Of course they ran. They had no idea it was a pet and rats carry all

Not Rats in captivity!

I used to have rats as Pets AND Boa Food! Very nice, friendly, curious animals! I NEVER feared reaching my hand into a tankful of rats at the place I used to buy them for Boa Food! They are very curious creatures!

Some people are terrified of rats and mice. My mother would have
freaked. She had qualms about coming into our house when I had pet
(white) rats. If I had been there I probably would have picked him up.
While I was at university I looked after the animals in the psychology
lab. We went through thousands of rats, using them for training and for
neurological studies. We occasionally had more rats that we could
accommodate and I would take some home for pets or give them to friends.
They make great pets. They are smart and very friendly.

Of course, a rat that just came out of a sewer is a different story.
Here, we have plenty of bush rats. They're no different and no dirtier
than other rodents. The only problem is that they procreate like it's
going out of fashion.

Wouldn't wild and/or sewer rats be more likely to have plague-carrying fleas? Or the
Hanta virus? If I ever saw one of those, I would stay far, far away. The pet ones may
be very smart and enjoyable, but I think they are creepy. I don't scream or run or have
any extreme reaction; I just don't want them to be where I am.

I love cats and dogs; just not rodents so much.

I've seen bush rats close to death with a respiratory disease. I
forgot the name. I'd never touch those. Bats can carry the lyssavirus
that's hard to catch, but if you do, you die. Don't touch those either
unless you've had the shot. I've seen rabbits with myxomatosis.

I don't know if non-city rats are worse than other animals.

It is a strange reaction. We were at the circus once and an elephant went on the rampage. There was a little panic but not to the degree as in the video. Everybody, went up the seats but I always like to do the opposite of what others do. I went down and towards the door. This was actually a bad move because the elephant had the same idea. Luckily someone stopped me from going out the door otherwise, my little boy and I would have met the crazy elephant face to face. Perhaps that guy that stopped me was an angel sent down from heaven. :)

You used to live in India. My guess is that you saw reports of elephants killing people and then getting killed. That's pretty much what happened in Honolulu. I think white rats are cute and wild rats are interesting, not scary. Elephants? I don't trust 'em.

Boy that's for sure! You also don't expect to see a guy shooting an elephant on TV. Also strange was that the guy was using an archaic Winchester repeating rifle to kill the beast. The whole scene traumatized the state. The worst thing was that it must have taken a while to kill the elephant. It's a horrible thing to kill an animal by repeatedly shooting it. The job took 86 bullets.
