I’m not a big believer in superstition, but for some reason I’ve always
eaten black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. I figure starting the new year
by indulging in a juicy superstition can’t hurt.

Hoppin’ John is a basic, simple black-eyed pea stew. I kept it extremely
pared down, and when I made it yesterday I had a hard time not adding
bright red bell pepper, big pieces of torn kale, and canned diced
tomatoes. All of these are acceptable, of course, but I wanted to keep
it basic and unadorned. There’s beauty in simplicity sometimes.

Also, I was lazy.

All this time I thought Hoppin John was black eyed peas mixed into the
rice, served not on top.

She does say that is another way to do it. It looks good.

It's a fine dish and a ham hock will make anything better!

Happy New Year!

Whatever negative things I've thought/said about Ms. Drummond, she
more than makes up for any other deficits with her chocolate cake
recipe (cake only, not the filling).

My wife used that recipe, but made a better chocolate filling, and
whipped cream with jarred Morello cherries we stocked up on when ALDI
had them a few months ago. Nutella is pretty crappy, but the rest of
the recipe is first rate otherwise, and substituting the cherries for
the fresh strawberries mean that the cake will last longer in the
fridge, as strawberries go bad rather quickly.

Since the dish is originally from the Carolina low country, I'm not
betting that pioneer rancher is the last word. You might take a look
at Kenji Alt's take on what Hoppin' John was and became for
comparison.

I read the Serious Eats article by Robert Moss earlier today and it
corroborated my first impression of Hoppin John. Believe it or not, I
have some Carolina Gold rice and I understand the method - in fact
that's the method I like best for cooking small amounts of rice for
the two of us.

No, John. My wife having substituted cherries for strawberries in the PW's
cake recipe is not *me* trying to "emulate" your chocolate covered cherries.

I don't doubt the excellence of your 2015 batch. I have even suggested that
folks might want to buy them if you have them to sell.
