About two weeks ago at drill team, i thought i saw macho take a few
"off" steps when circling to the left--the arena footing is VERY deep
at 4-H and at the time, I chalked it up to the deepness of the
footing....on the rail he was fine. out in the grass, was fine. at
home, has been fine.
Went out yesterday, and we worked on some showmanship stuff.(i.e. in
hand stuff). Katie was jogging him (at this point, our ring is rock
Hard, BO's dad did not drag it...). and i asked her to jog him in
said left hand 20 m circle (again, in hand). Yep, a definate, slight
head bob. Took him out on the grass...still there, to a lesser
extent. not as much to the right.
No heat, no swelling. he IS barefoot and IS stomping at flies no
matter how much fly spray we put on him. I have a call into the vet
(I did leave a message NOT a super duper emergency, but would like him
seen as quickly as possible early in the week...). My thoughts are
ranging from as simple as being foot sore, to as bad as ringbone, or
sidebone. any thoughts?

He could have an abscess brewing. If you have gotten anywhere near the rain
and mud that we have it's a real possibility. Or something as simple as
thrush, which was Bentley's problem when he was lame before the June show
(also exacerbated by mud.) Hope for the easy stuff! I hope the vet
confirms it is something really easy.
i would love it to be something so simple...but no soft spots ANYWHERE
indicating abscess and no signs of thrush.....we've had a ton of
rain, but his field drains remarkabley well....

I'm sorry I don't know how old Macho is. Could it be arthritis? If so
Glucosamine Chonodrate (can't spell the second word) will help. It's
doing wonders for my arthritic cat and my becoming-arthritic me.

Sometimes unless you use the hoof testers, you can't tell... it may not
appear soft on the outside, but layers in...
and if not, I will hope for just a stone bruise!
me too! we will see what the vet has to say...
he's ten--before i start worrying to much, i keep reminding myself
"it's a long way from his heart"....and i'll see when the vet can get
out.
A very nice show venue near Calgary put too much footing down at one
point. They lost so many show entries that they stopped holding their
show series. Why they didn't remove some of the material I will never
know... the place was later sold as far as I know. I wasn't in that loop.
When they were adding material to the ring at my barn, I mentioned this
as a caution not to put in too much. I would have had to leave had that
happened.
any thoughts?
I hope you find out soon and he is back to work.
Good luck.

One of our school horses came up lame, had some heat in his hoof, they
soaked it, had
the farriers look at it, he never got better or worse, so Trainer called the
vet and he has
a very bad bruise and he wears shoes, its already been a month, so now his
hoof is packed
with ithymol and gets a bute a day and walks alot better, but still not in
work. SO maybe it may be a bruise since he doesn't wear shoes. Just my
thought

i'm thinking it's a potential cause...i just am hoping it's all
"fixable"...he's such a wonder horse.
John-
i have a feeling we might be doing xrays....if nothing is obvious to
the vet from the outside. would an x-ray for a bone cyst require me
asking for something different???? and if it IS a bone cyst..what
next? (i've never had experience with one)
thank you

Here's hoping it's a simple issue with an easy fix. Please let us
know what the vet finds.
best wishes,

When Jade went lame (due to an old fragment of sesmoid bone in her
pastern ligament that became calcified) it was worse in the deep
footing at the trainers. My arena had not footing and was very hard
but she seemed to go much better on that. My trainer said if she is
worse in soft footing then it is ligament. If worse on the hard
footing then it is bone - or something like that.
Are you sure it is in the hoof? When the vet comes he/she may do
flexion tests to make sure unless it is obvious with the hoof testers.
I hope that it is not a big deal. Even with Jade's lameness, she was
fine for the flat if she got legend shots. She could do trail riding
(walking) just fine without any treatment.
I am hoping it is a simple abscess and the hoof testers can pin point
it. Pixie has recovered 100% from hers 2 weeks ago.
