Our oldest boarder Disco (37 this year) seems to be going deaf.
Fortunately he's a calm old guy but it probably means that he will have
to stay in his private paddock and not go out with the herd this summer.

We put Disco in a private paddock for the winter because he can't chew
hay and so needs his mash three times a day. He also needs access to a
stall in the cold weather.

Before we pulled him out of the herd this fall he was starting to get
bitten up a bit by a few of the younger mares. Before this year he has
always managed to get along quite well in the herd: I suspect that his
deafness was causing him to miss some cues.

He'll have some grass to gnaw on in the pony pen (he can't really chew
it) and he'll have Fred our retired stallion next door for company.

I think a deaf horse will be much easier to manage than a blind one
(something I've done several times).

Disco was put down day before yesterday and buried out in the jump
field. He was 36, deaf, and beginning to have a bit of trouble getting
around. Last year he developed stringhalt when the weather got cold.
Blanketing largely cleared it up but it looked as if it was going to be
worse this winter.

Fred misses him.

So sorry for your loss, it is never easy! I lost two this year, myself. That's the hardest part of owning animals!

What a great long life he had, though!

In over thirty years of boarding (including many retirees), training,
lessons, and breeding I've been through it many times. You never really
get used to it, though.
