We got a small bunch of bananas this week. They have tough cores. I bit
into the first one and was got off guard. It tasted quite normal but
there was a strange texture. I was able to break the banana and pull the
hard bit out. The rest of the fruit was fine. I have never seen this
sort of thing in bananas before. There were a half dozen bananas in the
hand. I just ate the 5th one and all of them so far have had this
strange core.

So very fascinating, Dave.

Did these tough banana cores cause your stools to become somewhat firmer?

They are probably plantains. Da Hawaiians use it to make pasteles and pastele stew. I can't find any around here. Beats me why that is.

"Interesting"...

They are regularly in stock at the local Target, Whole Foodz, Trader Joe's, Mariano's (Kroger - owned)... saw some at my
local small "college town" Target just yesterday when I picked up a prescription...

The local Valli Produce International Fresh Market has a number of varieties in stock, many Mexicans, Africans, and
Caribbean folk shop here:

http://www.valliproduce.com/

OH LOOK! Plantains are 99 cents per pound in their "Weekly Ad 6/21/2023 - 6/27/2023" - should I send you some, David...???

These were bananas. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the taste
of the outer parts but there was that core, about 1/3 of the fruit that
I could cut off and eat, or simply pull it away from that core. I have
been eating bananas all my life and have never seen this.

A canadian policeman, like officer dave may have never seen a
plantain.

A carribean policeman would know. A plantain can be cooked up,
and is much like a "sweet" potato. It is NOT a fucking banana.

In early August of 2016, I got lost in Fajardo, PR, after I left the
AirBnB to look for beer. Finally, after hours, I spotted a
Caribbean policeman, and asked for help. He was unable to
speak *any* English, but I remembered a flashing red light at
an intersection near the AirBnB that was the only one that I'd
seen. I had been able to communicate that I was lost, and
finally I said, "Rojo," while making a flashing gesture with my
hand.

He recognized what I was trying to get across, and suddenly
grinned and directed me to the intersection, from where I
could find my way back. That's my Caribbean policeman
story.

I didn't like Puerto Rican cuisine. Too many damned
plantains.

"By 1966, Jayne Mansfield had degenerated into alcoholism, drunken brawls, and performing at cheap burlesque shows. By
July 1966, she started living with her attorney, Sam Brody, who had frequent drunken brawls with her and mistreated her
eldest daughter, Jayne Marie. Sam's wife, Beverly Brody, filed for divorce, naming Mansfield the "41st other woman" in
Sam's life...

Jayne once visited the LA Farmer's Market with a friend. When Jayne took off her sunglasses to check some tomatoes, she
revealed a huge and painful - looking black eye. "Jayne! What happened!?", the friend exclaimed. "Sam beats me, and I love it!",
she replied to her shocked pal...

When visiting the North of England to perform in seedy working class "gentleman's clubs" at that time, Jayne wore micro - mini
skirts without hosiery, revealing numerous bruises on her legs...

Her wardrobe for these shows featured a gold mesh dress with sequins to cover her nipples and pubic region. That controversial
sheer dress was referred to as "Jayne Mansfield and a few sequins"...

One observer said, "When Jayne moved, the sequins moved - fully exposing nipples and pubic hair...". A filmed version of this
show was condemned by the Catholic Legion of Decency, and thus banned in the USA...

In San Francisco for the city's 1966 Film Festival, Mansfield and Brody visited the Church of Satan to meet Anton LaVey, the
church's founder. He awarded Mansfield a medallion and the title "High Priestess of San Francisco's Church of Satan". The
media enthusiastically covered the meeting and the events surrounding it, identifying her as a Satanist and romantically
involved with LaVey. That meeting remained a much-publicized and oft-quoted event both of her life and
of the history of the Church of Satan...

After the gruesome 1967 Lousiana car crash that killed both Jayne and Brody, LaVey went on the talk show circuit, claiming that
he had put a death curse on both of them after Jayne cut their affair short, and that he was responsible for the crash...

Two weeks before her mother's death in 1967, Jayne's 16-year-old Jayne Marie accused Sam Brody of beating her. The girl's
statement to officers of the Los Angeles Police Department the following morning implicated her mother in encouraging the
abuse, and days later a juvenile court judge awarded temporary custody of Jayne Marie to Paul's uncle William W. Pigue
and his wife Mary..."

