I see they bill it as "Missouri Slow Cured" ham. They are in Pacific, MO,
which is near St. Louis. So I wrote them to see if it's available here in
Kansas City. The Missouri Kansas City, that is. ;-) I'll give it a try if I
can get some. Hopefully I can get some nice individually wrapped ham steaks.

It's gotta be better than the Gusto brand they sell at RD, which is pretty
typical of the solution-added hams. Still, I like it better than the Frick's
or store brand ham steaks sold at Price Chopper and the price is much
better. So much moisture is driven out of the solution added ham steaks that
it's almost impossible to get any browning on them before they start
basically boiling in their own juices. That being said, letting the pan cook
nearly dry and deglazing it can make some nice ham or red-eye gravy to go
with the now dried-out ham.

MO doesn't stump me because of some song/poem that rhymed Joe and
KC,MO. [Marty might be able to prod my memory-- I think the MO
designation predates the Post office messing with things.]

Michigan and Mississippi gives me pause when all I have is MI.

I'd vote for that-

Missouri does have some good smokers! I had the best bacon I'd ever
eaten at an auspicious diner/gift shop in mid-south MO once at their
breakfast buffet. And when I went back some time later expecting to
get the same "best I'd ever had" bacon I was sorely disappointed. I
asked the staff about and the lady told me that they get their meats
from different local meat packers so she couldn't tell me which one
had cured that best ever bacon, of course.

But I know they are out there!! :-)

So if we combined Michigan and Mississippi, would the abbreviation be MSG?

I lived practically across the street from a small shop like that
in Brookline, Mass. It was small, but they carried the most
wonderful products. Heck, I haven't been back there for a while.
Just as I was moving, after my mom was diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer, the owner of that store was also diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer. :-( The store has stayed open, and it has even expanded.
I don't think it is QUITE as good as it was, but maybe it's time
to take another look.

Here's the reply:

Marty,
Thanks for your inquiry.
Your in luck. Every Hy-Vee store in your area should carry our product.
If you don't see it in the smoked meat case, talk to the market manager.
If you have any trouble, please feel free to contact us again.
Thanks!

Going to the grocery store tomorrow morning early for my traditional weekly
grocery store trip. I've got Double-G on my list to check out. I trust your
opinions, Mr.Gourmet Sandwich Head. :)
