The saddest part of this is, I bet lots of people will still ride with
Valliere, board with him, show with him (and the others,) the $$$$$ list
goes on.
In my opinion, if the show horse community continues to patronize these
people instead of refusing to do business with them, then they are more or
less just as guilty as the ones who have been charged with the actual
crimes.
I say, hit them in the bank account - that's the (only) type of punishment
that'll make an impression on them. It is also a method of punishment
that *we* can inflict and enforce, without having to rely on the courts.

Lots of people do still ride with him and defend him. Sometimes I think
the horse business is a bottomless pit of fools waiting to be parted
from their money.
The Chronicle had a list of addtional people that had been charged,
one of which was Cheska. I can't quite place the name but it sounds
very familiar. Show jumping maybe? Also any news on Barney Ward?
Sandy
Sounds like he must have given the prosecutors some good information!!

The first name wasn't Donald, Robert maybe (I've already tossed
the issue). Donald is the one I was thinking of though, show jumper.
I wonder if this person is a relative of his? Getting hard to tell the
killers without a scorecard. There was a woman named Brown involved
early on (Donna?) and I kept wondering if she was related to Buddy
Brown.

I was talking with folks at the barn about this last night and the
consensus was that Valliere only got 4 month probation, because he's
turning in Barney Ward....... (maybe truth, or maybe fiction)

It's the truth, he wore a wire while he and Barney arranged to
electrocute another horse that Barney owned. The police have it all on
tape...........is this admissable evidence? Paul was the go between for
a few "killings" so he went "lilly white" confessed and had his sentence
reduced to probation. At least he went clean and confessed all his
dealings (we have to take his word for that!), the others are
still thumping their chests and denying all involvement.
Has Mr. G. Lindemann spent a day in "real jail" yet? Just wondering.

Donald Cheska has a brother named Richard who is (was?) active in the
show-jumping world. I think there might be a 3rd brother too but I'm not
sure about that. Yes, they are from the midwest (Illinois I think).
Paul Valliere was always so easily identified at shows -- he was the one
screaming insults at the top of his lungs at his students both in the schooling
ring and the show ring.

..Was Buddy Brown's wife. At least when the horse StreetWise's leg
was broken (which started this whole thing). They were seperated.
She is the one who had her horse's leg broken to collect the insurance
(the horse was insured for trailering accidents, but not "regular"
mortality). The FBI got word ahead of time, and taped the whole thing.
She is Buddy Brown's wife.

When I was in Florida for a horse trials in February there was a piece in
the local paper saying that he had arrived at the prison there. Don't
remember the prison's name. The article made some sort of joke about
the average income of the county residents just taking a huge upward
leap with his arrival.

Thought I heard something about him having to report. A quote from
somebody at the prison saying he wouldn't be treated any differently.
That he would have to clean toilets, work in the kitchens, etc like
all the other prisoners. I'll have to see if I can find it......

I always get the Cheska's and the Leone's mixed up in this department.
I believe there are 3 brother in each set that ride (or used to); a
set of twins and another brother. (But which family had the twins, I
can never remember; or maybe they both did.....)

I understand that Robert Dover continued to work with George Lemoine; perhaps
he was just giving him the benefit of the doubt.

I'd be interested, too. I bought my first horse from that slimeball
Garvey. Oddly enough, he hated the horse and it was the best horse in the
world from my point of view! Guess you can tell a lot about a horse by
WHO doesn't like it... :) I left his barn about a year before he burned
it down. IF my horse had been in that fire, I would have personally
ripped the SOB limb from limb.
Can somebody jog my memory here? Is this the burning of Coach House
Stables or did Garvey's own-named place burn too?

I haven't seen anything, nor heard anything. My conclusion is that
somehow they've gotten a continuance or postponement * OR * John
and/or Danny have suddenly decided perhaps they should chat with the
authorities.
Will continue to keep my eyes open. I'll also query around the barn
see if anybody's heard anything.
Garvey went to California after the barn fire and was running a place
called Portuguese Bend, a hotshot hunter/jumper place, with his blond
wife. It probably IS the person you're thinking of. :)

I read in a recent magazine, not sure which one, maybe Equus, that
everyone else pled guilty, so there would be no more trials.

The lawyer's have been arguing over how to have the trial - together
or separately. And if separately, concurrently or not. Apparently
there are many out of town witnesses and one lawyer was trying to be
nice to them.
Basically, they have decided to have separate trials, Danny Jaynes
first, starting 4/22 and Garvey's to start after Danny's done. They
believe the trials will take 4-5 days each.
More as it becomes available.
