Just painted wall for 3 years. Amazingly, it was still fairly clean.
We did not like the builder's offerings so did nothing at the time.

The grout was still wet when I took the photo so it is going to be a tad
lighter.

Shopping for tile can be a pain in the butt. There are so many different
sizes, colours and, textures that it is hard to chose. I have done a
few tile jobs in the house. I ended up doing the work myself. I would
probably recommend getting a professional to do it.

I had strange experiences with the store I dealt with for the first two
jobs. The let customers borrow the tools with a $25 deposit. | opted for
that the first time, got the tile cutter, the glue spreader, squeegee
etc, paid the $25 deposit, did the job, returned the tools promptly and
got the deposit back. Close to two months later I got a call from the
tile store saying their records showed that my deposit had been returned
in error and they wanted me to return them. I was surprised that they
could be so dense and explained to then how it worked... I borrowed the
tools, I paid the deposit, I returned the tools and they returned my
deposit. They were quite convinced I had not and that my deposit had
been returned in error but they finally clued in.

A couple years later I did another tile job and went back to the same
store because they are local. I got the tiles, paid the deposit to
borrow the tools. I finished the work, returned the tools and got my
deposit back. Son of a bitch..... a month or so later they called
looking for the tools and once again claiming the deposit had been given
to me in error.

The next time I had tiling to do I went to a different store.

That is one heck of a nutty story alright. Sorry it happened to you but it's a heck of a nutty story.
When my brother-in-laws were working on our kitchen, they asked me about what to do with the back-splash. I was busy at work and told them to install some small glass tiles that looked nice with a dark grout. My wife and bros done a good job.

I know "how' to do it but never have so left it to the pro. Took him
four hours but probably would have taken me four days. There are four
receptacles and a phone jack to cut around too.

Tile cost is anywhere from $3 to $40 sq. ft. The one I chose was $13
and with labor was still under what I hoped to pay total.

Yeah it was pretty weird that it happened the first time. I was
disgusted when it happened the second time. That's really bloody
incompetent.

That looks pretty good. We ended up doing a brownish coloured tile on
our back splash. I wish we had used something lighter just to brighten

Tiling isn't all that difficult. They are easily cut with a proper cutter
and it is pretty easy to set them into place but the can slide out of
place while the cement before the cement cement sets. Grouting with
the dry mix stuff is easy.

My brother and his wife have the worst luck with contractors. When they
did a lot of renovations to their house about 10 years ago they hired
some guy who was a friend of a friend. They live in a side split and
wanted him to do the hallway in the basement and on the entrance hall.
The guy did a good chop but he had mis-measured or under-ordered and
ended up short one tile. Luckily, he was able to get one locally. Tile
stores don't usually stock tile. They have to order it, sometimes from
overseas sources, and it can take weeks or months to ship.

Probably similar to where you are, but ordering and waiting for stuff
in Australia has been painful for the past year. I'm rebuilding an
engine and I think it's been around 5 months now since I ordered the
parts. Have most but still need some more crucial parts.

I grew up watching "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea." The TV series had a panel that flashed square lights. I loved that stuff. It obviously left a big impression on me. As an adult, I now realize that the lights probably had no useful function at all - except maybe to fill up some space on the set wall.

<shrug> it was very popular here and elsewhere. When I think about it,

For most people, yes. I never found tile installation to be
particularly taxing. The worst part is finding tile that you like that
is also affordable. Many of those decorative back-splashes are very
costly per square foot. I never bothered installing one in my kitchen;
maybe some day.

I bought a wet-saw with a diamond-tip blade to cut tile, it's not hard
to use, and didn't cost a lot. I did my whole kitchen floor in it. It
sounds like your store has a racket going on, to swindle money out of
people.

Nah. I disabled that nonsense by editing the local group policy. Win
10 install takes about 15 minutes... the next 3 hours are all about
disabling shit in Windows.

It's noticeably slower than Win 7, but it got to the point where I was
having issues with some websites and the only fix was an 'upgrade' to
10.

There's the fact that they had just built the house and moved into it
while his wife was ill and she died. That was a factor. I'm glad to
see he found a back splash he likes. There is no back splash in my

Things didn't work out as hoped for. Still glad I made the move but do
miss some friends up north. My kids are here though.

I had thought of not doing the backsplash too. It really is more
decorative than useful for my needs.

The tile though, has more gray in it than when looking at it in the box.
Optical illusion? I considered a plain white subway tile but that is
too common so did not.

My father was not one to put things off. When I was a teen he was
transferred to another city and we moved into a brand new house on Dec.
1. He would get home from work at 5:15 have supper then have a short nap
and start working on the house. The floor had just been finished the day
before we moved in. He put me and my three brothers to work.

We pained the living room/dining room, hallway and three bedrooms
upstairs, papered the kitchen and two bathrooms. They had carpeting
installed and drapes hung. There was a finished den in the basement. He
dry walled the laundry room and work shop and installed the ceilings and
tiled the basement floor. Everything was done by Christmas.

