Publix has it on sale this week for $3.79/lb. That's about the lowest
price I've seen in years. Last year right before (and even after) St.
Patrick's day it was still more than that per pound. Of course you have
to buy this one brand, Murphy & David's.

They are also offering Grobbel’s Lower Sodium Corned Beef Brisket at the
same price per pound. Low sodium corned beef brisket doesn't make sense
to me. <shrug>

I do love corned beef. This year I'm going to stock up so I can have it
year round. :)

It seems that not too many years ago you could get it for much less
than that. Along with cheap cabbage and potatoes.

Every year people here talk about the $2.99/lb. deals. Every year, I
sigh. Those sales just don't happen in this area. I don't remember
getting it for that price when I lived in west TN, either. Enjoy it!

Low sodium CB makes much sense to me. I'm an angry young black jewish male; I've been disallowed excess sodium by my rabbi. Too much sodium, and my foreskin starts to grow back. You???

I stock up this time of year. Throw it right into the freezer. I have
learned to make pretty decent pastrami from packaged corned beef on the
smoker.

We also like corned beef and cabbage.

I definitely will stock up because I love corned beef brisket. I also
love cabbage. The farm stands should be selling cabbage right about
now. Grilled cabbage is wonderful. If it will stop raining long enough
for me to grill. LOL The sun did come out today, which is nice.

I've yet to see these $2.99/lb. "deals" for corned beef people mention
around this time every year. Seems to me I even called WalMart last
year to ask about the price there. I was given quite the telephone
runaround just trying to get a price check. It was comical. I timed
it. I was on hold most of the time. People kept picking up and asking
what I wanted. HELLO?! It took over twenty minutes before I finally
got someone to tell me the price. And no, it wasn't any cheaper. Would
have cost more to drive there, too.

I like shopping at Publix. I can *always* get someone on the phone if I
have a question. When I was thinking about oxtails, rather than just
take a chance, I called first. I was immediately connected with a
butcher who said yes, they had them. He gave me the price per lb. That
sort of responsiveness is as important to me as saving a few pennies. :)

I guess we just live in the wrong places, Gary. Even after St.
Patrick's Day, when you'd expect they might have a glut, it doesn't go
on sale for the prices some people talk about. Same thing with turkeys
(not that I buy turkeys).

If corned beef went on sale last year, it was never a cost leader
price. I thought it remained high. I just added corned beef to my
grocery list, so I'll remember to check it when I'm at the grocery
store.

I noticed yesterday when I was at Cash and Carry that they had corned
beef on special for $2.39 or something like that. The only problem
is you have to buy an entire brisket. At that store, that's between
15-20 pounds. I've done that with an uncorned brisket, but I don't
think we would eat that much corned beef in a year.

I was looking at natural corned beef today. The first one I picked up
was $29! That cured me of the desire for now. It seems to me that I
usually decide to pick up one later, thinking that it'd be marked down,
but that never seems to work.

What is "natural" corned beef... is that like "natural" breasts, no

The one I got was $13, 3-1/2 lbs. Of course it will shrink but still
plenty for me what with the cabbage and potatoes. And leftovers for the
freezer. :) Like you, I don't find them marked down after St. Patrick's
Day. I do keep hoping.

At this rate, it will be sky high just in time for Easter. Bracing

No, it's a card associated with the store and if you have one you get
the lower sales price. I think it's ridiculous to make people use a
card to get those prices. But it also allows them to track what you
buy. Also unnecessary since the cash registers track that info anyway.
They won't get much info from my purchases since I don't plan to shop
there regularly.

Locally, Lucky has a card but it's only to collect points for gas.
When an item goes on sale, everyone gets the sale price. We don't use
the gas brand they are partnered with so I don't bother with the card

I do for the majority of grocery shopping. I don't seem to spend as much
when I pay cash as opposed to using my Visa Rewards Card which I use for
everything else. I only ever lost my purse once when I was young, and it had
2 dollars in it. Whoever found it returned the wallet by dropping it in a
mailbox, so everything else was there. That was way back when, I had no
credit cards at all, and Master Charge was a novelty that few people had.

