It's always 'easy' when it's an Olympic year...
Most of the big names are already qualified, so don't go...
Entries are down this year, they may even cancel...
Most of the hotels are already fully booked....
It's a little hard to know what's really going on!
As far as Olympic team selection goes in Canada, We have already got 6 riders
short listed and 9 long-listed. Their mandatory selection trials consist of
the following:
1. Attend at least two of the following *one-day* trials:
Trojan Horse, Ram Tap, Wild Horse
North Georgia, Fair Hill, Monepleir, Lexington
2. Attend *one* of the following CCI's:
Lexington (Rolex :-)
Checkmate (C-C-C-Canada)
- as well as the team training camp which is at Morven Park in Virginia.
Anyway, from what I can tell, most long/short listed riders will opt to go to
the Checkmate CCI - (easier?,closer?,cheaper?).
So, I just wondered if anyone (Sandi :?) knew what the plans for the American
Team are as far as Rolex goes.
Thanks,
Sue Grocott
I had a chance to talk a little bit with Stephen Bradley, one of the
US hopefuls for eventing. The selection criteria in the US are similar,
basically you have to do one 3-star CCI (in North America that's either
Checkmate or Rolex this spring), to qualify. Karen Lende and David O'Connor
as well as some others (perhaps Abigail Lufkin ?, does anyone know)
have opted to go to England and train/prepare there. For them
it would be sufficient to complete Badminton with a clear XC round
(time penalties don't count in this case) in order to get as many olympic
selection points as winning ROLEX or Checkmate. However, it is not trivial
to get around Badminton. Alternatively, there are several other 3-star CCI's
in Europe this spring, notably Luhmuehlen (GER) and Saumur (FRA),
which are equivalent.
As far as I can tell, you get points for your placings at the CCI's
and that determines if you go to England with the USET. they plan to be there
(at Lars Sederholm's place in Waterstock near Oxford) for about 6 weeks
before the Olympics. Up to 8 horses and riders will go as part of the
team to England, and then further selection will be required.
Stephen can only compete 2 advanced horses at ROLEX 3-day, according to the
rules. So he is forced to compete his third olympic prospect at Checkmate.
It was my impression that the first CCI*** you enter will count more heavily
for you in the selection process. That's all I know.
