Hi KenK,
I've had a dog and several cats. My daughter came back home to live with me
for a year when she was age 25. She had 2 ferrets then. I told her then
that she was always welcome to come home but I wasn't thrilled about her
bringing ferrets here. I knew nothing about them at the time.
She moved back in and I got to know ferrets. As it turned out, I started
taking care of them better than she was. When she moved out 14 months later,
she couldn't take them and was going to try to find a home for them. I told
her...."NO WAY! They are my kids now. They stay here."
They are the coolest pets (and little furry friends) that I've ever had.
They act like young puppy dogs. They always want to play with you no matter
how old they get.
You can litter train them as I've done. Actually, THEY pick the places where
they want to go to the bathroom and you follow through by putting papers
down in those areas. Once that is established, they do good. An occasional
accident happens, but it's rare.
I keep them in their cage (and do get a large one) when I am not at
home....only because they can get into mischief when out all day. Once I
get home, I let them out. They will explore the entire house for awhile but
eventually will run back to me to play.
Are they affectionate? If you treat them right, they are the most loving
and affectionate creatures I've ever had.
Can they bite you? They could bite the crap out of you if they wanted
to....but just like a dog or cat can do the same. They love you and won't
do that. They do love to play bite though just like dogs and cats.
Do ferrets smell? So very faintly you don't notice unless you put their
faces right next to your nose. (they are related to skunks) I like the
faint smell. It's musky but not offensive.
I recommend that if you consider buying a ferret, definitely consider buying
2 of them. They definitely do good with a mate. Once you watch two close
ferret friends sleeping or playing together, you would understand why it's
better to have two.
Do some reading about ferrets before you buy some. They are so cute that
many people buy them right up...then realize how high-maintenance they
are...then put them up for adoption.
Ferrets don't just want to get out of their cage each day. They want to
play with YOU! They are very people-oriented creatures. If you buy some,
you need to be available to them much more time than a cat.
Can you guess I could go on and on? geez!
Any more questions, you can write me on regular email.
