Don't worry, it will look better as soon as it's covered in verdigris.

Curious to know what that is on the mains supply cable?

Some jokester could put that pic on Craigslist, saying, "FREE copper...come and GET it...!!!" at John's address...

It just to keep tension. One is just a steel cable at the top, and
the live wire hangs off of it with some slack so the so it doesn't
get stressed in the wind.

Looks like he had ivy growing through his at one time. It also
looks like that was an added telephone line that is no longer
connected - not a power cable. The active or original phone line
goes up into the soffit. His power main is down on the left of your
circle.

Notice the birdshit *under* the soffit in 4 places. The two most
obvious skidmarks are from a bird hanging out on the defunct
telephone line. Another one was hanging out on the main fixture.
And another, somehow, on the A/C line.

Sharp eye, there Squertz! That IS the old non connected anymore Southwestern Bell telephone wire, and the cable emerging from the soffit was an old satellite dish connection. And that's not ivy, that's some of the last remnants of a severe pernicious vine infestation I had parted out in 2016/2017.

The phone line is (was) wrapped around the tension wire. Seeing how
the tension wire isn't used anymore, I'd unscrew it from the house
and drag it over the poled and cut out off. Less visual pollution.
And less wire for the birds to hang out upon.

Many of the wires running between poles aren't even used anymore.
Vietnam, especially, is infamous for this:

get things done quicker and easier, because they're not weighed down
by too many rules and regs.

When we decided to get Internet in our home, it was 3PM in the
afternoon. 3 hours later, all set up, installed and working. 300Mbps,
Including wall mounting our TV with hundreds of channels, wifi, plus a
4G sim card for a phone. AUD$40 per month.

for Internet we have one 1/2" cable running the length of our
neighborhood. It's micro-trenched into the pavement of the road and
sealed with a silicone compound. Several branches come off of that
for the side streets, and then off of that they branch into the curb
the same way and do a little micro-trenching of your yard to buy a 2
1/16" wires up to the side of the house.

Other than some lines on the side of the street near the curbs and
1/8" slits into the concrete curbs, you can't see anything for the
1,000+ homes. It sure as hell beats 1,000+ wires running overhead
for each individual house. We have No overhead wires for anything.

I like the rules and regulations. And it sure as hell makes
installations easier than running cables thousands of feet every
time somebody wants something hooked up.

Out here in the ex-urbs, the power lines run on poles overhead. I
imagine the phone lines used to, but they were buried before we bought
the house in 2000. Cable runs on the power poles. Our cable drop used
to be overhead, but we had Comcast bury the line from the pole to our
house. We're thinking of having the power line buried, too, since
it runs through some trees and the insulation is rubbing off where
it contacts the bark.

It would cost the electric utility billions to bury the power feeders,
and we'd all end up paying for it. I don't think they'll bury those in
my lifetime.

We've had Netflix for quite a while, and we stream from that and from
Amazon Prime Video. I just can't get him off the cable lineup.

Maybe I should subscribe to Hulu or something out of my allowance and
try to get him to use that.

Something's gotta give when American Gods comes back. Comcast dropped
its channel from our package, so we're going to have to find some way
to stream it anyhow. Or wait until it comes out on DVD.

What? We each get some money to spend as we please. Because we're not

There was no sell. Twice the channels at half the price of cable, and
much better reception. DISH is fantastic. We don't see that 18" dish
unless we look for it, it's some 3' above ground level on a metal
post. No wires other than a short wire coming indoors from the
dish... all comes via satalite. About every two hours the TV
reception stops and a message pops up to press any key to continue
watching TV... likely to keep the system from becoming clogged
unnessasarily. They also have special channel packages if you want
all sports or X-Rated. The basic channels serve us well, we get all
the regular shows and we like the animal, nature, and gardening
shows... we get about a half dozen cooking channels, some I find
boring. One of our favorites was Naked And Afraid.

I used to have Shaw Satellite and switch to Bell when I had a really
great offer to upgrade to high speed internet bundled with telephone and
satellite. The offerings are basic, better and best. I opted for best so
I get all their channels, but I often find there is nothing at all of
interest. I know there is a lot of good stuff to be streamed, and it is
cheap enough that I can subscribe to several for what I am paying beyond
the basic satellite.

Specialty channels are a waste of time. Food Network is way to many
reality show type contests, way too much Guy Fieri and little worth
watching. Close to 90% of the Comedy Network is Big Bang Theory reruns.

I've tried all the online + live TV streaming services and I
generally hate them all. Mostly because of the lack of non-native
interfaces and full function remotes.

At least Pluto TV is free and it's integrated into the Vizio TV. So
all the controls on the remote work (generally).

But I generally hate the Vizio TV, too. I only have it because I
won it in a plasma donation raffle and needed to swap in my higher-
res TV as a computer monitor temporarily (that's since been replaced
with a dedicated 28" monitor). But I kinda got attached to the
Pluto TV feature. Otherwise, I'd still ecstatic throwing it off the
3 story roof and watching it shatter into a zillion pieces.