The card also gets you rewards for those with poor math skills. At Stop
& Shop, for every $100 you spend you can save 10¢ a gallon at
participating gas stations. A fill up is usually about 15 gallons for
me, so I can save $1.50.

For the same items, I can go to Market Basket and spend about $85, but
they have no card program, no rewards program, just lower prices. The
only downside for me is the extra distance I have to travel. I burn
probably $4 more in gas so I have to make it worthwhile.

I carry cash, but never in my wallet for the same reason. Given all the
security problems with debit/credit cards, I've been using cash for even
more purchases.

The loyalty cards are primarilly to lure people back to take advantage
of sale items, but the stores know once there people will buy other
items that are not necessarilly on sale. But it's not a gimmick, you
are under no obligation to shop at any store. Also stores often run
some sort of 'game' where purchases accumulate points to get some
product for free, like dishes, pots, etc. The market in town started
a Monopoly Game yesterday, they give you so many cards to stick on a
paper monopy like sheet of paper, when filled you can trade it in for
a set of bath towels... silly I know but everyone likes to play and it
costs nothing... they did it last year and I got my set of towels,
pretty nice ones.

The last couple of years we've been getting
the Bill Bailey's flat cut corned beef slow-
cooked brisket at Costco. since it's already
precooked, we just put it in the microwave
for approximately 6 minutes per pound, and
for the two of us get one between 3 to 4 lbs.
It is the BEST corned beef I've ever tasted!
Is very tender and not "stringy" and salty,
and is seasoned perfectly.

It makes the BEST sandwiches too, so usually
guy several while they have them and stick
them in the freezer to have during the year.

We were hungry for one last week and couldn't
wait till today, so had one then. I cook the
cabbage, carrots and little white potatoes
separately on the stove with various
seasonings and we feast like kings!

Good luck with that. Re the cards: back in the 90s, the stores just
sent cards out to everyone. Hence, I ended up with a card with my
father's name on it. I still use it today and always am somewhat amused
when I do. Also, one of the local chains (Shaw's aka Star) actually
stopped using that cards a few months ago, and I hope other chains would
follow suit. Unfortunately, they have not done so thus far. If I can
get my daughter to design and make a belt with pouches on it, I will be
sure there is a special place for all of those cards.

I don't carry the cards, they're in my desk drawer... those cards are
accompanied by mini cards... I carry them on a key ring.

My pockets are already bulging. (I hate purses/pocketbooks.) Maybe I
need a mini something or other that will hold the tiny cards nicely

Those little tag cards can easily fit in a wallet... you must carry a
wallet, what about a cell phone in a case.. you can easily attach a
key ring of tags to a cell phone case, or simply tuck them into your
bra... then just bend over so I can scan them. ;)

I don't like bulging pockets, they're not very attractive... typically
I see men with a gigantically fat wallet in a back pocket, looks like
butt cancer... a woman with bulging pockets has to look worse. And
you can't possibly carry all your stuff in a pocket, where do you
carry a check book, any meds you may need, etc.? I've been using a
"man bag" for more than fifty years, a small leather field bag I
bought from Coach, holds all my stuff and a key ring with my tag cards
is attached to a D ring on the strap along with a tiny thermometer I
got years ago from the Land's End company. Get yourself a field bag,
I'm partial to the leather one:

Can do that here in NY too but then you need to announce your phone
number in public... it's easier, faster, and safer to have the card
scanned.

Yeah...back in the day here, 555-1212 was for the local weather. I

For directory assistance here, you dial 411

When I lived in west Tennessee, the number for the time and temp was
JAM-JAM1. 526-5261. 30 years later, it's still a working number. Not
that knowing time and temp in the Memphis area would do me any good. :)

I don't know if there's a local number to call to get time/temp. I
never really thought about it. I just step outside and look at the sky.

It sounds awkward to have both of your hands occupied. I am actually
bringing a purse on my upcoming travels. I hope I remember to retrieve
it when I set it down. Once, since I am unaccustomed to carrying one, I
left it at a restaurant in another state, and then we had to drive
pretty far to get it back.

