There was a magazine article on the movie and people where picketing
outside the movie houses due to the fact that some of the horses in the
movie had been shot to make scenes look more realistic. One scene was when
the horse had to race down a steep incline and fall at the bottom,
apparently he was shot by a bloke with a rifle. Mind you I seem to think
that the magazine said it was a mare.
The movie was filmed in Australia and possibly it was the sequel to the
movie that they wanted to prevent people watching because of the animal
abuse 'behind the scenes'.
I must truly admit that I am going on memory here but I know for a fact
that a horse or two was shot for a five minute film take.
Mind you I suppose some people see a horse no different to a buck but I
couldn't shoot one of those either, I saw Bambi... :-)

Truly I would be *very* surprised, indeed I would be astounded if this
were true. The Australian RSPCA (Royal Society for the Protection of
Animals) is very active, and on any set where a lot of animals were
being used would certainly have a representative and there is no way
they would have agreed to horses being shot just for a film. And,
many ot of the riders in the movie were real high country horsepeople,
who have a real respect and affection for horses.

the horse was the Dunny that was in the first movie. I don't believe any
horses were hurt (or intentionally shot). The scene with the horse
running down the steep incline was faked. It was a hill, not as much as
the movie shows, with the trees planted at an angle.
In the second movie Return from Snowy River, the relived the same scene,
but while filming, the horse really did trip and died on the way down
(with the actor on board). They rewrote the script showing someone shot
the horse.
No horses were intentially hurt, it was an accident, that turned in the
movie makers fortune. I can't watch the movie because of this, but I
don't blame the filmakers.
The movie you have in mind was the sequel "Return to Snowy
River," because the scene you described was when Tom Burlinson (also
in the Phar Lap movie) and his horse were racing down a steep mountain
side. In the movie plot, his horse was shot by the horse thieves at
the bottom of the mountain. It was quite a spectacular scene, but I
cringe to think that any animals were intentionally injured. Aren't
there laws against that? Maybe not in Australia. I had never heard
these rumors, but since I thought it was a pretty good flick, now I'm
shocked to hear that such abuses may have taken place.

well since it was a disney produced film (if i remember correctly) i HIGHLY
doubt your information is correct. disney would NOT put its reputation ont
he line for this.

Not sure why you would ever think Disney was an advocate for humane
treatment of animals....
Karen
o.b. horsey-couldn't go out riding today as my son was sick, but
horses all got turnout in the back field, which is showing a slight
tint of green. They tore around around bucking and kicking and
had a great time. There's a touch of spring in the air....
I'm sure that if you look really closely you see the horse
is this scene breathe. (This is assuming that the US and OZ
versions of the film were the same). As far as I know the
only things injured in the "Man from Snowy River" films were
one stunt rider who broke ribs and a leg (in the jump down
the mountain scene in MFSR1) and one of the horses was
injured when it ran through a fence.
Actually the horses name is Denny. And the hill was real.!!! In an
interview/article on the making of the movie ( It was in a horse magazine
ie..Horses & Rider/Western Horseman/Horseman(Ithink it was this one)) Tom
Burlinson stated that the first time going down the hill was scary. It
took seven takes to get the scene. It was a real hill.
Also Tom said that he had never ridden a horse and learned to ride for the
movie. He has wonderful hands. I love watching how soft he is on a horse.
A true natural.
As for Denny getting killed in the second movie, I had not heard that. But
I will ask around ans see if any body else has.