Whatever series it is, assuming it's good, you can download it from
torrents within hours of its broadcast. I watch that stuff on my TV
with the native remote from the USB port on a thumb drive. I'm doing
season 3 of Ray Donovan (and then I have 3 more seasons to binge
on). While everybody waits for a new season, I'm watching brand new
episodes every night!

Uhh, it doesn't work that way. That's like turning off the AM/FM
radio to save the radio company some transmission costs and allow
them to serve more people.

You should have gotten the X-Rated channels. You're just gonna blow
even more on the individual pay-per-view fees.

I don't think there is torrent software for Unix.

I've known 3 local people that switched from cable to Dish and
the same initial reaction like you have. So wonderful!

At first they raved about it.
Then they stopped talking about it.
Within 4 months or so, it sucked and they switched back
to cable.

Main complaint is that it wasn't reliable. Reception is
bad during stormy weather.

So I'm curious how you'll feel after a few months.

Does anyone else here on RFC have Dish TV?
Do you have problems with it?

Perhaps a good solution is to go ahead and add the internet
streaming and keep the cable too. Have both for a few
months.

Let him (and you) see what streaming does for him before he gives
up the cable.

New things are always new but not necessarily better.
Sometimes the best way is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

It might be a 'fight piracy' issue of some fashion.
Never heard of that feature though. Sounds annoying.

I thought Naked and Afraid might be good but it's pretty much
a fail to me. The naked part is annoying. Women's boobies are
always blurred. You must like seeing men's butts. ;)
I realize that the concept was that you have no protection
on your body from the elements but simple bathing suits would
have worked just as well. Speedo's for men and bikini's for the
women.

I thought that the History Channel survival show, "Alone" might
be good but they always pick unstable people for contestants.
Many literally lose it mentally after so many days.

I cut the cable several years ago, greedy buggers made the basic
package cheapest but it was full of sports channels I never watched
and every so often, price went up.

So I cut that and stream either chromecast or firestick and have a
huge variety of what I want. I also recently downloaded on firestick,
Beast TV and that has A&E, news from CNN, ABC etc etc plus PBS, I
think some 170 channels all told. True it is C$15 per month but that
is peanuts compared to cable. Will check my usage of those channels
and if it's not worth $15 will cut it. What I do get on it is BBC
World News which cable charged me $10 a month for, so I figure I am
still well ahead.

The only cooking show I'll watch these days is Guy's Triple D, it's a
good travelogue and some of the female restaurant owners are HOT. I
like that the shows move along fast, each half hour episode features

their burgers are home ground, no mystery meat.

Streaming services do that to save bandwidth, "Are you Still
Watching?". But satellite doesn't work that way. All the channels
are being broadcast/beamed down at the same time regardless if
anybody is watching or not - same as broadcast/OTA TV and radio. No
less than 5,000 channels of live TV and radio are being picked up by
our skulls at any given moment, not to mention thousands of phone
conversations and text messages.

The only time that would matter is if you're doing On-Demand type
streaming, through the satellite system. In Pussy Katz's case, its
just a power-saver feature of some sort, probably in his TV rather
than in the satellite hardware. He didn't notice it before because
his cable box kept his TV alive - and satellite boxes connected VIA
HDMI generally don't do that.

He can have his wife turn off that feature since it's too technical
for him.

when I lose a signal.

Virginia Beach, "Beach Pub." It's only a 5 minute walk from

If only they could teach Guy some basic table manners. One might expect
that a trained chef would be able to use a fork properly and not have to
use his fingers to push food onto it, and then to have to hold one hand

to unhinge his jaw like a snake to get huge bite. It grosses me out.

So far no outages with Dish... ocasionally we have to wait for an
update but takes less than 5 minutes, and at least it says Wait For
Update. With cable very often there was no service and they don't
answer their phones from 7 PM till 8 AM and no help on weekends...
cable works bankers hours... and they fake knowing anything. So far
Dish is a Zillion times better. So far I've had no outages, only
short updates and those take place in the wee hours.

Well, going back before I had broadband Internet, books. Strictly all
non-fiction titles, apart from Hunter S. Thompson. I basically lost
interest in TV in my late teens. And VHS/DVDs.

Oh... one exception was I did record the Simpsons back then (when they
were still actually satirical and clever).

Once I had cable Internet in 2000, I downloaded video from Usenet
binary groups and IRC. Some of the IRC channels were very good back
then, people would share TV content merely minutes after it aired in
say, the U.S. I was and still am interested mostly in documentaries.
Later, bittorrent of course. And now, various other ways.

The idea of waiting/sitting down at a certain day/time to watch
something (usually with commercials) is quite simply a NO for me. I
can't do it.

I'm not concerned at all.

Firstly, there is essentially nothing of interest to me that is
accessible from Australian media, so no copyright holder is losing
anything.

Secondly, in the cases where I really like something copyrighted and
wish to see/hear it multiple times , I'll buy it (usually CDs or DVDs
or occasionally downloadable)

Thirdly, a lot of the material I'm interested in these days can be
legally streamed for free - I just download it for later viewing and
delete it.

Fourthly, in the case of major media outlets, I honestly couldn't care
about them or their 'intellectual property'

Fifthly (?) your comparison with software copyright is a different
situation, IMO. It is designed for commercial use and requires
