Saffron at Costco

Today I noticed that Costco had saffron in the spice aisle. The price
was $14.99, the same as Penzeys, but you don't have to pay s&h. It is
labeled La Mancha Spanish Saffron and carries a seal from the Consejo
Regulador.

That seems real high to me. I've been getting mine from saffron.com
by the ounce. [it lasts me about a year] $80 an ounce for *super*
Afghan saffron and I usually get some of their vanilla beans at the
same time. Shipping is about $10 from CA to NY.

We get seasonal displays of vanilla beans and apparently saffron. They
just built us a bigger store and built one on the other side of the
metro area but already it isn't enough. The store is extremely
popular here. I hear about things that other Costco stores in larger
metro areas carry and I am jealous.

Your seems very high to me as well. 8)

We've had extensive saffron swapping and tasting threads here in past years. I
still get my saffron from any one of a number of local Indian grocery stores,
at $25 to $30 for a one ounce tin.

And it won't be red... saffron imparts a yellow hue.

Best to test by cooking a cup of rice, rice is cheap and the worst can
happen is that you'll have flavorless colored rice.

It's a new years eve thing for Germans and Poles. It's supposed to be
the first thing you eat as the clock changes to the new year for good
luck. I just got a jar at Costco only because it was cheap and I had
a taste for it. Costco here carries Vita brand but I prefer Noon
Hour. I love the stuff and eat it all year. It does go on sale in
December but around here it's always in stores including Costco.

There's 7-8 Costco's in the Chicago metro and they all have different
stuff. More-so with seasonal things I think. I had to go get an ION
Tailgater for a friend because the stores by him didn't carry them.
We're only about 20 miles apart.

BTW, in Europe you can readily buy bottles of saffron oil. I've never seen a
recipe that calls for it, however.

I never quite got saffron. Bought some quality saffron, once, and
used it in rice. Seems it either jes colors the rice/dish and offers
little/no flavor, or if more is used, imparts a flavor like eating
dirt. OTOH, I get the same effect from fresh black truffles.

My Swedish step-mom has a jar of saffron. It was jarring to see such a
large amount since we're used to seeing it sold in small envelopes. She
uses it for cookies and breads. She likes making cookies and breads
especially during this time of year.

I took a whiff of it and it was pretty heady stuff. I can't say it was
pleasant but I guess at the concentrations it's used the effect is quite
different. She said she got it at the "Apoteket" which as near as I can
guess is a pharmacy. It seems that Europeans can get saffron a lot
cheaper than we can. Now why the heck is that the case?

aromatic as it comes.

I buy it an ounce at a time from http://www.saffron.com/. Check the
site; it's full of information. The price has now risen to $80/oz.,
more than double what I paid 5 years ago when it came from Iran.

That's a good price. The Vita was 4.99 for 32 oz. I usually just get
a little jar because I'm the only one here who likes it. I find once
it's opened it gets mushy pretty quick.

The Polish place we like has barrels lined with plastic vats of kraut,
pickles, fish, ETC. I grabbed a few herring filets and it was good
but too salty to have more than one at a time. I went for another one
two days later and it was nasty. The texture had gone to shit.

The Vita I bought is in wine too and I think it lasts longer than the

I'll try to get some brine next time. I get my kraut there too but I
only get what I can eat in a day or so. I don't buy kraut in the
grocery store anymore. I always liked it but once I had the real deal
I don't like in from a bag or jar anymore.

I should have said fresh and not commercially packaged. I know little
about making it but from the little I've read if the temperature isn't
right during fermenting the texture and flavor suffer. All I know is
the stuff from the Polish place is much better than the name brands
like Franks and Vienna.

That's high. I've heard of lard being used but know nothing about the
