The Heckamans were involved in an accident. Steve's wife and daughter were
killed, and he is in the hospital on life support. Their rig was involved
in a head on collision with an oncoming tractor trailer.
We are all shocked and saddened by the news, I will try to relay more,
hopefully positive news as soon as we hear anything.
Steve is a six time world champion Quarter horse trainer and exibitor,
he is an outstanding individual with many accomplishments. Our condolences
go out to the Heckaman family and our prayers are with you.

I have some additional information. Since this is not from a
direct source, I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies.
Last weekend Steve, his wife Mary Carole, their baby, Mary Carole's
mother, and a 19-year-old assistant were at a futurity in Virginia.
They were in a truck accident which occurred on their way home in
Cumby, Texas at 3 am on Monday morning. Cumby is about an hour's
drive northeast of Dallas.
I have since heard more than one version on the internet about how the
accident occurred. I don't know which version is correct but the
following is what I was told by other QH owners who live in the
general vincinity of the accident:
The assistant was driving the truck which was pulling a gooseneck
trailer fully loaded with horses. All passengers were asleep at the
time of the accident. The driver fell asleep at the wheel and ran
into a parked semi-trailer. Everyone was thrown or pushed from the
vehicle.
Mary Carole was pushed out the front of the truck and killed. The
baby survived, was treated at Children's Hospital and will be released
soon to Mary Carole's brother. Mary Carole's mother was released from
intensive care on Tuesday, is still hospitalized and is expected to
recover. The driver survived with no significant injuries.
Steve is being kept in an induced coma, had collapsed lungs, is on a
respirator and had surgery to repair his severely injured arm. He had
or will have leg surgery. An artery(or vein?) will be removed from
his leg to help save his arm. He is in critical condition with many
injuries and is still in a touch and go situation as of Tuesday.
I'm told that the horses were not injured and are fine.
People who don't know Steve Heckaman may have seen his instructional
video on western pleasure. He has been featured in numerous articles
in many national horse magazines and breed journals. He's one of the
most widely recognized competitors in western pleasure in several
associations including AQHA.
His wife Mary Carole Heckaman was also an accomplished equestrian who
had won the AQHA World Championship in Amateur Western Pleasure among
other winnings. She has been in several Sargeant's Western Wear
Catalogs.
Several benefit events and funds are being planned to help the
Heckaman/Green families in their time of need.
