sugar is more expensive so it's clearly labeled
to justify the price. If it just says "sugar" it's probably beet.

I buy beet sugar to support Michigan sugarbeet farmers. Buy local!
