The quality of the writing on this NG is so much better than on Facebook

Remember, "Who am I? Why am I here?" I revisited this NG after getting a 7 day ban from FB for insulting a dumbass. With all the faults of many folks who post here, the quality of writing on this NG doesn't grate on me. There are no stupid GIFs, nor rampant misspellings of homophones, and it's not just that we skew older, because the half brain dead oldsters on the nostalgia FB pages are as bad as the stupid, cutesy, twenty-something children.

DISinformation! Before I deleted my Facebook acct, I went in and blanked out or faked whatever personal data I could! The most remarkable to me was when I changed my gender to Facebook from "male" to "female" and the Facebook ads to me changed dramatically fromm male oriented to female oriented ads for diets and foods! That was how I knew something nefarious was up!

Turns out it was Surveillance Capitalism as Shoshana Zuboff/retired business professor from Harvard wrote about in her 500+ page book "Surveillance Capitalism and Democracy", of which I read about 1/2 and stopped reading I was so disgusted!! :-(

But why do you post here using Google Groups if you're so against
Google? Surely, you can set up a real Usenet account somewhere.

There are free or supercheap Usenet providers. If you hate Capitalist
Usurper Google so much, stay away from them. $10 and you can post the
rest of your life using a real Usenet provider.

Or buy a 250GB block for $10. You'll never be able to use it up with
text newsgroups.

Google Groups has some serious advantages. It's faster, you can use it on any platform that supports a browser, and you don't need Windows at all. It's also easier to read because it hides quoting - you don't see it until you click on the placeholder link. You can also do a search directly from the interface. The Usenet servers have a limited retention policy - Google Groups goes back to the 90's. In the future, everybody's going to be using GG - they just don't know it yet.

I could set up a Linux-based Usenet client. I don't need Windows at all.

I spend half my damned life clicking that link. It does me no favors at all.

That rumor could be true. It seems reasonable to me. OTOH, they've come up with a new interface for Google Groups so they're not completely ignoring it - not like that you-know-what-legacy-client-program.

Highwinds Media has an archive going back to 2002 - and it includes all
X-No-Archived posts and posts/newsgroups removed from Google Groups.
You'll never see all Usenet posts on Google Groups due to the
X-No-Archive header, so I recommend just using a newsreader. A cheap
block at Newsdemon or a free trial at www.usenet.farm should get you
access to the archive.

Google Groups exposes your IP to the world, so I just use it to read
news - I do all my posting from an actual free Usenet server.

They won't shut it down any time soon due to the G+ suite customers using it.

But there is alot of "racist" stuff on Usenet, it just takes the wrong
person to come across it, make a twitter storm, and Google might shut
down the Usenet portion for good

Protonmail, yahoo, or Microsoft should get the archive - it would fit
nicely with their email operation

LOL thinking about people in my province who do not want to use a
Covid19 tracking app because they are afraid that the government will be
tracking them and gleaning information about them. They don't seem to
have too many issues with the people who are in the business of
collecting all sorts of other data.

It's been a total mess for many years. Google swore and promised they
wouldn't fuck with Usenet and also maintain the old Deja database
faithfully circa 20 years ago. Didn't take them long to try to remake
Usenet into their own image (google groups) and totally ruin the
archive. These large tech companies have been nothing but consistent
in their dishonesty and hypocrisy as they gained control over the
Internet.

Yeah, and NO ONE cares if you reply to a 30 year old post, where the
person who posted it died 20 years ago, and the post was irrevevant
the day it was posted.

Google doesn't do binaries newsgroups, does it? There's still a demand
for those. So why not offer the text groups as well then? That's much
less effort.

Google can offer binary newsgroups if they wanted to; they have the
storage capacity and storage to do so

They have bigger things on their plate.

Fun fact: Gmail started as a direct result of Google Groups
