Any creative uses for Kool-Aid?
People in rec.crafts.textiles.yarn (as in wool etc) newsgroup use it for
dyeing wool. Apparently it's quite colourfast!

When I was in high school, and my Mom wouldn't let me buy Manic Panic (a
punk haircolor that comes in all kinds of colors like fire engine red,
bright green, etc.), we used Kool-Aid. First we stripped our hair with
regular hydrogen peroxide until it was light enought for the color to
show, then applied the Kool-Aid mixed with a little water. Funny thing
is, the Kool-Aid was more permanent than the stuff meant to dye hair!

Glad my Mom didn't kill me,

Jill :-)

Whenever you make that perennial "Rice Krispie Treat" recipe, toss an
envelope in with the ingredients. It turns the treats a pastel color and
flavors them whatever flavor you tossed in.

Yes, I've heard of it's coloring effects. I'm thinking whenever I get a
cat, I hope it has a lot of white fur...imagine people coming over to see a
green/purple/red cat running around your apartment!!! I can't wait! It
sounds SO fun!

Food coloring will do the same thing . . . we used to dye our cat for
Easter.

But is food coloring more messy? Which is less likely to bleed if the cat
gets moist?

You can successfully use Kool-Aid as a fabric dye, but it works best on
natural fabrics, I am not sure polyester would "take" the color. Do not
mix it with sugar. Mix with warm water, soak the fabric to the desired
color, then rinse. Wash in cold water, and wash separately from other
clothing until the water runs clear.

A lot of the wild hair colors you see, is achieved with Kool-Aid.
Sugar-free gelatin also works, but Kool-Aid offers more colors, and the
price is right. There are many Kool-Aid websites on the world wide web,
and there is a FAQ somewhere.

Hmm, dunno. We never had a problem with that . . . it stayed pretty
colorfast for a while (until it disappeared), from what I remember. We
diluted the food coloring w/ a little water, then spooned it onto him &
rubbed it around. I suppose using latex gloves would make sense, but we
always just used a paper towel or something to keep from getting all inky.
Most of the work was done by the cat himself, who would lick the wet spot,
thereby spreading the color. This didn't result in any set pattern, of
course, more of a giant splotch of color on his back/sides.

All right, now, nobody go all silly and flame me for cruelty to animals,
please! It's nontoxic for crimony's sake.

Try Kool Aid Shooters. Make up a batch and substitute Vodka for a portion of
the liquid. Obviously, do not boil the vodka. Let set in the fridge in small
bowls or ice pube trays. Eat and get drunk!

Just out of immense curiosity what does it contain since it can be used
for long lasting cat/hair/yarn dye and also is drinkable????

Basically, Kool-Aid is expensive flavored dye that you add loads of sugar
to. I once saw a price comparison (per ounce) and if I remember correctly,
Kool-Aid was outrageously priced...higher than that over-priced sugary
cereal. It's just that you buy it in such small quanitities, and thus
don't pay TOO much all at once that you don't realize it. So, flavored
foodcoloring....edible and "functional"...

Also, do you use sweetened or unsweetened?

Im considering doing this. (If you're sitting there wondering about this,
I really am.) What colors go well on light brown hair? I wont necessarily
tyake your advice, but I am interested in the voices of experience. I,m
thinking pastel. Are there flavors that will color light brown hair pastel?

OB Food - Years ago I thought it would be3 cool to color my hair light pastel
pink and light paster green so it looked like a bowl of 2-flavored Jello.

On my vacation last week, I dyed my bangs a neato red colour with cherry
kool-Aid. It washed out before I had to go back to reality and it was fun
to have silly-coloured hair again!
All that happiness for only 33cents a package!

I buy it in pretty large containers with sugar. To save money you can
buy really small packets without the sugar, but then the sugar sinks
like in iced tea. It's like $2.50 to $4.00 for a container that will
make a LOT of kool aid, so it's less than soda. Most adults don't like
it.

I'd think unsweetened, especially if you live in a dry summer area with
an ant problem. Ugh. Clairol hydrience tropical red is a very fake
looking burgundy -- like a Pontiac Grand Am (fyi)

Just what I need. Think I'll dye my beard grape. Or, I could hold off until next
March and use lime.

Pre-mix the powder and sugar in a little hot tap water and it will
dissolve completely. Then add cold water and ice to cool it before
putting it in the fridge.

I've found many adults will drink it if you use 1/2 cup of sugar instead
of the suggested full cup, and you if you don't come out saying "Here's
some Kool-aid" but just offer them a drink....

somehow the idea of using SUGARed koolaid to brighten up some hair is very
repugnant...especially in the summer time...what happens if the bees decide
your hair is a big flower and decide to pollinate it?? :)

My dog Bambi has her own eyeliner & blush cuz she went through a stage
where I couldn't leave the bathroom without fixing her face!!!! She'd
jump up on the counter and sit in the sink so I couldn't wash my hands
or see the mirror.
She was a stray and is quite odd. (Obviously) I never applied it so you
could see it.
