Chicken in the Slow Cooker, Sunday, 3/19/2023

We've had the discussion about chicken the last two days, wings and/or
breasts. I had stated I got boneless skinless breasts Friday for $1.99
per pound and I'd cook them in the crockpot.

Today I got up a bit early and pulled out my CrockPot brand slow cooker
and got everything in the crock and proceeded to put it on the back porch
to lazily do its' thing. I turn the crockpot on; nothing. Back in the house we
go and I try another plug; nothing. Just to satisfy my mind I plugged a small
lamp into the outside receptacle and it comes on with no problem.

I get the Ninja Foodi out as it has a slow cook function amongst other options.
Everything gets transferred into that pot and back to the porch I go. The pot
is doing its' thing as I write. Going to the CrockPot website and doing what
they say to 'trick' the pot to coming on is a bust. Now I'm mulling over
whether to buy another slow cooker or just let the Ninja be my only option.

What are you cooking this last day of winter??

That way, if you want to have two things pressure
cooking or slow cooking separately--like you could
use the Emeril to do rice or beans while the Ninja
is doing what it is busy doing... When my son
moved out, and took our extra multicooker, there
have been several times when I'd wished that I'd
had a second one, and the Emeril brand is only $89.
The only use I ever have for a crockpot is to keep
food warm for buffet style family dinners. We'll
probably use one or more of them this Easter.

working on kitchen cleanup, I couldn't stop. I
spent a couple of hours. Now, it's almost time to
get it greasy again. I have ground beef, and I'm

If I were to decide on another pressure cooker I'd just go with Ninja.
It has a browning lid too. I'm just bummed out why, for no reason,
my slow cooker has died on me.

The rare times I've cut my finger I'll wear one of those disposable
exam gloves on the injured hand. It does wonders keeping me from
hopping around the kitchen like a kangaroo holding that injured finger.

I have not bought or cooked wings in a few years, but my experience was
that if they came already cut into flats and drumettes the price for a
feed of wings would be higher than an equal feed from a batch of whole
wings. It costs them a certain amount per pound and since they can't
sell the tips they are going to increase the price per pound to cover
the cost of the tips. They will also charge extra for the labour.

Some people gladly pay more for the convenience.
I never had a problem prepping them myself. I would start off with
enough for one fryer load and then work on the next batch while those
were cooking.

I cooked up a corned beef in the slow cooker and then used the stock to make soup. I added some corn that was starting to get funky. After hours in the slow cooker it was still crispy. That was pretty cool.

yum. soup is what we're doing tonight with the broth left over from the
corned beef. will add cabbage, carrots and potatoes to it and have it with
kielbasa on the side.

We had finely sliced corned beef sandwiches. Now, it's over!

I hate the way they have set it up so that it is intrusive and keeps
trying to take over. Have you looked to see how it is running all the
time in the background, I assume saving details? I have CCleaner and
it is always bobbing up asking if I want to clean off MS Edge. There
doesn't seem to be any way to turn it off completely. Actions like
that make me stubborn :)

True enough, after David died in '98 I kept looking at the computer he
hadn't long purchased, a Commodore 64 and figured I should learn how

Bah. There's a GUI. You click on applications to open them. A
number of applications were pre-installed: open and edit Word
documents, Excel spreadsheets, images; play media; play games;
e-mail; browse the file system. Hundreds of applications to choose
from. A normal user would never have to touch the command line
nor compile any source code.

Get off your high horse. I have a desktop computer with a nice, big
monitor so I can read your effusions. I have a cell phone for making
calls, sending texts, and amusing myself when I'm waiting in line for
something. A screen the size of my hand is just annoying for any

We ate at a restaurant tonight. There was a guy going around selling balloon animals. My daughter scanned a QR code with her phone which gave a link to the guy's account that she paid through her phone. My guess is that we'll all be making payments like this within 5 years. Of course, your dinosaur of a computer can't even take a photo or fit into your pocket. That's pretty sad.

Agreed... I don't understand the pocket computer fad, unless it's an
emergency, or you want to use it as a GPS (although I have a separate
GPS). Touch-screen tiny keyboards are a PITA to use.

It's hardly a "fad" - I use my cell for banking/financial, shopping, summoning and tracking transportation, messaging, etc... (and I'm a relatively "light" user)...

So do hundreds of millions or even billions of others...

You need to "get out of the house" more...

You mentioned financial. My main bank is 1300 miles away but I can
deposit a check with my phone in about two minutes.

I was in the doctor's waiting room when a package was delivered to the
house that needed a signature. I was able to talk to the driver through
the Ring doorbell to take care of it.

Sure, some things are better done on a desktop or laptop, but my phone
is the most used tool I own.

Same here...

When we went remote at work and so no longer served clients in person, we used TEAMS or Zoom for staff/client meetings, and DocuSign for all the many documents our clients had to use - it works a charm, easy for even a novice over the phone, Many of our younger clients don't even have a computer, just a phone...

I thought, "Why have we been wasting all this time on travelling to meetings, filling out paperwork manually, etc...". It was a god - send for efficiency to get all this done remotely, and in the end greatly streamlined our workload...

I'm heavily involved in several neighborhood groups, we can meet remotely for those that cannot attend meetings in - person... I can speak at a City Council meeting from my armchair...

I use Zelle for money transfers - had lunch with a friend today, I put the tab on my card, and she sent her half via Zelle - click, click the money in my account in seconds. No more asking for split tabs, monkeying with cash, etc...

GOD but I love technology...

First thing is to configure a newsreader, that way I can " flush " tiresome turds like "Bruce" and "Dave Smith" with a kill file...


I still plan on working some, but at my pace and my pleasure - it might be real estate or career coaching or something of a "civic" nature. One of my neighborhood groups processes large amounts of FOIA information, they said they would pay nicely for me to deal with it...

I have the commodore disk drive (1541?) and still a box of those ancient
5 1/4 floppy disks. I never used it though.

All of my commodore work is stored on cassette tapes. There ya go for

There are several city commissions that use volunteers, I may consider those... there are
always vacancies... now I have the time do fulfill those duties...

At one city meeting, someone came up to me after I presented and said, "Wow you made your case
well and also demolished the opposition - were you trained by Perry Mason...???"
