Now that Verizon has purchased AOL there are big changes coming, with
loads of content like how AOL began. When AOL first arrived it cost ,
if I remember correctly, $24.95/mo. After a while AOL became free
but it eliminated all their great content, even my beloved Slingo
disappeared.

But now Gold will cost $4.99/mo.... first 30 days a free trial, anyone
who doesn't agree to the change will lose their AOL account in 30
days. I down loaded Gold yesterday, so far the only change I've
noticed is their desk top icon is vivid orange instead of blue.
Actually I didn't need to do anything, one of AOL's new techies
working from Romania did the entire installation and made sure
everything functioned correctly, took about 2 hours. Romanian
techies are a whole lot better than those from the Orient/India, they
only have a slight accent so are very easy to understand, and they
know their stuff. The young fellow, Vince, was 23 years old and an
engineering student studing Robotics... when not in school or working
part time for AOL he's a big time gamer.

I don't think there are many RFCers using AOL but I wonder what other
AOLers think about this... I have a few personal friends using
Verizon.net, that ISP is going to disappear and they will either use
AOL Gold or choose a different ISP.

Well, I'm not dropping fios, so my email has been migrated to
aol, though my address stays the same.

Only thing I've noticed so far is I'm getting come on emails
from friendly girls, been a long time since those types of
emails slipped through the filters.

Not too bad so far.

I hadn't realized you were using Verizon.net, I think the last and
only time I emailed you was when we were in the midst of the RFC
cookbook and you were the money collector.
So are you going to opt for AOL Desktop Gold, or?
I think it's a good deal for $5/mo... updates are supposed to occur
automatically and techy help is supposed to be available 24/7 for
free... I found those Rumanian techys very knowlegeable, efficient and
friendly.

I can't get fios here, not enough population to make it worthwhile to
Verizon. I have a high speed Verizon line but it's not fios.

The entire thing has been pretty much transparent to the user, so
to speak. Only thing was to be notified that Verizon would not longer
be my email provider, that AOL would be.

No, it's not super widely available even in dense areas. My brother
lives in a more populated area maybe 20 miles from me and he hasn't
heard of them planning to be available there. Takes time to install
the fiber optic cable and, you're right, they aren't going to do it for
a rural area.

I know the Verizon foreman in town and he says we will never get fios
in our lifetime, just not enough users here. Most people here are
seniors who are not interested in computers, and the few who are use
the computers at the library.

Same thing with AT&T. They farmed their email servers out to Yahoo
several years ago. Now Verizon has also bought Yahoo. As far as the
users though, everything is still AT&T in appearance. No changes to make
on the user end.

Same here. We've been with the same provider for so long that our

a discounted rate for it.

Bundling communications tools is stupid! I worked Comcast high speed internet 2nd level helpdesk job and if I had to reboot the calling customer's cable modem and they had called in with their Comcast phone service, the call would be disconnected upon my rebooting their modem! DUMB!!

I just searched the internet looking for a group, forum or blog of AOL Desktop GOLD users and found this site which is, strangely, supposed to be a cooking site. I was hoping to find a regular Google Group, one for AOL GOLD DESKTOP users that want to share problems and solutions. I'm using AOL GOLD DESKTOP but am not happy with the changes. I've tried AOL's tech support but connected to a rep that I could not understand and then got disconnected. I'd be willing to pay the monthly fee if I could resume using the old desktop. GOLD doesn't give me the email options I want...can't even get rid of the vertical blue line when replying, also can't insert horizontal lines, and many fonts are missing.

Welcome to the world of the internet where no search is guaranteed to be
exactly what you expected! This is a "cooking" newsgroup things tend to
be OT. If you're having a problem with AOL you really need to contact
them. This is not the technical "forum" you're looking for.

First of all, you ARE NOT going to loose your AOL account and Screen Name if you don't subscribe to AOL Desktop Gold. All it means is that you would have to start using a web browser either Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to log on to AOL's webmail site at https://mail.aol.com, and on AOL's main site at http://www.aol.com

Much in the same way that you use a web browser to log into Google Gmail that you're using now. However, if you want to still use AOL Desktop Gold without having to pay the $4.99 a month fee, you can always download and use the beta version of it. I've been an AOL beta tester for many years and this is what I use and NO, I don't pay for it either. Here are the links to download it:

NO! It had 4K RAM, not 4MB.

I almost bought the Timex Sinclair but luckily I spotted the
Vic-20 shortly after and bought that one. Much better computer
(and large keyboard). I bought a 16K Ram Expander Cartridge too.
I learned all about computers and how to program with that one.
With the help from Compute! magazines for years. It was a cool
basic computer. I still have it in original box too. Then I
upgraded to the C-64. Even better. I still have that in the
original box too.

Even though they are old (early 1980's) computers, not much value
even now as they flooded the market with those. I still treasure
mine though.
