the arenas). I went with one of my instructors on his young stallion. Spice
was a perfect lady, and McCartney was a perfect gentleman. It was very nice
to see that both horses were very much on the aids, and didn't fuss when
separated. We more-or-less worked the horses independently in the field
(McCartney needed to blow off steam, and I was working on big canter, little
canter stuff), and neither one got strong or unruly. It was a lot of fun, I
need to do it more often.
Does Calvin ever ride with you? He ought to get out and have a little fun
too, ya know, when he's not so busy making himself famous:)

no not in many years...I bought him a FANCY reining gelding
once...he traded it for a down payment on a tractor I think <G>

I don't mind grays, naturally, owning one... I do know if my daughter had a
gray there would be lots of color... as it is her chestnut has a neon
limegreen halter, shipping halter, shipping boots, saddlepad.... some bright
purple pads, as well.
I tend to do the scotch plaid thing so far on my gray, and don't see a lot
of neon on the horizon <g>. But I do like color, too.

In the 15 years before I bought my first MM horse I owned one gray, a
dappled Walker. Now I don't have any that are NOT gray. I guess
that's what happens when you're in a breed that is predominantly gray!
:-)
We've bred 10 MMs and the breakdown is one palomino, one bay, one
chestnut, one black, and six grays.
Fortunately, the MM horse does not appear to have the prevalence of
melanomas that are found in some other breed's gray members. On our
six horses we might have one melanoma (a tiny spot, just behind the
shoulder on the on side of our nine year old gelding). I'll have it
checked this fall.

looking riders too. Once again, your place is absolutely beautiful.
Our pastures--here in the rain forest of the BC south coast--are all
burned out and brown due to a couple months of draught. And the flies
are just dreadful. When I go to bring the horses in--even with tons
of fly wipe--they are just covered with flies and are beside
themselves wanting to go into the covered arena. But the monsoons
will arrive soon I'm sure.

Okay, I've been shamed into ending the procrastination.
I've put up the snapshots from the July 4th weekend
expedition to Kingston and Lancing TN to visit with
the Kambics and the Howards and to pick up Nita (aka
victim #2), the foundation QH mare that Tamara started
under saddle.

She's been doing great on trail rides, including a somewhat
challenging one last weekend where our host got lost within
a mile of his own home (just a little detour because of a
downed tree -- now where the heck are we and how did we get
here). As a result we spent about an hour bushwhacking
through spiders, briars, bad footing, and backtracking out of
dead ends without Nita getting excited or uncooperative. We
aren't yet quite on the same page since she surprised me (and
possibly herself) by stepping on my foot during one of the
many dismounted phases following low clearance game trails.
It led to lots of bruising (now gone) and swelling (mostly gone)
following the initial hurling of expletives into the forest,
but nothing vital was broken or torn (oh thank you, boots).
She did act a little fruity when we hauled to Morven Park to
work with an instructor we see a few times a year, but it was her
first exposure to a PA system. Sunday, on a solo ride on our
property, she decided to spook at the world. Preconceived objectives
were discarded as she learned that spooking neither gets a mare out
of work nor away from the spooky things -- poor, poor thing. ;-)

Thanks, I'll pass on the compliments. Like the "cobbler's shoes" the
photographer's curse is that his own image (and, in this case, that of
his horse under saddle) is oft neglected. A quick skim of ~5k images on
this pc yields but a handful and the film archive would likely add but a
paltry few. ;-/

What fun, Ben. My husband and I had the chance to visit the Kambics a few
weeks ago and your pictures reminded me how pretty their place is and how
pleasant they are to spend time with.
