Whooops!

Moonlight and headed down to the Bucks Co HP for a nice trail ride. Pull
in, unload the girls, groom, go to tack up, and realize that I have lost
Moonlight's girth somewhere between the saddle rack and the dressing
room of the trailer.
We put Carl on the Western saddle with Belles, and I took Moonlight
bareback, very glad she has gotten a little pudgy this spring, LOL. We
ended up riding about an hour and a half, including up and down some
steep hills, through streams, over logs and through gullies, ducking low
branches, trotting and walking mixed. Moonlight was as fresh as new
paint the entire ride, but behaving nicely and not disturbed by the lack
of a saddle; Carl and Belles did swimmingly well, although he kinda
finds her intimidating now that he is used to Spot Check. Kind of like
going from a moped to a Harley.
Anyone else have a nice day?

was a great day weatherwise here too, though no chance to ride, but I'm glad
you guys did.

Thanks. His back thing of the past month and a few weeks was started by
a Hay Throwing Incident.
The fall rattled his confidence big time, and that is just coming back
really. More miles will help!

Well, it's actually been a nice few days. On Saturday, the BO washed all the
windows and screens in the barn and asked everyone to vacuum their stalls. I
have to say Ms. Meeko's stall looks much larger with clean windows and no
cobwebs. She was actually a bit out of sorts when I rode her but managed to
keep her tension channeled into moving like she has rockets in her heels.
Yesterday I tried riding her in the saddle Fire's trainer left for me to
ride him in and was amazed at how uncomfortable one saddle could possibly
be. The thing looked okay on her but it kept shifting around, was like
sitting on a surf board, and seemed to magnify every single riding fault I
had. On a good note, it made her feel thinner :-) Oddly enough, I didn't
really notice how uncomfortable it is on Fire during the couple of times I
rode him. Today, she discovered the joys of the trampoline. I never expected
Ms. Wary Of Everything to be quite so interested in it. My sister had it up
next to the vaulting barrel on one side of the arena for V to practice
really launching herself on her vaulting mounts. I was adjusting the tack
and she looked over and sniffed the thing, tested the bounciness with her
nose and then proceeded to scratch her teeth, lips, tongue and gums on the
middle part. Riding actually went well too and I keep crossing my fingers
she'll continue to make good progress and not backslide. I'm taking her to
the Nashoba Valley Hunt Pace in a couple of weeks. My partner is going to be
the teen who is leasing and BO's horse and has never done a pace before.
This is a really good one to start with since's so relaxed. I was hoping to
get Fire's trainer to take him but she's away that weekend and by the look
on her face I don't think she would touch a pace event with a ten foot pole.
Bummer.
I rode Fire in a lesson on Sunday and spent the time before imaging all
sorts of horrible things that could happen. He was actually a dream to ride
and it was nice to ride an animal that is so responsive. Our groundwork left
much to be desired but there's learning curve to all of it and I'll get it
eventually. V spent the past two days riding the chestnut beastie and loving
every minute of it. It's been hard on him though because he has only been
ridden by one person for the past few years and is kinda set in her ways. My
sister needs to set up a time to have his trainer give her a lesson in how
he is used to being ridden. What's cute is that he and Meeko now touch noses
through the hole in the wall (long story involving one naughty pony) as if
they're comparing notes.

Today I had an appointment after work but yesterday I got to ride. I
took down the jumps and put up the "circling exercise" which I thought
before was maybe Axl's favorite, but now I am certain of it. The way
it is set up is I put several poles, embellished with cones and
barrels along the center line of the arena. Then we trot or canter
over various poles turning this way and that making big circles,
little circles, and even serpentines. Axl loves this game and does not
seem to tire. In fact he got so into cantering that at one point he
seemed to want to "blow off steam" and was going a little faster than
usual - but not too fast. It felt like he was enjoying himself so I
let him go and we just went around the perimeter of the arena for a
while. This is good. He used to stop the minute I took back on the
reins as if cantering was a huge chore. Sometimes I like to do canter
\trot transitions before working on the trot. Because then I feel he
gets more animated rather than have a lazy trot that needs prodding.
If I can get him feeling energetic, then there is no battle.
I was happy he seemed to really be enjoying himself with the circles.

