A nicely marbled pan-seared beef filet (filet minon) steak, seasoned
with salt, coursely ground pepper and a little garlic powder, cooked in
a very small cast iron skillet, to medium rare. Fork tender!

In another skillet, this one non-stick, mashed potato pancakes using
leftover mashed potatoes. They go quite well with steak. Really, any
potatoes go well with steak.

The green vegetable was steamed broccoli florets.

Sounds really good and I'd probably add a dash or two of that garlic powder
to the potato pancakes, too.

Sounds good. I can't say I'm fond of mashed potato pancakes, but it
was your meal, not mine. Potatoes go marvelously with steak, but
I so rarely pair them. A slice of bread is so much easier, especially
when I'm pulling together dinner on a work night.

Last night was salad with pepperoni and provolone, but the star of
the show was some roasted red peppers I'd done a couple nights
previously.

My all time favorite steak dinner is:
- steak medium rare (onions and mushrooms too if available)
- shoestring fries deep fried
- loose corn with butter
- piece or two of buttered bread

We love red peppers. How do you use yours?

Cindy Hamilton

Sometimes I eat them raw. On this occasion I put them
on the gas grill until the skin was blackened, then I
slipped the skin off, sliced them into strips, salted
them a little and covered them with olive oil. I
often put raw garlic in, but it was after dinner on a
work night so I skipped it.

When I had my salad made, I laid a pile of the roasted
pepper strips on top.

That's about it. My husband doesn't like peppers very much
(except hot ones), so I don't make much use of the sweet
ones.

I'd rather nuke a couple of spuds than settle for plain bread...
especially with steak. We never eat plain bread at any meal.
Actualy with steak we'd rather buttered egg noodles... egg noodles
cook fast.

Everybody's different. I like bread, so much so that I'll drive
8 miles and pay $7 for a good loaf. I don't eat it plain. Usually
drizzled with EVOO, sometimes buttered.

because sausage is rarely gluten free and beans being in a can are
rarely gluten free. Corn chips are going to be gluten free some of the
time but not all the lett and tom tom was just retarded for you to
even mention it, The corn tortilla was in fact gluten free also. And I
mention it because if someone just so happens to want to try it then
they can know exactly what I used.

I'm sorry to hear of your aching joints. My joints are just fine - it's my brain that's the problem. Perhaps one day, they can plant me in the garden with my head sticking out of the ground and I can witness the passing of the days.

This was a hamburger steak - it's a very popular dish in Hawaii and Japan. I don't know how popular it is on the mainland but we can get the dish in most fast food places. It's pretty mild stuff. I didn't even add any garlic to it. I did add some oyster sauce to the mix. These days, I use oyster sauce instead of MSG when I want to supercharge the flavor. Of course, I always want to supercharge the flavor of things. Don't add too much though.

I did not add any bread crumbs because I wanted to maximize the amount of dripping for a better gravy. This resulted in a rather tough burger. In the hamburger steak world, you either get a good gravy or a tough burger - pick one. It's a fairly complex issue. The simple solution, of course, is to buy a big container of brown gravy mix. I need to do that pronto.

Hamburger steak is extremely popular at NYC diners... I make them all
the time, my 12-14 ounce burgers. In fact we finished the last of them
from the freezer and my wife has been bugging me to prepare more...
only I can't see well enough to drive yet. I keep telling her to go
to the market in town and buy about 20 pounds of top round roasts for
me to grind, but she's too ascared to buy meat other than preground
mystery meat. A week ago she came home with a package of 4 ounce
burgers... they didn't look good but I cooked four anyway. After
frying they were in the pan drowning in deep fat and didn't smell very
good. I told her she can have mine. We ate none, the outside
critters got them, our cats wouldn't go near those nasty things...
they looked very disappointed, they love my burgers, probably thought
I was punishing them. How people can buy/eat preground mystery meat
is beyond TIAD.

Here's a brand that's pretty good. There are others. I could probably get a bucket of the stuff from a restaurant supply store.

Mostly, these mixes are starch, salt, and flavorings. I don't think it would stray very far from that formula. I can't say what the Brits would think of the product. Gravy mix is important to the Hawaiians because we go through a lot of gravy!

Well, as you know I use a machine so 'time' is almost nothing. 5
minutes to load, later 3-4 to shape and after rising, add to preheated

I mentioned I was helping out with a GF diet for a celiac. She's back
on her feet now but I did find GF hotdogs in my freezer. Just happened
all my canned bean types were GF. I think the hot dogs were Hebrew
National all beef?

It does a decent job if you add some of the fat from the burger in.

There are others of course but this is the basic one I keep on hand for
curry gravies. Takes well to added things and reheats decently.

McCormick Brown Gravy Mix
"enriched wheat flour (flour, niacin, iron, thiamine mononitrate,
riboflavin, folic acid) wheat starch, salt, onion, palm oil, beef fat,
caramel color, hydrolyzed corn gluten, soy protein, and wheat gluten,
corn syrup solids, sodium caseinate (milk), spices (including white
pepper), dipotassium phosphate, garlic, natural flavor, disodium
inosinate and guanylate (flavor enhancers), extractives of paprika and
yeast extract"

Love the dipotassium phosphate. Can't have dinner without it! And corn
syrup solids... nice and sweet, yum! Gimme more!

I did not not say that there is anything wrong with anyone!

I realize now that there are 2 different guys in Hawaii. (ds1 & Sheldon)

Sometimes if I was not paying attention to indentation to denote
attributions and I would think I was reading a post from one whilst it
was the other. Sometimes I would assume someone was forging someone, etc.

BTW, thanks for changing your followup separator from ---- to =====. It
makes it possible now to see what you post when we use a real newsreader.

If cheap brown gravy is the taste you're looking for, then it's
exactly right.

There's a restaurant somewhere in the Pacific Northwest (vague, I
know) that I saw on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. It's pub food,
and it's run by an authentic Brit. They make everything from scratch
except the brown gravy. They tried making it from scratch, but it
just didn't taste right. The mix tastes more authentic to the pub
food they grew up with.

Why yes, one of us guys is not like the other. One of us lives in a place where the water is filthy and so is the air. One of us loves Hawaii and Hawaiians and the other hates Hawaiians. One of us uses a proper newsreader and the other doesn't. My guess is that one of us has a brain injury. :)

It was a mistake. I already owned up to it.

It was a mistake I made a long time ago due to using a new newsreader and
not paying enough attention to attributions.

I never noticed in part because I don't read ALL the traffic. If I've
been away for a few days I usually just get today's messages, and even
then I usually look at just a thread or two.

I also suspect that sometimes some people end up getting forged. Usually
when I see a post that looks out of character for someone, I ignore it.
