I've seen photos of your house. You live in suburbia.

John, would you please do me a favour and take some meth and acid at
the same time? Then post again here once the effects kick in. I'd like

Surrounding most cities in the U.S. is a ring of smaller towns constructed
in the first half of the 20th Century (or the late 19th Century). They
expanded to the borders of the larger city, but most retain a central
business district. They are almost indistinguishable from the adjacent
properties within the city limits. These are first-tier suburbs, which
is what John lives in.

I grew up in a second-tier suburb, built just after WW II.
Later suburbs often lack a business district. The area where I grew up
is platted into a grid of main roads every mile. For second-tier and
later suburbs, businesses cluster along these main roads while houses
are on smaller side streets laid out (first in a grid, and then in
curves and cul-de-sacs) between the main roads.

I don't consider a 5-minute drive to an airport to be a good thing. I
once lived a 10-minute drive from a cargo airport and it was plenty
noisy. A 30-minute drive to DTW is just about right.

How do you reason that out? Most all humans in industrial areas burn LOTS of petroleum!

ALL of us who live in RICH nations burn petroleum ALL THE TIME!! Which is one chagrins Greta Thunberg so badly!

And ME TOO! She was and like me could probably be diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome! But as Greta said, I think WE are the "normal" ones who just cut out all the UNimportant HUMAN DRAMA CRAP and stick with ONLY the IMPORTANT STUFF!

You could reduce your petroleum usage by foregoing things such as

It might depend on the life you lead and ambient noise. Aircraft are a
lot quieter than they used to be. If you travel a lot, proximity to an
airport would be handy. If you live in an air conditioned apartment you
may never hear the aircraft. When we visited with our niece who was
living in Tallinn Estonia their house was less than 10 minutes from the
airport and noise was not a problem.

When I stayed in a resort hotel in Newport Beach we were about 8 miles
from the airport and right on the flight path for planes taking off. We
could not hear them when we were inside and they were not particularly
overwhelming outside. That is a lot different from when I was a kid. We
lived about 20 miles from the Malton airport, now Pearson International.
We could hear the planes taking off. We would hear planes pretty much
all day long. Those old airplanes could be heard for miles and miles.
These days I look up and see jet planes going past and I don't hear a
thing.

I think airports and passenger jets should be shunned and avoided
anyway. All you ever see on the news is thousands of people
stranded for days in airports. And the planes don't even serve
good meals now either.

And traveling across the country just to spend a few holidays
with family or whatever. Idiots. And especially idiots because so
many of them miss the family and spend the holiday sleeping on
the floor in an airport. LOL

I was in the locker room at the Y a couple years ago when one of the
guys was talking about having just returned from a wedding in Vancouver.
One of the younger guys started hassling him about the waste of fuel
to fly all the way out there for a wedding. The old guy said that they
didn't go just for the wedding, that they had stayed out there for a
couple weeks. The younger guy was such a hypocrite. I had noted some
oddities about him and his lack of eco awareness. First of all, he is
single and drives a big car. He drives his car to the gym even though
he lives about 1/2 mile away. They have free towels in the men's locker
room and the guy uses 3-4 towels when he showers. He showers for 10
minutes or more, and when he is all done he uses the free aerosol
deodorant on his entire body. I would not be surprised if he used more
than half a can of the stuff after each shower.

His hypocrisy ranks up there with Kuthe's.

My guess is that the passenger planes of the future will not be burning jet fuel. They will be electric and very clean and economical to run.

I am of the age that anything over 300 miles I will fly there. Gone are the

Agreed. I'm 20 minutes or 16 miles from FLL and it's usually quiet
until the winds change direction and the planes all have to land from
the west. It's not noticeable indoors but outside we can see and hear
them making the hard turn to the east.

That's way off. Batteries are heavy. Jet fuel is also heavy but as it
burns the aircraft gets lighter and more efficient.

I'm sure all of the dead lithium batteries that are tossed in the trash
are not very good for the environment either. I'll take global warming
over the loss of fresh, clean, water.

300 miles is closer to 5 hours, however I agree with you on that
number. A 300 mile flight takes just over an hour. Add the travel time
to the airport and the time in security, boarding, deplaning, etc. and
you are looking at about four hours on a good day. If you have to rent
a car at your destination you are better off driving. If you don't, then
flying is the way to go.

M-a-n-y years ago b/f and I flew, non-stop, to Las Vegas and it was a 4 hour
flight. Five days and four nights on the strip with a rental car was $500 a piece. We'd made that trip twice before, once in a motorhome and once in a car.
That was a 2 1/2 day trip, one way, and some sort of vehicle trouble both times.
GRRRRRRRRRR

Not a clue what that flight, hotel, and rental car would cost now but it was
money WELL spent that time.

If it is one person travelling 300 miles there may not be much time
saved. If two people are travelling the same distance there is no
significant extract cost for fuel when going by car, but if by air you
are looking at double the air fare.
