Anyone?

The new mare keeps getting down into the woods and she
twangles twigs and junk in her tail. I ran out of Sheen and
was hoping for a home made version that would make my
daily tail combing a bit easier. Any ideas?

Ruth, if I can figure out the recipe I'll save a lot of money, but so far, no
luck. Cowboy Magic Detangler is terrific. I used to be a devotee of Show Sheen,
but that Detangler gel does one hell of a job.

Heh!

I wonder if I can just spray her tail with Pam? Maybe Teflon... ;-)

I had a mare with the thickest tail I had ever seen. It was always a
mess and hard to brush. I bathed and brushed her one day and sprayed
her mane and tail with a leaved in hair conditioner. Her tail was easy
to brush for quite a while after and was as soft as silk.

I use the Infusium Leave In Conditioner, which is ~$5 for a huge
bottle at Costco. It's not as slick as show sheen, but it does
the job for my horses. YMMV

I don't know.... do the sniff test. It's hard for me tell the difference and I
don't think I'm necessarily olifactorily (??) challenged.... show
sheen/armour-all = one in the same???

and Cowboy Magic is a) healthier than SS's silcon coating and b) quite
cost effective as a little goes a long way.

A little baby oil will help with tangles and burrs and twings. The only
problem is that dust will stick to it

A cheaper option is "No More Tangles" found in the baby shampoo section.

When we were really poor in college we used to use a fabric softener
solution for hair conditioner. It made our hair shine bigtime. It'd
probably work in an emergency. Now I use Pantene detangler.

I've used pam to get out bad snarls but it can also get dirty
easily. I typically used pam to keep snow balls from forming on
my horse's legs in the winter.

Regular hair conditionar diluted with water will make a detangler
but horses do have sensative skin so you probably would want to
do a spot check.. I've never used that on horses before. I use
that for my own hair. About 1 part to 4 - 7 parts water. You
can also used cheap, WATER BASED hand creme. Make sure it is
water based and a little liquid rather than vaseline. Its not as
quick but it does work.

I finally went out and bought the real stuff. I only use it on
the horse's tails (they don't have manes since I roach them
after the first frost). I need to be able to run a comb *quickly*
thru their tails at 5am on the days we hunt. This weekend they'll
have slick tails which will make getting it all together and hitting
the road just a little bit easier.

For the fastest combing, I use a product very similar to Cowboy Magic
detangler. I purchase it at the beauty supply. It REALLY works like
MAGIC!!! So fast. It seems like Show Sheen must be dry to work well. If
you are interested, I will post the name and/or pertinent ingredients.
(Using the ingredient list is how I picked it out at the beauty supply) It
seems to last a long time too.

BTW - no mane to hold onto??? Eeeek!

It's for humans then, I guess? Gee, I'll have to check it out.

> BTW - no mane to hold onto??? Eeeek!

LOL - but it's SUCH a butch look for a horse, plus you're
flying so fast there's no time to hold on. = :-O

Two people came up to me last hunt and asked how we did
it, they like the look so much. The key is to have about an inch
of growth left. I buzz it to the skin and then keep it trimmed at
about 1 - 1 1/2 inches for the cold season. In late winter I let it
grow again so there's mane to swish bugs with come spring.

The Hunt People are going back to the stables, removing their pink
coats, and using home-made horse tail detanglers?

Next thing you'll be telling me the British aristocracy have switched
from Grey Poupon to Frenches.
