But, he remains subfertile in spite of all our efforts. Legend is also
is such a laid-back horse that the stallion "always on alert" brain
state is stressful for him. I think he will be more content as a
gelding. So I have two more foals by him due next year, and plan to
continue his influence in my herd through careful breeding of some of
those offspring, but Legend will sire no more foals. :-( I will
always view him as a keystone of my breeding program. :-)
Bittersweet.

Yes, it is.
But it sounds like you've made the hard decision for all the right
reasons.
That reflects very well on you and your approach to breeding.
Congrats and <hugs>.

Give him extra scritchies from me.
I think you are being a very responsible owner and breeder, and I hope
he'll leave a lasting legacy.

Do you have plans for him?

He is a beautiful stallion and will make a beautiful gelding : ). He gave
you some really nice babies who will carry the line. I know this must be
terribly hard but you are doing the right thing for the right reasons. May
it be quick, painless and easily recovered from for him and may he go on
with you to do more great things.
I'm working on a sale video now. Selling him is going to be harder on
me than gelding him. He's incredibly easy to love so I am hopeful
that I will be able to find a good match for him. :-) He's been
well started under saddle, is a perfect gentleman, has a great mind
and a fantastic work ethic, and has the athleticism to do well in
almost any sport discipline. He LOVES to jump though he is still very
green over fences. With 2 1/2 years of work under saddle (with gaps
for winter weather and for breeding season), he hacks alone or in
company, can do leg yield, shoulder-in, rein-back, trot lengthenings,
counter canter, etc. As a stallion, he has been used as a lesson
horse for the intercollegiate team who all enjoy riding him. He has
also been a companion to young horses on their first trail rides.
Once he is gelded, he'll be a great mount for a talented kid or for a
small adult who wants a solid minded athlete. He's a good boy.
Dawn JL
No. In order to support the breeding farm, I will sell him to an
approved home.
--Dawn
If he is under 14.2 HH and with his 1/2 dressage training he might go as
an FEO pony prospect, yes?
sharon
He is being gelded at a veterinary surgical hospital by a board
certified veterinary surgeon with a second board certified surgeon on-
hand. He'll spend 24 hours post-op at the hospital before coming home.
Appropriate pain management/anti-inflammatory meds and antibiotics
will be utilized and he will have hydrotherapy and hand-walking to
minimize swelling. He'll be as well cared for through his recovery
as is possible. :-)
I have no doubt he will go on to do great things.
Dawn JL
He is 14.0H 1/2" so yes he could be an FEI pony prospect. That's one
of the possible target markets for him. ;-)

I'm sorry. I was afraid of that. It's terribly hard selling a heart
horse. But I'm sure you'll find a great match, and he'll go on to do
wonderful things. Horses let go of us far more easily than we let go
of them.

Dawn asked me some weeks ago about the pony jumper
market. I had a hunch about Legend and asked if she had
any video so I could look at him as a pony hunter prospect
as well. She had a few minutes of raw, unedited stuff where
he was somewhat tired and shared it with me. Legend did
not disappoint - he is a lovely mover with a great canter and
the step to do the strides. He's green as grass over the jumps
but has the right instincts with his shoulder and the start of
a good bascule. Even though he is pea green, he locks on
to the jumps. No rush, no "making a bid", no hawking or
stalking the jump - just a steady canter to the jumps with
a bright ear and look. He's a prospect for that.
His mind, lovely movement, great natural balance and very
good start make him a good prospect for *any* ring or discipline.
Plus he's pretty and even has a subtle touch of chrome. Who
could ask for more? :-) He'll be super fun to bring along and
has the sheer raw ability to go very far.
I am happy Dawn has some foals to perpetuate his genetics
in her breeding program - but perhaps Legend's destiny was
not to be a sire of legends, but maybe to be a legend of his
own and to be an ambassador for the Arabian breed. He
surely has the right stuff to do that.
He's a terrific horse.
He sounds wonderful and I know you will find a wonderful, hopefully
forever home for him. If you get any updates on him, after he's sold,
do please let us know.
I wish you and Legend the best for a quick, easy surgery...fast
recovery! And on to a wonderful new chapter in his life. Best, JJ
(Comet sends her best too!)
If Robin ever wants to return to Arabs, she should look at Dawn's
stuff. :-)

He is such a sweet horse. I am certain that he will be a very
contented boy once he heals.

I will. I certainly hope to be able to keep track of him. I am
offering him for sale P.T. so that I can be very selective about
matching him to a very lucky new owner. ;-)

Thanks. I left him at the surgical facility this afternoon. He is
such a good boy that he unloaded quietly and was contentedly munching
hay within seconds of being put in the stall. His surgery is
scheduled for tomorrow morning. I'm looking forward to picking him up
on Wednesday. He will get *LOTS* of scritches.

Good to hear he is doing well. :)

Thanks, Nancy. :-)
We brought Legend home on Wednesday afternoon to the Equestry where he
is boarded. The vet techs at the surgical clinic all raved about what
a sweet horse Legend is. They told me that they had been able to take
care of his catheter and give him his medications without even needing
to halter him. They couldn't stop raving about how gentle and well
mannered he is. They said they wished all their patients were so
good. As is typical of people who have spent time with Legend, they
smiled as they talked about him. He always charms people. He has
tons of charisma.
The Equestry is about 12 minutes from my house, so Thom and I went
there twice today to check on Legend. I rewrapped his tail (to keep
the tail hairs from irritating the surgical site, cold hosed his
"tender area", and hand walked him. He is on Equioxx to reduce
inflammation and discomfort and SMZ's to prevent infection. He was
obviously a bit uncomfortable, but the swelling and discharge are
minimal, and he really seemed to enjoy the walks (and the treats).
He's such a good boy.
I can already notice the effect of the decrease in his testosterone
level; he is even *more* mentally at ease than is typical for him. He
has lost some of the hyper-awareness that is characteristic of
stallions. I am certain that he will be so much happier as a
gelding. This was totally the right thing for him. :-)

well - wait for the full cut, cos here I had him going backwards as much as
forwards (G) - very prettily but it was a bit more like Strictly come
dancing than riding - giggle

No. But I do accept even trades in chocolate. ;-)

I thought you might have meant something more like that. ;-)
Legend is a good size for a cutting horse.. Lots of QH folks like
him in spite of his being an Arabian. :-0

I know. :-( I could burn you a dvd so you aren't left out. Snail

Yikes. I compressed the file for on-line viewing, but it is still
kinda big. I hate how herky jerky youtube videos are so I use vimeo
to get a higher quality playback. I appreciate hearing that download
time can be excessive on some systems (not just for folks still stuck
on dial-up).

I don't care what breed is your preference, a good horse is a good
horse.
I'm not comfortable on a horse that's so small, because I think I look
so huge <g>
Hunter
I *completely* agree. :-)

FWIW, Tawny is 15.3H ;-)
Legend's son, Flame, appears to be a taller horse than Legend. (All
his foals so far appear likely to mature taller than their fine
daddy.) I really hope Flame can carry on the sire line for Legend. I
have also the retained the fillies, Wish and Buttercup for my breeding
program.

Thanks! I emailed.
