I am considering buying a used Circle Y Saddle. It is supposedly a
1992 to 1994 model 2993-1607. It is a show saddle (though not too much
silver) and seems in fairly good condition. I think it might be an
equitation saddle, not sure. I called Circle Y and asked them for the
price when new. They didn't give me that, but said that to make now
would be $2100. It looks to be in pretty good condition, but I don't
know what it would be worth, and what to offer.

It is owned by someone at our barn, and she said to make an offer. She
has other show saddle, this is a spare and she knows that I was looking.

Does anyone know anything about this model, or what a reasonable offer
would be?

Well, the rule of thumb in horsetrading (or saddle trading for that
matter) is to always start WAAAAY below what you'd actually pay. For
instance, start at $500. Once you mention a number, you'll be
surprised at how fast the other person changes from "an offer" to a
specific dollar amount.

Anyway, I'd say start at $500, and work your way up, but don't pay more
than $900, unless it's really special. And BE SURE it fits you AND
your horse before even mentioning a dollar amount. Don't be scared to
haggle. I was, until my mother told me "Don't give me that 'can't talk
money' crap. Just pretend the other person is your ex husband and
you'll get whatever you want!" It worked... <grin!>

Good luck, and if you don't want it, let me know. I'm in the market
for a 2nd hand saddle of this type!

I'm not familiar with western saddles, but you might want to check ebay to see
what a similar Circle Y is selling for. You *should* be able to pull up what
you want if you seach for "Circle Y" and "silver" (or just circle Y, I guess)
and click the "search titles and descriptions" button.

I purchased a Circle Y saddle on Ebay last spring and paid about $675
dollars. It has some silver and has the basket weave pattern. It was in
great condition..

As a guide these are some of the prices that show saddles made/didn't make
recently on eBay:-

Manuf. Year Size Price reached Sold(S)/RNM (Reserve
Not Met)

ONO 1966 15 $327.00 S
J.C. Higgins 1920 14 $229.50 S
Champion *95/98 15.5 $720.00 S
Shipley 1920 15 $153.00 RNM
Circle Y *95/98 16 $465.00 S
Buffalo *98/00 15.5 $799.00 S
Silver Royal *95/98 16 $900.00 S
A'mrcn Sdlry *98/00 15.5 $890.00 RNM
Saddle King *1980's 15 $152.00 RNM
Boyt (Pony) 1949 12 $2,605.00 RNM
Schoelkopf *1960's 15.5 $410.00 Sold
*=guesstimated year of manufacture
Caution: no guarantee is given or implied as to the accuracy of the above
information

From the above I would estimate the saddle should be worth around $375/550.
But then that's only my idea regarding price. The important thing is -
What's its VALUE to you? - It's something you can readily see and which you
know something about and which you and your horse can try out -BEFORE
shelling out the greenbacks.

I have watched ebay saddles for a while trying to determine a price on
my Billy Royal made by Circle Y - and the prices are really screwy
sometimes! Really junky saddles have brought relatively big dollars -
and better saddles not getting anything - it is a very strange venue to
set prices...

my rule of thumb has always been that instead of buying mediocre new
stuff, there is a better quality used item at the same price
somewhere...saddles are now commonly "stamped" with large plates to get
a pattern - not handtooled - and acyrlic sheepskin is used on new
saddles costing $1500!

And if anyone *IS* looking for a top quality used Billy Royal!!!
Sterling silver lace on skirts, cantle, swells; conchos; cornerplates.
Medium chestnut color. Handtooled acorn/oak leaf pattern. Is 15 inch
seat - but was ridden comfortably by people from 5"4' to 6"6' - it is
the way the fenders are set that dictate if you are going to be happy in
the seat size! - quarter horse tree; real sheepskin and I *think* I
have the billets and back girth..

Price is negotiable - and the start low/start high game goes both ways!
:) I will either dicker or set a firm price...pix available by
request...

Thanks for everyone's help. And you are correct that a saddle is worth
whatever the buyer is willing to pay. I have been watching similar
saddles on Ebay. Some bidders seem to get a deal and then others seem
to pay too much. Also checked used tack sites. This whole experience
has given me a better grasp of what is a "good" deal on a saddle.

I have found a Tex Tan Golden Pleasure saddle with full QH bars and 16"
seat brand new! It lists for 1,050 and usually sells for around $800
(at least around here) from what I have found. It is light oil and the
tree will be under warranty. It fits the horse and rider (minor
detail) and I got it for $550. I feel really good about it.

The only negative - have to break it in!

Thanks to all who helped!
