DH was volunteering at the Humane Society Wednesday. I was standing in
line at the supermarket checkout when my phone rang.

"Do you want another kitten", he asked
"How old". I responded
"About 4 weeks"

I am now foster mom to another little fellow. We have named him "Trey"
as he is the third little one in the line of foster kittens. He is
doing well and has gained over an ounce since we got him. I make good
kitten swill, I guess. He was just under a pound when we got him.

He's very affectionate and vocal. We'll have him about 3 or 4 weeks
then he'll go to the shelter for adoption.

Aw...you are the bestest most soft hearted person on this board.
Kudos to you. I'd love to see pictures of the little guy.

Oh what a handsome little guy he is! I would have a terrible time
giving up all those little kitties to someone else.

GOOD FOR YOU!!!!

What a cutie in your picture. Wish I could adopt him or one like him, but
my two cats hate other cats too much :-(

He's adorable! I would have a terrible time giving up a cutie-pie like
this. But I applaud people who do foster care.

Kitten number one was adopted by a friend. At 7 months, he's huge.
Kitten number 2 is beloved by a teenage girl and doing just fine.

We travel a lot, either overseas on cruises or in our little RV. We have
a swap sitting arrangement with our neighbor for our dogs. Cats don't
enter in the bargain. Also, it's quite impossible to travel in a 23'
motorhome with a cat. They need too much equipment. I'm still finding
bits of kitty litter from kitten number one traveling with us last year.
I'm too much of a princess to keep a litter box in my shower :-)

DH volunteers at the Humane Society, and his job is to call adoptive
parents to make appointments to neuter the animals. You know he's gonna
check up on the kittens.

Awwww. How do you not end up with many cats (not as fosters)?

It's not easy, but as I responded to another post, we are not going to
be good cat parents with all our traveling. If I can save these darling
babies, I think I've done enough. I do miss them when I give them up
but they have wonderful homes with people who love them and can take
care of them better than I.

I wouldn't. The kitten stage appeals to me a lot more than the cat
stage. I think a continuous stream of foster kittens might be the
ideal way to live with cats.

But I write to say I find this kitten thread quite disturbing, located
as it is between the chocolate pudding thread and the angel food
thread. Please do not cook or eat your kitties, if for no other
reason, that the hair might get stuck in your throat.

A teaspoon of oil once a week should prevent the hairballs. ;)

I would have a very hard time fostering any animal. In that time, I would
get so attached that I wouldn't want to give them up. This is why I have
ferrets now.

Hi KenK,

I've had a dog and several cats. My daughter came back home to live with me
for a year when she was age 25. She had 2 ferrets then. I told her then
that she was always welcome to come home but I wasn't thrilled about her
bringing ferrets here. I knew nothing about them at the time.

She moved back in and I got to know ferrets. As it turned out, I started
taking care of them better than she was. When she moved out 14 months later,
she couldn't take them and was going to try to find a home for them. I told
her...."NO WAY! They are my kids now. They stay here."

They are the coolest pets (and little furry friends) that I've ever had.
They act like young puppy dogs. They always want to play with you no matter
how old they get.

You can litter train them as I've done. Actually, THEY pick the places where
they want to go to the bathroom and you follow through by putting papers
down in those areas. Once that is established, they do good. An occasional
accident happens, but it's rare.

I keep them in their cage (and do get a large one) when I am not at
home....only because they can get into mischief when out all day. Once I
get home, I let them out. They will explore the entire house for awhile but
eventually will run back to me to play.

Are they affectionate? If you treat them right, they are the most loving
and affectionate creatures I've ever had.

Can they bite you? They could bite the crap out of you if they wanted
to....but just like a dog or cat can do the same. They love you and won't
do that. They do love to play bite though just like dogs and cats.

Do ferrets smell? So very faintly you don't notice unless you put their
faces right next to your nose. (they are related to skunks) I like the
faint smell. It's musky but not offensive.

I recommend that if you consider buying a ferret, definitely consider buying
2 of them. They definitely do good with a mate. Once you watch two close
ferret friends sleeping or playing together, you would understand why it's
better to have two.

Do some reading about ferrets before you buy some. They are so cute that
many people buy them right up...then realize how high-maintenance they
are...then put them up for adoption.

Ferrets don't just want to get out of their cage each day. They want to
play with YOU! They are very people-oriented creatures. If you buy some,
you need to be available to them much more time than a cat.

Can you guess I could go on and on? geez!

Any more questions, you can write me on regular email.

Not at all likely. We named him "Trey" because he's the third little
boy cat we are fostering.

I actually prefer cats. The only advantage to having a kitten is
that you know about its background. It is easier to assess the
personality of cats. I gravitate toward those who are shy and scared.

But still, if that kitten was being fostered near me, I think I'd
be in BIG trouble. It is very appealing.

We've two rescues that think they're still kittens at 8 and 6 yrs
respectively. They follow us everywhere and are great company.

Good for you! Many points for Heaven entry after you die.
Rescuing animals are the way to go.
I've "rescued" one cat (long ago) and 2 ferrets (more recently).

In my case, the only sad thing is imagining their past life before they
found a loving home with me.

If you care about animal welfare it's time to start thinking about how
your eggs are produced.

If I totally cared about animal welfare, Janet, I would become a vegetarian.
