I am interested in obtaining words to the songs that are used for Israeli
dancing (both new and old). Does anybody know a source?

Thanks

I understand there's a newsletter called "The Grapevine" from California
that gives the lyrics to a song in each (monthly) issue. Right now, I
don't have subscription info, but I can find out and post if you want. I
don't know of any other source.

There is another publication called NIRKODA which is published by the
Israeli Dance Institute in NYC. They also include the lyrics AND dance
syllabus to a dance in each issue.

The address in NYC is:
ISRAELI DANCE INSTITUTE, JCRC--12th FLOOR
711 Third Avenue
New York, NY 10017

An annual subscription is currently $12 a year (3 issues). Along with this
you will also receive the invaluable (at least I find it so) Clearinghouse
Calendar 6 times a year with information on Israeli dance events (as well as
some International workshops). I believe you also receive the most recent
copy of the "Where to Dance" listing for an additional $5 listing where
there is Israeli dancing all over the United States and around the world
(not comprehensive, though).

Good luck!

April in Rochester, NY (Sunday night Israeli Dancing at the JCC!!!)

Re: words for Israeli folk dances. The Vancouver International Folk
Dancers have put out books over the years that contain some of the
dances' words.

One of the most popular Hebrew songbooks is "1001 Songs" ("elef zemer
v'od zemer"), from Kinneret Publishing in Israel. It comes in 5
volumes, 200 songs per. It has the words (in Hebrew) to many popular
songs which have dances to them.

I have a copy of the songbook from "Washington's Tenth Annual Memorial
Day Israeli Folkdance Weekend" on disk - I scanned it in myself, I've
proofread the scan, but it probably still has errors.

I don't know how old the songbook is, you can judge by the contents.
The file contains 380 songs, mostly words to Israeli folk dances, in
English transiliteration (index attached below). On one hand, I didn't
compile this work, so it's not my right to share it, on the other
hand, it's a compilation of the "for educational use" variety, so I
think I should be able to share it in that spirit.

I sure would be interested to hear of other compilations of words
to Israeli folk dance tunes, especially more recent ones.

Thanks for the added info/correction. My previous was based on something a
something a friend told me. I've since seen an issue, and it's
correct that the lyrics are an occassional thing. L'hit ra'ot.