The lighting at the store I'm sure is different from your house. And most
likely that tile will appear lighter or darker depending on the time of day
and how much sunlight your kitchen receives.

Only three years?
Several houses ago we bought an old house whose previous owner was a
trendy male architect. The sitting and dining room were the colour of
tomato soup; our bathroom walls and ceiling were dark forest green.
The soup was a priority in the first few weeks, and while painting it
out (white), I painted on the green bathroom wall " This <deleted>
colour has to go NEXT".
The green and the graffiti, were still there 10 years later...you
can get used to anything.

The older you get, the more it matters for you and your kids to have

Cindy, I like the evil McDonald's food. I'll never see age 90.
I'm not so sure I'd even want to. That's almost 22 years from now and
downhill all the way. gasp.
Bryan will agree with me there. 22 more years without old sex?

Good point though. My mom is 90 and she takes small steps now. If she
ever moves in here, those 10 steps would be good exercise for her to
keep her muscles working. (use them or lose them)

I mentioned the houses I lived in the past. There were tens of
thousands that style One bathroom on the top floor. With a family of 4
or more the stairs carpet wore quickly.

Washing machine was in the basement to you carried the laundry down two
flights to start. They you went up to the living floor until done, then
went down to hang laundry, then up, then back to take it down and carry
it up two flights of stairs to the bedroom.

I had to take a Tylenol for my knees just writing about it.

We have four steps whether at the front door, the back door, or from
the garage into the kitchen... I never considered them an
inconvenience. I wouldn't want a house directly on a slab on the
ground with no steps. There are 14 steps from the kitchen down to our
basement, the goats never complain.

There is a retail store near Pittsburgh called "the tile shop". I
stopped in a few times, just for the fun of it. They had
mother-of-pearl tile, and good golly, was that expensive. I don't
remember the price, but it was substantially more than anything else in
the store. I can't find it on their website now.

I'm not sure how high the Washington monument is, but I climbed the
tallest light house in the country a couple of years ago. As Ed said,
as I am now, I think nothing of the steps to the second floor of my
house, or the basement... or the walk up attic for that matter (until
it's time to carry boxes and boxes of Christmas stuff up two flights of
steps). That being said, that light house was really a work-out. The
tour guide type person said that in the old days, the light house keeper
carried oil up the steps EACH DAY, several times per day, to keep it
lit. They must have been in good shape. Otherwise, they probably had
lots of knee and back issues when finally retiring.

Haha, that's true. The last house that I lived in with my family, my
bedroom had a tiny en-suite bathroom. It was done in the late 40's, and
it had tile on the floors and half-way up the walls, as well as the
shower, in cotton candy pink, with cotton candy blue trim. The rest of
the walls were floral wall paper. It took me a couple of years to strip
the wall paper, and when I finally painted, they miss-tinted the beige
paint, and it had a pink-ish hue to it. I eventually got used to having
a bathroom with pink walls, and pink tile.

Speaking of 90 years old, I got a call from my 2nd cousin (my paternal
grandmother's nephew) the other day. We talk on the phone a couple of
times a year. He turned 90 last December; I think his wife is 87.
They'd just gotten back from visiting a step-daughter in the San Diego
area. Their house is on one level but they do have steps up to their
front porch (crawlspace underneath) which are problematic. Carrying
groceries up the steps is problematic. It's not from lack of excercise,
it's a simple fact of aging. Stairs get harder to deal with.

OK, it wasn't that expensive, but it was well over $16/sq ft. I think

What is the tallest light house in the country, Michael?
Cindy will google it but I'll just ask you.

I've climbed up 2 lighthouses in my days.
The very tall Cape Hatteras lighthouse several times back in the 1970's
before they moved that giant thing inland. We surfed right out in front
of it and it was fun to climb in the afternoons while taking a surfing
break.

Then the smaller but older (historic) Cape Henry lighthouse right here
in Virginia Beach. The lighthouse is shorter but you have to walk up
1,000 steps just to get to the base of it, so it's equally high above
sea level.

Both had a continuous metal spiral staircase. Very steep with no landings.

Then I've also climbed the Washington monument several times as I grew
up in that area. That staircase has landings every 10 steps or so - just
like any high rise has now. Much easier to climb.

I haven't been there in years but I heard that they eventually closed
off the stairway and make people use the elevators.

I'd love to do the Saint Louis Arch tour. That one is probably elevator
only. John and Bryan live there. Wonder if either of them has checked it
out? I seem to remember Bryan saying he never has.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse ~ America's Lighthouse

The Cape Hatteras lighthouse in North Carolina is the tallest in

It was designed to assist sailors navigating the treacherous

There are 269 steps to climb.
The lighthouse was moved in 1999 to avoid erosion.
