Since we get our liability insurance (necessary to rent certain halls)
through a regional western square dance group, we get lots of other
stuff from this group. In several pieces of correspondence, the writer
has mentioned a yellow rock as some object to be desired and/or
awarded.

Now don't get me wrong: I think of western square dancing as the
"alternative universe" to contra dancing, different in process and in
its sociology, but quite similar. And anything that gets people away
from the TV set and into a community activity is cool. But what the
heck is a yellow rock and what is its meaning?

"Yellow rock" is WSD for "hug." So far as I know, the call "yellow
rock" is not on any CallerLab list. Nonetheless it is in use at some
clubs, and the dancers there seem generally to regard its meaning as a
gesture of friendly affection or harmless flirtation. At other clubs,
a call of "face your corner; yellow rock" by a visiting caller might
provoke thoughts along the lines of "where does this caller get off
telling somebody that they can hug me?" or "where does this caller get
off telling somebody that they can hug my spouse?").

Also be advised that that ther is also a 'Red Rock', 'Green Rock', and

Origanaly a Yellow Rock was always done with the corner, The Green Rock
with your oppsisite, Red (for right) Rock for the mans Right hand lady.
The Purple Rock was reservered for your Partner and often was called to be
done with 'Alittle more Passion.
