There was a flurry of emails to the equine-l mailing list today,
forwarded from someone who wormed some horses with Bimectin and other
horses with a different wormer. All the horses wormed with Bimectin
are dead except for one weanling which is very sick, all the other
horses are fine. So if you have Bimectin wormer from lot 5J019 (the 0
is either a number or the letter O, she says it is hard to tell) with
an expiration date of September 2007, you should probably not use it
until this is sorted out.

Here's a copy of the original email as sent to EL:

>We have had quite a tragedy at our ranch the last few days, and after talking to
>my attorney she gave me the go ahead to tell others about it. I wormed 5 of my
>horses with BIMECTIN wormer on WEDNESDAY, when I went out to give them breakfast
>on THURSDAY, they looked sick. My vet was contacted. Long story short, by
>FRIDAY they where down and could not get up, and by saturday and
>sunday they DIED.
>
>The other horses wormed the same day with a DIFFERENT wormer are FINE.
>These horses
>had the same feed, water, hay etc, the ONLY difference in the horses
>was the WORMER.
>My vet after seeing them told me he HAS seen this BEFORE. A MASSIVE overdose of
>wormer. Normally a batch of wormer made too strong at the factory.
>
>THIS IS ONLY A SUSPICION ON MY PART. I AM NOT ACCUSING THE COMPANY, I
>AM ONLY PUTTING OUT MY STORY TO LET PEOPLE MADE THEIR OWN DECISIONS.
>
>The necropsies will be performed on the horses and the wormers that I
>still have from the case with the same lot numbers will be going to
>independent labs for testing. We lost, 2 young stallions, 1 PREG mare
>(due in June) 1 yearling, and 1 weanling is still breathing as I type
>but we expect her to die. Kerry

I just looked up Bimectin on Country Supply where I buy most of my
supplements. They have a blurb stating that there is a possible safety
issue regarding Bimectin and they pulled it from their stock.

This must be more widespread than this one isolated case. Google news
didn't have anything listed however. Hope other wholesaler/retailers pull
it from their stock as well!

What hides behind the brand name? I haven't seen it here, but things
often cross the atlantic under different names, so I'd like to be
forewarned.

Excerpts from the US Food and Drug Administration web site
<http://www.fda.gov/cvm/FdaVetMarch2005.htm>:

March/April 2005, Volume XX, No. II, FDA Veterinarian Newsletter

CVM has published in the Federal Register notice of the approval
of these Abbreviated New Animal Drug Approvals (ANADA)

BIMECTIN (ivermectin) Paste 1.87% filed by Cross Vetpharm Group Ltd.
(ANADA 200-326). The ANADA provides for oral use of 1.87% ivermectin
paste in horses for the treatment and control of various species of
internal parasites or parasitic conditions. Cross Vetpharm Group’s
BIMECTIN Paste 1.87% is approved as a generic copy of Merial Limited’s
EQVALAN Paste, approved under NADA 134-314. Notice of approval was
published February 22, 2005.

Although Cross Vetpharm's Bimeda subsidiary indicates a www.bimectin.com
site is forthcoming, the link provides no information.

The Merial Eqvalan product label only cites ivermectin as the agent
<http://merialusa.naccvp.com/view.php?prodnum=1111012> so Bimectin appears
to be (at least intended to be) merely one of many ivermectin generics.
