I was snapping some pics through the window of two broad-headed skinks
(lizards) on the patio. I shifted my gaze to the right and went WHOA!
Where did that Great Blue Heron come from?!

The bird stood at least 3 feet tall. They mostly eat fish, shrimp and
crab which are abundant in this area. But there isn't a pond nearby.
Maybe if it had noticed the skinks... because yes, they do also eat
small reptiles. I guess this one was just out for a stroll. :)

I'd think you'd prefer eating skanks.

Kuthe is an idiot. He couldn't get a skank to give him a second look.
He'd rather rave about his "brown" housemates than appreciate anything
in nature.

Here are the skinks:

It's entirely possible the Heron simply missed seeing the skinks. They
do eat small reptiles and even small rodents, although they prefer fish,
shrimp, crab and oysters. :)

I was thrilled! They're magnificent birds. This one was very tall. :)

LOL The whole story is someone's dog escaped (a very large golden
retriever) and went charging at the heron. It took flight PDQ! That
got the attention of the golfers approaching the green. The dog then
went bounding up onto the green and all four golfers were trying to
corral it. A woman came out from behind the house next door with a
leash and managed to snap it on the dog's collar. (I'm not even sure it
was her dog, I've only ever seen them with a small dog.) Thank goodness
the dog didn't get to the bird; that would have been horrific. :(

So would life be anywhere a dog got loose and killed a beautiful heron!

we have Sandhill Cranes here. They always surprise when they are a
mile or more away from the river or lake. It's startling to see one
standing on a house roof. I had a friend that had an elaborate pond
in her yard -- she'd spent days constructing the waterfall and nooks
and crannies. Of course she populated it with lots of yummy expensive
fish. Her house was at least 10 miles from a body of water. She
didn't know what was going on with losing her fish. Her pond was far
too deep for a cat to go fishing. She looked up one day and saw a
sandhill crane wading in her pond. Case closed.

Yep! Give them even a small pond with a food source and they'll find
it. They'll definitely eat those fancy Japanese goldfish or decorative
carp. Thanks for the food!

I think it's funny to see herons, cranes and ibis' perching in trees.
Always right around the ponds. :)
