I have a recipe for "FART-FREE CHILI", in both regular and meatless
formats, including a very simple process to remove the gas-causing
properties of beans. E-mail me if you want it!

Mr. Happy,

You may, indeed, have such a recipe. You may, possibly, be offering it
to others at no cost, although that seems unlikely from your style.

More probably, however, your post is made of that which you state you
are able to prevent - pure gas!

what's the big deal? just eat "beano" before eating any "offending food,"
and that should take care of it. at least it works like a charm for
me--and i even have trouble digesting applesauce and rice! (sort of a
joke meant to show that MANY foods cause intestinal upset for me--but
nothing that some beano or papaya enzyme won't fix!)

happy eating! please pass the cabbage!

Those of us who are allergic to penicillin can't have Beano. (Don't ask me
why, but apparently it's true. And given that one pill has sent me to the
ER, I don't take chances.) So if there *are* other things that one can do,
I'd love to hear about it.

Well, there's one way that comes to mind. Make your chili like I do and
leave out the beans. My chili is really great, and since I detest kidney
beans, I never put them in. Just a thought......

The herb epazote, when added (during cooking) to bean dishes, reportedly
cuts down on the production of gas. It does impart a taste, which is
definitely an acquired taste.

Good girl!

Besides, as any Tejano will tell you, real chili don't got no beans in
it. You can serve beans on the side. You can even serve chili over beans
(if you wish). But you don't make chili with beans.

Of course, heathens outside of Texas tend to make their chili wrong
anyway, so I rekon it don't matter much what they do anyway. Why heck,
some of 'em even put macaroni in it...

i have to laugh at that. i'm originally from louisiana, and i had never
had beans in my chili until i came to pittsburgh. i think i had it
at someone's house. i actually had to ask "what is this in the chili?"
i pushed them to the side. i loathe kidney beans. my husband loves
beans in chili so, i use pinto beans, which i love anyway.

I propose a simple solution to this never ending chili chauvinism: when
there's beans in the chili, it's called "chili beans." No beans? Just
plain "chili."

Ok, all you Texans, park those flamethrowers.

Ah, this also goes with what you don't like threads :-). I too
hate kidney beans (well okay, they are like limas, just kinda
boring). So when I make chili I too use pinto beans, when I put
beans in. But usually it should be made without tomates or beans.
I make it with a mix of pork and beef and a chili paste made from
dried ancho chilis (when I'm really cookin').

I liked the story I read somewhere about a restaurant (in New Mexico, as I
remember). When you ordered a bowl of "chili" there, that's what they
brought you. Green chilis as I remember, although you could probably ask
for red. No beans. No meat. Nothing but cooked chili peppers.

Close, Mark. As the late Wes Pitts used to say, "chili with beans in it
is a dish called 'chili-with-beans,' which is related to, but not the same as,
'chili.'" ('Chili' used as short for 'chili con carne.')

As chili-heads go, he was pretty liberal. He allowed as how you could
serve chili and beans at the same meal. You could even mix them together in
your bowl at the table, when you helped yerself, if you were a mind to. What
he wouldn't countenance was cooking the chili and the beans in the same pot at
the same time.

For those of you who do like beans in their chile I found a bean I like
much better than the pinto bean. They are called Pinquitos (they're like
a mini pinto bean) and they are put out by S & W. I made some turkey
chili the other night with these beans in it and it turned out great
(again, if you like beans in your chili)! Check out some of the new
S & W products. I really have to admire them, they are not wimpy in
their products. Their Chipotle Salsa it great.

My mother, who is a fabulous Mexican cook, always put baking soda in
the water in which she soaked the pinto beans, which rendered the
beans, uh, more user friendly. Seems to me this would work with other
beans.
