Can anyone tell an ignorant male retired engineer how to emulate
Heinz sandwich spread?

Is it based on mayonnaise, are the vegetables cooked, what veg?? I
would like to do it same or better, not least because it seems high
cost at £1 per 250g.

Guestimated recipe or a starting point very welcome.

Dave

I have created a fair imitation mixing regular mayonnaise (Hellmans) or
salad dressing with green relish and a touch of Tabasco. In North America,
ingredients of a food product are listed in descending order by volume so
read the label on the real stuff and mix up your own batch.

Try mayo, relish and a little catsup.

Try adding some finely chopped pickled gherkin. That'd be the little green
bits. And a little red sweet pepper/paprika.
Tim.

Sadly, here in U.K. we don't seem to have that lovely Bick's green pickle
relish that you put on hot dogs. We have all the other products from
Bick's, but not that one. It's probably available in London from somewhere
like Harvey Nicks or Harrods, though.

Bick's cucumber relish is also very useful if you want to make hollandaise
sauce.

i guess you'll have to do what they do at krustyburgers, leave some
mayonnaise out in the sun.

Am not from the UK, so am not familiar with what you seek, but based
on how someone described it, try this copycat recipe of McDonald's
Special Sauce. That's what they put on their "Big Mac" sandwich.

Is that the stuff you mean?

from: http://www.copykat.com/asp/copykatrecipe.asp?recipe=214
---
McDonald's Secret Sauce

Notes:
This recipe was developed by Judy Chatham. Although this sauce goes
well on a Big Mac, it also goes well on a sandwich. India relish can
be found at your local grocery store. India relish is a type of pickle
relish, just like there is dill relish, and

Ingredients:
1 C. Mayonnaise
2 Tbsp. Indian Relish Drained
1/2 tsp. Granulated Sugar
2 Tbsp. Thousand Island Dressing

Preparation:
Mix all ingredients well. Let stand for at least 20 minutes, allowing
to sit overnight is desired.

Hello Dave.

I am also a retired engineer. I was born and spent my boyhood in North Yorkshire where sandwich spread became my favourite. I now live in Africa where Heinz Sandwich Spread is not readily available and costs a fortune.

This recipe works quite well.

Homemade sandwich spread
Recipe from: 7/22/1999 12:00:00 AM

Ingredients
30 ml butter
5 ml crushed garlic
1 large onion, grated
1 medium-sized carrot, very finely grated
500 ml grated cabbage
1 ml dried mixed herbs
salt and coarsely ground black pepper
190 ml finely grated gherkin
1 red pepper (capsicum), grated
50 ml mustard seeds, soaked in warm water for 1 hour
5 ml white grape vinegar
400 ml mayonnaise
5 ml lemon juice

Method

Melt the butter in a medium-sized saucepan and slowly sauté the garlic, onions, carrots and cabbage over medium heat for 1 minute. Add the herbs and salt and pepper to taste and sauté slowly for 5 minutes. Stir and leave to cool. Add the remaining ingredients to the vegetables and mix. Spoon into sterilised jars and store in the fridge. Makes about 1 litre sandwich spread.

Add horseradish for a hot version.
I have just experimented with raw ingredients - no cooking. Tastes good but not sure how long it will keep.

Genuine Heinz sandwich spread ingredients for comparison:

Spirit Vinegar, Sugar, Cabbage (contains Preservative - Sulphites), Rapeseed Oil, Water, Carrots, Gherkins (contain Firming Agent - Calcium Chloride), Modified Cornflour, Salt, Onions, Egg Yolks, Red Peppers, Mustard, Stabilisers - Guar Gum and Xanthan Gum, Spice Extracts, Spices, Herb Extract (contains Celery), Flavourings, Colour - Riboflavin, VEGETABLES 35%

Good luck,
Mike
