A friend is interested in making some Matza Farfel cookies but initial searches
for farfel or meal are less than encouraging. Probably do better near Passover.
We've searched at the most recommended supermarket but with less than satisfying
results...tried one ethnic food store but that didn't work either. We'll
continue looking at other ethnic stores, but in the meantime can anyone suggest
an acceptable substitute?

If you can buy a plain box of matzo, meal and farfel are easy to make.
I buy matzo at Passover (much less expensive then, at least in NYC), I
typically buy two five pound packs of one pound boxes. For farfel I
run some through my meat grinder using the 1/2" plate. For matzo meal
I run some through my meat grinder using the 3/16" plate. I make the
farfel first, the small crumbs go into the meal. I use about a box of
matzo each month, for many foods I prefer it to bread; tuna salad, egg
salad, PB n'J, etc. I don't like pancakes but I do like matzo brei.
