We went to get Lite and Belles for a ride in the park and Moonlight's
eye was swollen shut. I tried to flip open the lids and have a look and
she was so inflamed I could only see a slit of the eyeball. Yikes.

Anyhow, the vet thinks she was stung in the eye. We had to sedate her,
then block the eyelids, and even then the vet had a hard time staining
and medicating the eye because the inflammation was so intense. We gave
her antihistamines, steroids, antibiotic--topical and injected--plus
flushed the eye out as best we could. I have bute paste and antibiotics
and orders to give her 12 benadryl by mouth if the swelling isn't coming
down. She can go out with a fly mask.

Poor thing. She's miserable and it is very painful.

Stung in the eye?!!??

Poor girl. Best sympathies.

I get nervous just noticing how active the bees and wasps are already
this summer. Also makes me wonder if we're not in for another hard
winter here.

OMG! How awful!

Good vibes for Moonlight and all her caretakers.

She looks like she was in a bar fight, honest to goodness--sedated with
lip hanging, drool, blood on her neck from her shots, huge eye swollen
shut and oozing . . . we could not find where the stinger actually got
her, although there was a sting area below the eye (not part of the
swollen part, separate spot). The inflammation is such that it is
impossible to really get a good exam of the structures of the eye past
the staining and searching for a scratch or puncture on the eyeball. The
lids are over a centimeter thick each, probably a good half inch each.
You can barely find the eyeball in all that red and yellow mess. I've
never seen an eye quite like that before.

Thanks. It will be so fun to goop it with meds--even with sedation, she
had me off my feet several times in the effort to block the lids enough
for examination. And Moonlight is one of the best horses for the vet, ever.

Eyelids? I don't think the eyeball itself as that would have shown on
the stain, right? And since there was a sting right below the tear duct
area which was on a bony area and unhappy but not enormous, for all we
know she got into a nest of something and got nailed by more than one.

> Poor girl. Best sympathies.

She really looks pitiful and feels worse, I am sure. She's normally very
stoic, but she was picking me right up off my feet during the exam.
Never moved her feet, though, just up with the head and neck. No running
us over, threatening, or anything ugly--and with pain like a sting in
the eye area, who on earth could blame her for being evasive? And also,
she can't see at all out of that eye, it's entirely sealed by the
swelling, so the vet touching her always would come out of nowhere.

With the cool wet weather we have a bumper crop of every kind of bug. ICK.

Moonlight's stung eye has returned to basically normal, just a tinge
puffy. So, all is well!
