Early Sunday morning, a fire started in the living room of the Scripps-Miramar Ranch
home. Ellen Scripps Davis and her husband Con perished. The cause of death remains
undetermined, however, it is presumed it was either carbon-monoxide poisoning
or smoke inhalation. Both were elderly.
Kevin Michaels, barn manager, managed to pull "Brownie" (Ellen) from the home, however,
CPR failed and she was DOA at the hospital. Brownie is best known for beginning the breeding
of spotted Saddlebreds. Scripps-Miramar is under the direction of her daughter, Michelle, who
is currently in Nagano for the Olympics. As of yesterday afternoon, she is honoring her
commitment to stay in Nagano to complete her duties there which include driving and riding
spotted Saddlebreds in the closing ceremonies.
Scripps Miramar Ranch is home to WGC Memories Citation (5 & 3 gaited), WGC Skywatch (5-gaited),
WGC Buck Rogers (Fine Harness), Chubasco (#1 futurity sire), WGC The Fire Fox (Country Pleasure),
and numerous other champion Saddlebred horses, both spotted and solid.
And condolences to their other daughter Vicky Green, an endurance rider.

p.s. - Michelle will not be returning from Nagano, she will honor her family's commitment
to the Olympics (as her mom & dad would have wanted), however, Vicky is at the ranch in
San Diego. As an aside, it has been determined that they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
While it is not pleasant, there was probably no pain during their passing. They did not burn (as
that is one of the rumors flying around the country). kd
