Intellectual.

Google groups is trying out a new appearance. He can't figure out
how to switch back to the old look.

I tried it and didn't like it, so I switched back. I suppose eventually
GG will make the new look mandatory so I'll just get used to it.

Strange. Bryan says John's very intelligent and he knows him better

I think he is easily flustered, either because of the medication or
because of his bipolar disorder. Once flustered, he can't
see his way out of a difficulty.

A computer engineer degree from 1995 is totally worthless
unless he kept up with changing technology which he hasn't.

He's obviously very intelligent - I mean, how many degrees do yoose guys have? OTOH, being perplexed by modern technology seems to be universal in old folks. Being perplexed by humans and relationships seems to be universal in brilliant people. I don't see any mystery at all.

My father-in-law was a computer wiz but he never got the hang of Windows OS and high level programming languages. He used to lick his plate of ice cream clean. That gave my wife PTSD. Is there anything more traumatizing to a daughter than daddy licking their plate? I think not.

I learned how to type in the 60's so I know my way around a carriage return. In the 80's I learned that forcing a carriage return would only cause formatting problems with text. I won't be forcing carriage returns on general principle. It's the year 2020 and nobody should have to do that - at least, not with text. Of course, using the enter key is acceptable between paragraphs.

My suggestion is that people get a modern newsreader or use Google Groups. While they're at it, I suggest they dump Windows too.

That's like saying modern cars are non-compliant with dirt roads. I can read Usenet posts easier, faster, and in more places than you can. I can post easier and faster and in more places than you can. You're stuck to using your machines. That's so primitive. "surfing the internet" is annoying to me.
I began surfing in the Atlantic Ocean in 1968.

There's more to the Internet than the World Wide Web, as Usenet newsgroups demonstrate.

Since you use a browser to access the WWW, browsing is as good as anything.

To return to the original topic, I've switched to the new Google Groups. I suppose I'll get used to it,
just as I get used to it when they rearrange the grocery store.

There were some forums and bulletin boards and such early on. You could
log on with your 300 baud modem to connect to them. All text based.

Usenet was conceived in 1979 and publicly established in 1980, at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, over a
decade before the World Wide Web went online (and thus before the
general public received access to the Internet), making it one of the
oldest computer network communications ...

ARPANET adopted TCP/IP on January 1, 1983, and from there researchers
began to assemble the “network of networks” that became the modern
Internet. The online world then took on a more recognizable form in
1990, when computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web.

Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist, invented the World Wide Web (WWW)
in 1989, while working at CERN. The web was originally conceived and
developed to meet the demand for automated information-sharing between
scientists in universities and institutes around the world.

I don’t like “blog” either. It sounds like something that one would do

I’m guessing that that’s a video log. Is a YouTube video a vlog? If I had

I do view an occasional YouTube video. Am I vlogging? That sounds off too. It

Could be. AFAIK Australia only had BBS and then Internet.

I had a housemates and some friends with computers, using BBSs. I
couldn't see much benefit from it back then - seemed to be more an
exercise in frustration (and huge phone bills) than anything else. I'd
just use their computers and that was enough for me.

The Internet was another matter entirely.