Perhaps Bruce sees them under the name "cooking bananas".

They're starchy and often prepared fried. Apart from their use
in African, Caribbean, Central American, and northern South American
cuisines, "fried" can pick up a lot of fans.

Yelp even lists "top 10 best fried plantains in Ann Arbor". The
results are Cuban, Mexican, Jamaican, and African restaurants.

I ate the last of the weird bananas last night. My wife has picked up
another bunch and I am counting on them being normal.

I found the way to deal with the spined ones. I sliced it down the
middle and ran a spoon down along the core. The harder core popped out
and the rest of the fruit was delicious, just the way a banana should be.

This is the one and only time I have encountered this in bananas. Given

Plantains are a rare sight around here in any store. "Fresh" pineapples
are pretty gross by the time they get up here. They are either
under-ripe or already fermenting (sometimes both). I only buy them
canned fresh. I probably sound like Popeye, but it's true.

Maybe you should be looking in better stores or different seasons.
Learn to pick a good one. Pull on one of the centre leaves and it should
come out easily. Fresh pineapple, even a not so good one, is infinitely
better than canned. Canned is fine for Jell-O salads and pineapple
upside down cake, but fresh pineapple is always much tastier than canned.

Well, when you do try it, let me know. I can't get my paws on those things. Actually, there's not much reason for me to get my paws on plantains anyway. Da Hawaiians use them to make pasteles or pastele stew. I don't make pasteles. If I made pastele stew, I'd probably leave the plantains or green bananas out. It's delicious without it. Plantains seem like a big bother to use.

I can get mangoes in most stores here. Nice ripe ready to eat
mangoes.... not so much. Quite frankly, fresh mangoes are usually such a
crap shoot that I tend to grab bags if frozen mango. I know they will
not be as good as a nice fresh mango, but they are usually a damned
sight better than most of the mangoes we can get.

Now, you have to get the giant "nut" out of it. Mangoes are a scam!

Buy the bags of frozen mango. There are closer to nicely ripe than 95%
of the mangoes you buy fresh. There is no skin to peel and no pit. It's
actually much better value.

frozen stuff needed, except out of season maybe.

We have a store near me that has a machine to cut them. You choose the
pineapple you want, open door and place into machine, put a container in
the bottom.
Push button and it cuts off top and bottom, takes out the center core,
cuts away the outside, drops it into the container. Takes about 15
seconds.

Same as this one

That's a great idea, but I am assuming that if you choose the pineapple
and stick it in the machine you are obligated to buy the one you choose.
We have several stores around here that peel and core pineapples and
sell then in those plastic containers. It is nice to be able to see the
colour of the peeled fruit so you can choose one that is not too pale
and in need of ripening, or too yellow and over ripe.

Yeah, Dave, if you choose it and "stick it in," some obligations

famous fellow Canadian said, "Try to be sure right from the

"Canned Fresh" is a oxymoron.

Just look for the most yellow tints on pineapples. If not 1/5
yellowing nodules (usually towards the bottom), don't buy them.
Pulling on leaves never works for me. They've been dirt cheap
here more often than not and I'll pick one up when I see a good
one. I used some fresh PA last night for my burnt dinner.

They don't take any longer to get to Podunk, OH than they do to
Buffalo, Sacramento, or Austin.

Yes, very wasteful. Unless they're really cheap like $1.50/ea.
My last one was free.

I carve mine according to Fibbonaci - circular patterns, 8 spirals
diagonal. If you go the wrong direction there's 13 spirals - much
more work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo_nEBCKOUs

The same pattern is visible in many other fruits banana,
cantaloupe, cucumber, and flowers, especially.

Thats is a 100% ripe pineapple, BTW. All yellow. Can't get that
here.

How much are pineapples there? They run from $1.50 to $3.50 tops
here. $1 isn't unheard of, but only 2-3 times a year for a week
each maybe.

The waste is certainly a problem for me. I'm pretty anal about
carving my pineapples:

It's a love-hate relationship for me.

I'm not sure plantains taste much like bananas. AIUI, they're
bland and starchy. One of these days I'll order them in a restaurant
and find out.

