What is salad cream?

This weekend's Financial Times has a tongue-in-cheek
article bemoaning the decline of `salad cream'. "Once
an essential ingredient of the UK government's shopping
basket, this mealtime gloop has slipped out of favor."
The article has a picture of a Heinz product: apparently
they are the main producer. What is this stuff? Salad
dressing, condiment, or something else??

Hi,salad cream is the english generic name for Miricle Whip (not
mayonaise)
seen this on the show Fawlty Towers!

Hmmm.... reminds me of Miracle Whip salad dressing which I
imagine winds up on sandwiches more than lettuce.

Is salad cream exactly the same as Miracle Whip or are there other
added ingredients? I've seen it at Marks & Spencers but alas they are
no more in N. Am. I really really really miss their shrimp cocktail
chips (or crisps).

The salad cream I remember is not like Miracle Whip.
It pours like a rather thick salad dressing and is more spicy
than mayonnaise. I don't know the ingredients - probably a
little mustard among others. It has a taste all its own,
difficult to describe. Good, though.
It's making me homesick.

Yes Marks and Sparks are gone. Too bad because their "junk food
section" was OK, but North American women weren't about to wear
the cruddy 1950's style undergarments that were being foisted off
on them.

No... Imagine a snappier, more poreable Miracle Whip that has more
vinegar and a touch of mustard, and perhaps not quite as sweet.

How nouveau-riche of them! Lots and lots of noble-born Englishwomen
wear Marks & Sparks' undergarments. The *really* aristocratic specimens
wear their husbands', of course. Those "North American women"...

I really regret the closure of M&S in Canada. Their pickled onions and
frozen sausages were to die for. So far I've been able to get by without
the ladies underwear (smirk). There's always Fredrick's of Hollywood if you
want a thrill.

Water, Spirit Vinegar, Vegetable Oil (18%), sugar, egg yolks (4%), mustard,
salt, cornflour....colours...stabilisers and preservatives......