They make all kinds of things, like wrist bands that hold your

I always carry a pocketbook and I'm afraid to put it down.
I've had to retrieve it more than once. When traveling, that

I need something like that for my wife. She is always misplacing things.
She goes into a store, puts her gloves, sunglasses and other things on
the counter, takes things out of her purse and sets them down. She
invariably forgets something.

She is always putting things in weird places and forgetting where they
are. A couple months ago she was frantically searching for her purse.
She searched high and low. I found it for her by accident. I was doing a
load of laundry and spotted it in the recycling bin. The day before she
had brought in the bins and set her purse in one.

Your wife wears gloves? I'm guessing you mean in the winter. Not like
the days when women always wore fashionable hats and always wore gloves.
<G> When it is cold enough to wear gloves I take them off when I go
into a store and put them in my coat pocket.

It's not a good idea to set all that stuff on the counter in a store.

> She is always putting things in weird places and forgetting where they

She needs to get into the habit of putting her pocketbook in one place.
I always know where mine is because I set it down in the same spot the
minute I get home. Keys go into the purse pocket before I even enter
the house. I never have to search for my keys.

Leather can be dyed at most any good shoe repair shop, brown to black
is easy, can DIY.
http://shop.fiebing.com/c/leathercraft_dyes_leather-dye
Brown is the best color for leather that will recieve a lot of use,
black will more easily show scuffs, scrapes, and wear... but of course
it can always be redyed.

Unfortunately, I can sympathize, because I get distracted paying
or bagging or whatever, then I walk off. I try to be more 'present'
because it is so annoying. I'm big on leaving my sunglasses.

I'd like one of these for when I am just going to the supermarket.

Hah, it's funny except when you can't find your pocketbook, you
can't rest. Feeling of dread. I have gone out to the car in the
night to make sure that's where I left it.

One day, Ron came home with a check, don't remember what it was
for. Within minutes, it was lost. He was getting irritated, I
just had it, where could I have put it?? I've learned to think
like a tall person. Took me a minute and I said I know where it is.
Where?? You put something into the refrigerator when you got home,
bet you a hundred bucks that check is on top of the refrigerator.

If it matters enough for you to care, you can always go online and
change it... or you can get a new card with fake information you *can*
remember. It doesn't matter. They don't care what *you* do. They're
just tracking individuals. One or more places are unknowingly
tracking my entire family because everyone uses the same number to key
in. It's gets me my gas rewards and everyone else gets the discounts
you can get only with a card.

My shopping habits aren't particularly interesting in the
way I feel it would be used against me. Not like that woman
in Texas who used her loyalty card to get a few cents of
muriatic acid, the stuff she used to get rid of her boyfriend's
body. Heh.

It's a good idea. Would come in handy to get the free Easter ham
or whatever, if they even have that kind of promotion where you are.

Yes.. in the winter, and also in spring and fall due to arthritis. She
does take them off when she goes indoors, but she puts them in her
purse. Then when she has a transaction in a store she has to take out
the hat, the sunglasses, the gloves, the car keys.... the wallet. Way
too often something gets left behind.

It is a lose lose situation if I am with her. I watch as she pulls
everything out sets them on the counter. If I say anything I am an
asshole. If I don't..... she leaves something there.

FWIW.... shortly after I posted that she went out and I got to work
painting. The girl from the aesthetics salon called. She had found the
glove my wife had called about after getting home from her appointment.

Me too. My wallet stays in my pocket or it gets put on my dresser. I
hang my keys on a hook in the kitchen. I occasionally put them elsewhere
so the usual routine is to check the pants or the jacket I had been
wearing. Hes purse could be anywhere.

Thanks but I don't really carry enough to warrant one.

That's nice. What would be even nicer is if you got the brass to tell me why you kill filed me. I used to think that you were one of the better people on this NG. I was wrong. If you could tell me what it was that I did that offended you so, please let me know. If you got the brass, which it doesn't look like you have.
