I finally wore a mask while driving

I finally wore a mask while driving. The air was so bad in Detroit
that I picked up my KN-95 mask and put it on while traversing
the Motor City. It seemed to help a little bit, although the fit
wan't as good as a proper particulate mask. I might consider snagging
one out of the workshop before my next trip out.

I set the car circulation to interior, no outside air. Windows closed and Fan or AC running. House fan running when AC was off. Wtf, doesn't Canada have satellites with infrared censors, and water tankers ??

If you ask me, the air is going to be getting worse in the future. Contingency plans will have to be drawn up in order for people to breath. Our best bet would probably be to live underground and to evolve into superhuman mole-men. That would be cool.

Due to Canadian wild fire smoke? I recall posting not long ago (here or
elsewhere) that the air was fine here, and people in my general vicinity
were over-reacting. Obviously, it flew over our area at first, weeks
ago. This is no longer the case, as of this morning.

The air wasn't great here the past couple of days, but this morning, I
woke up to a white haze, almost like a fog, outside... The air reeks,
and is very irritating to your throat. I wish that I closed the bedroom
window this morning, because the room stunk when I got home.

I probably wouldn't run it even if I had it; I just don't care to
quadruple my electric bill. The smell inside settled out in short
order. Luckily, it's cool enough yet that I haven't missed having the
windows open the past day or so. Either I'm getting used to the smell,
or it's getting better. It's still a bit hazy out, but I hear it's
supposed to clear up in our area by late week-end.

Or you went nose-blind to it, and are still inhaling the particulates,
benzene, formaldehyde, etc.

i have also noticed it indirectly most of the time
but i'm now done with planting so i don't have to be
outside much anyways as long as it rains once in a
while and some weeding here or there. the next lawn
mowing will be the harder job but oh well, that's
just once in a while.

For some reason, probably based on your posting style, it's difficult to
envision you as "delicate and elderly". Either way, I hear that in your
region, the air quality was a lot worse than it was near me.

When it first settled in, it smelt of burning plastic almost, and it was
not easy to breathe. We had a heavy rain storm today, and it certainly
helped. I had the windows open again to enjoy the cool rainy breeze
this morning. It's now hot/humid, so closed they go.

I don't humor the miserable prude. They hardly have central air over in
the UK anyway. It's hardly 74 degrees inside right now, and
comfortable. Sophia is happy and playing upstairs. She said she'd
rather be outside, but everything is soaked from a heavy rain. I
couldn't install central air, even if I wanted to, on a boiler system.

You're a perfect candidate for a mini-split. You could have separate
units for upstairs and downstairs.

While I use a swamp cooler, I'm sure this is correct. Change your air
filter soon.
We went through a smoky summer a couple of years ago from Sierra
wildfires. I had pretty blue cooler pads at the beginning. Now, they're
black. I think of the air as charcoal filtered through a curtain of
water, but I can get away with it.

My in-laws use a swamp-cooler, it works like a charm in Oroville California. As an added bonus, it humidifies the air. Unfortunately, those things won't work in our 60-70% relative humidity.

We change the pre-filter every month, and the MERV 8 filter about twice
a year. We check the MERV filter every time we change the pre-filter.

The tax assessor seems to think that my house and both lots that it sits
on are worth $52,900 -- up almost $10k from last year. With looking at
what smaller homes are going for in my zip code, I honestly think I
wouldn't have trouble getting $60k for it in a relative hurry. The

I guess they are better than being homeless... mostly.