That said, fried bananas are a pleasant dessert.

I used to make them when I did Indonesian food. Most of the recipes
on the web call for deep frying, but I pan fried them in butter or
coconut fat.

Fried Bananas

5 bananas, quartered
1 C flour
1/4 C cocnut milk
2 eggs
2 T sugar
1/2 t salt
butter
more sugar

Make batter of flour, coconut milk, eggs, 2 T sugar, salt, and 2 pieces
of banana, mashed. Dip remaining banana pieces in batter and fry in
butter until brown. Sprinkle with extra sugar.

I can't recall where this recipe came from. Probably an Indonesian
cookbook that I checked out from the library.

I've read all this thread. Interesting and odd.
Personally, if I bought a bunch of bananas that
had a hard boner core in the center, I'd toss them
and go buy some normal bananas.

Bananas are dirt cheap, no big monetary loss.

Dave Smith

No one is crying the blues over bananas. Other than that off putting
texture, they were edible. I simply trimmed off the good parts and
discarded that core. When I got to the last one I cut it in half and
used a spoon to scoop out that tough spine. We only buy a few bananas
at a time so that they will be nicely ripened in time to eat and don't
end up as banana bread.

I posted about these tough cored bananas only because it was completely
new to me. I had never seen anything like it and thought maybe someone
else here had or know what it was about. I just had the first of the new
bunch of bananas and it was quite normal.

it sounds good but much more than i usually want to do
for a dessert.

my typical banana dessert is either straight up or
with peanut butter. once in a while if i want different
i'll put some honey, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice
on them with a bit of cinamon. since i never measure
the amounts it is pretty much "adjust to taste if you
really care" - i don't normally have to because i like
it about any way it comes out.

I don't think the local affluence is the big factor. Local stores do
carry a wide range of products. Availability of plantain tends to depend
more on ethnic demographics. It is much easier to find in areas with
larger black populations. The black population in Canada is mostly
Caribbean and they use a lot of plantain.

It's easier than baking a cake or pie. A lot of people don't consider
that a lot of work. I suppose the fact that it can't be done in advance
might make it a little more complex at dinnertime.

Dusted with cinnamon and brown sugar and grilled also works pretty
good. You can also broil or roast instead of grill.

Tropical fruits make great sauces for savory (and sweet) foods.

But green papaya and rambutan is probably more your speed.

Michael, I'd bet that everyone here's area is wealthier than yours.

Maybe so... I'd like to argue that we don't know what part of NY/NYC The
Bowser lives in... it might be pretty rough. I'm not worried about
getting shot or robbed where I live, and that's just good enough for me.

I sold that house for $6,500 last week. I just bought another this
morning at tax sale for $2,400... Lol. To be fair, the mean price of
homes is quite a bit higher than I pay (which would be the absolute
cheapest that I can find).

Good for you, hope it was profitable.

I think most people here would be afraid to try your lifestyle but you
make it work. As long as you are happy and take care of Sophia, nothing
else matters.

Thanks, Ed. I paid in the ball-park of $4,100 for it a month and a half
ago. I didn't value the couple hundred that I put into a few supplies
(and a stolen circular saw) or the hours of my time filling a
dumpster... but either way, I certainly didn't consider it a loss.

If I can double my money on this next one in a couple of months, I'm
going to seriously consider continuing to buy sub-$5k tax sale homes,
then quickly clean and flip them... Although I'm afraid to see what the
tax implications will be next year. It should be interesting.

Alternatively, I'm hoping that one of these cheap houses will be decent
enough to get Sophia, her mother and co. out of the income-assisted dump
where they are living; If she'll pay the utilities and taxes. It's
well worth the few thousand I'd have to pay to make that happen.

Not only that, but is your ex (or maybe your daughter)
savvy enough to maintain a house?

Of course, you would likely visit once in a while
to keep an eye on it, but some things (ants, termites)
can do a lot of damage relatively quickly.

How do you know songbird has an ex and/or a daughter?

What is a "co?" Are you talking about a current boyfriend or husband?
Of course, it's none of my business but, I can't figure that one out.

You might want to replace the electricity before you put your daughter
in a $4,000 house.