My Boo (5 yr old paint what ain't bay gelding) has been going well in
the Western saddle for a year. He used to balk big time, that's been
mainly worked through and now he's going up and down from walk to trot
to lope smoothly.
Reading all the above and smiling smugly at having lost a few pounds,
I decided to start riding him in my English saddle. I put a thin
blanket and a foam pad on him, tacked him up and off we went.
I'm woefully out of practice, a good part of the first four or five
rides was just me getting myself used to riding in so much _less_.
Boo was worried, he wasn't sure and it was funny that he started
tracking crooked at the trot and I had to straighten him out.
Then today I finally got him moving out well at the trot but he was
too scared to lope in the big exercise area. I had to take him back to
the 60' round pen and got a smooth transition up and out of the lope
in each direction.
What his behavior tells me is that someone was scared of loping or
galloping on him and reined him back every time that he tried that
gait, it's taken a year of gentle reassurance that it really is OK to
lope.
He was great today, though. His trot was straight and soft, I'm
starting to be able to feel which shoulder is moving forward without
looking again, and the weather has been beautiful.

80 degrees towards 90 degrees F over the next few days, so perhaps
this weekend will still be nice enough to ride a bit.
Glad you and Carl had a nice ride. I missed the post where he was
injured and fell. Sorry that happened to him. Glad he's better and
wishing him the best regaining his confidence.

He got crunched back in December when we were horse shopping--actually,
it was two falls in a 10 day period. I told him to wait in the drive
with Belles while I got organized with Moonlight or Dancer, one or the
other, and he had a Novice Over Confident moment and took Belles out
into the field to practice trotting while I tacked. She decided to
canter back towards the barn, he panicked and stiffened all up and when
she zigged at the corner he zagged. Then 10 days later when we were
looking at a "beginner safe" horse the lady wanted to take him on a
short hack in the woods to get to know the horse where the footing was
better. I had ridden it first and told him he would be fine to walk and
trot the horse, but not to canter it. I said this in front of said
seller. Carl felt nervous of getting on the horse but didn't mention
this to me (otherwise I would have given him either a mini-walk trot
lesson in the area where I had been riding or we would have packed it up
and gone to the next place). Anyhow, they get into the woods and she
took off cantering even though Carl was asking her to slow down; they
were down to a trot but Carl wanted to walk when a branch snagged and
slapped his horse in the butt and it bucked and off he came.
That was the same lady who told me that Carl was too old to learn to
ride, seeing how he is in his late 40s, and I am going to get him killed
and if I really cared about him I would not allow him to ride and I sure
wouldn't get him a horse. <rolls eyes>
Anyhow, his confidence had a major set back. He's doing better and
better with riding Spot, feels good to walk and trot him even when I am
not there, and has cantered in a lesson once now with my coach. He was
very, very nervous on Belles the last time we went to the Park, much
better this time. He'll come around. :-)

The thing I notice with my greenie is that I need to "Bring It." Cuz
if I don't have the intent and the brain power to think about what
needs to be done - i.e. ride to the corner (which I did not do in my
video) then it's not gonna get done! But I am amazed at the minute I
concentrate on going into the corner - it happens. My horse is such a
clean slate. Unless I tell him, he doesn't know. There is so much we
take for granted when riding a trained horse!

Well my washing machine just ate a glove. I swear I put two of them in
there, but only one came out!!

Glad Belles is being such a good girl to help with the confidence. Give
her an extra scritch for me.

Well, I had a pretty good "last lesson before the first show". This was
the first time I rode the test all the way thru since last Sept. The
quality of the gaits and transitions felt very good. I can't wait to
ride the lengthened canter this year - we have an EXPLOSIVE and lovely
lengthening down the longside with a really smooth and lovely collection
right at the letter! Calibra and I LURVE this movement.
On the other hand, my geometry was WAY OFF. I overshot center line every
time, and my 10 meter trot circles were ovals. Kelly chewed me up and
spit me out about giving up points for lack of accuracy, so I hope I do
better this weekend. Calibra's on the trailer now, and I'm leaving
tomorrow morning for Lamplight in Wayne IL.

Glad you got to ride anyway! I hop on Comet bareback now and then...but she
requires some, erm, padding. Her back has always been a bit uncomfortable.
But I have a fleece bareback pad and it's pretty comfy.
